I need some help on Windows 2000 transfer. I am trying to transfer all my data from 2000 to XP. I would like to use my previously purchased software on the new system but it gives me an error of "invalid product key". I know that I have the correct product key so that cant be the issue. How do I transfer the product key of the software from the old PC onto the new one? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, ~phoenix

automatic deletion from \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads fo
by Guest Charlotte- 0 replies
It was my understanding that when Automatic Updater downloads files and puts them in this folder (\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads) that the files would automatically delete after 10 days. I just had some disk space issues and found that there were files in the folder going back as far as a year. I went ahead and deleted them, but is there some setting I need to get these to delete automatically? Thanks, Charlotte

by Guest Nime- 7 replies

Hi, my network map is below. PROBLEM: I want people to connect the SQL server through the our new metro/fiber line. At the moment they connect the SQL server over slow DSL line. I've enabled NAT on WEB machine. Port mapping works successfully. However people cannot connect the SQL server through fiber line. Instead, they connect over DSL line. From the WEB machine, I can telnet SQL on default port 1433. Below is the command line: C:\> TELNET 192.168.35.210 1433 NAT Properties for public interface of WEB Service: TCP Incoming port: 1433 Private Address: 192.168.35.210 Outgoing port: 1433 I've tested it at http://wh…

I've been banging my head on this one... I'm trying to get the roaming profiles to create automatically when the user logs in. I've followed the rights on the article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490855.aspx Which basically states: ----------- Table 3 NTFS Permissions for Roaming Profile Parent Folder User Account Minimum permissions required Creator/Owner Full Control, Subfolders And Files Only Administrator None Security group of users needing to put data on share. W32Time configuration
by Guest flabs- 3 replies

Hi, i'm looking for a W32Time configuration guide. We've a single site Actice Directory 2 w2k3 DCs native 2000 mode. All members of our domain, will sync thier time per default with the DCs exact the pdc emulator role, right? Is it nessesary to configure a gpo e.g. default domain policy to set the client settings e.g. dc1.domain.com? How must i configure the pdc activate the ntp client at the pdc for time sync with an external time source, and activate ntp server as sync source for our AD member clients? Or is it better all members sync thier time with an external time source and not with the pdc role? So many config options are really baffling …

Cannot ping client, even on LAN
by Guest dan- 9 replies

I'm going to repost this issue since the my information in the other post was getting confusing. I have one client on a small LAN that I cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to access, even fromt the LAN, although I can access all other clients with no problem. Upon investigation I find I cannot ping the client from my server (Windows Server 2000) with either IP address or computer name. If I run pathping, I see the computer name is resolved to the IP address so DNS is working. Pathping reports 100% loss of packets on the first hop- failure. I can ping the other way, from client to server, just fine. I've checked the firewall setting and it appears to unbl…

Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.
by Guest Tom wilson- 11 replies

I have a Windows 2003 R2 server running SQL Server 2000. This appears in the event log every 15 minutes: EventID: 7023 The Network Connections service terminated with the following error: Invalid access to memory location. Sometimes it's: EventID: 7023 The Cryptographic Services service terminated with the following error: Invalid access to memory location. The other odd thing is I can't get to Windows Update with this machine. I can get to other websites but WU takes foverer to load, then asks me if I want to update the softare. I say yes and it just sits there. In an article somewhere it suggested registering a list of DLL's related to Window…

Windows 2003 SP2 Deployment Question
by Guest johan- 1 reply
Hi All I am preparing to deploy SP2 to several hundred servers. The majority of which are SP1. In the read me doc it says: "If you are installing SP2 on a computer running SP1, to ensure that certain applications and components (such as Windows .NET Framework 2.0) function properly, install SP2 by using Microsoft Update" Using the Microsoft Update site would not be practical or do they mean use something like WSUS. Unfortunately that is not practical as we don't use WSUS, as we are using Altiris to deploy patches to servers. Does anyone see it being a problem using the WindowsServer2003-KB914961-SP2-x86-ENU.exe to upgrade servers to SP2?

My IAS server is set to create its log files in C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles (the default location) and they are simply not there. Accounting, authentication, and status are checked to be logged, service has been started, etc. I am inplementing 802.1x security on my new Trapeze wireless network...needless to say, the lack of logs makes troubleshooting a problem. :) Thanks in advance for your help. [W2003] Loading OCX -> Windows firewall pops up
by Guest Gilles Ganault- 3 replies
Hello I'm stuck trying to get a Visual Basic Classic program to load an OCX on a Windows 2003 Server on which I'm working with non-admin rights through Terminal Services: In the Form_Load() even, I'm trying to use the MSWinsock OCX control, but the firewall pops up telling me I don't have the required rights for this. When commenting out the Winsock1.* lines, no pop-up. The program works fine on a host on which I'm connected as admin. I'm a bit stuck at where to look for an answer: - firewall - user rights - user profiles - NTFS user rights - Terminal Services Thanks for any tip.

Domain users need access to local computer files
by Guest Jake- 5 replies
Hi, Some (infrequent) users within our network use their own notebooks to log on to our w2003 domain controller to access their home folders, shared resources like common files and printers. At the same time they have files in their local computer user account's 'My Documents' folder which they need to access (and modify) when logged in as domain users. However when logged in to a domain thay cannot access this local account's files. Can someone here provide an elegant solution on how to painlessly gain access to local account file resources when being logged on to a domain? Preferrably via GPOs or a script.. Thanks for any comment Jake

Removing WINS but still having netbios resolution
by Guest Joe- 2 replies
I have a Windows 2000 domain controller I am pulling out of an environment for various reasons. The 20 desktops were pointing to that device for WINS, but now they are going to be in the same workgroup on the same subnet. Since they are in the same workgroup, how can they still communicate by computer name? I assume ensuring netbios over tcp/ip would do it. Anything else required?

Hi, i am new to Windows 2008 worked with all previous Versions and i like the fact of installing Windows as a "Consoled" Windows like *nix Systems. But i did a full GUI installation to find out what the (new) OS can do for me. Now i want to know if there is a option/way to start the OS only with Core-Services, or whatever you call it. I mean is there a way to start the Server in Console Mode? By the Way, the 2008 Server is a big hit! Thanks in advance,... Phantom drives on passive node?
by Guest John- 3 replies
When I failover a clustered file server, the passive node continues to show the shared resources, but no drive information (i.e. space usage, etc.) and you cannot connect to it (obviously). A reboot cleans it up, but is there a fix for this? It's starting to cause issues w/ our server monitoring software seeing these drive letters that don't actually have drives attached to them. Thanks in advance. (Win 2k3 SP1)

Yesterday, I got messages saying "threat detected" This happened on on various files. I sent them to the virus vault. Then uninstalled the particular files, then scanned with AVG 7.5. It located more threats which it sent to the vault. I then scanned with lavasoft ad-aware, which found 18 critical objects, which I deleted. But now I can't get the comp to open onto the Internet. When I d' click ie on the desk top, nothing happens. It won't open when web file in links either. Moving a BDC to a PDC
by Guest dsfseattle- 4 replies
Originally I started with a Windows 2003 SBS 2003 server. Using the transition pack I moved to a fully functional Windows 2003 Server environment. I added a new Windows 2003 Server and set it up as a backup domain controller. Now I want to retire the original server. When I look in active directory I can see that both computers are listed as a domain controller. I try and follow instructions I have found to promote the new server to the primary domain controller, but I cannot follow the directions specified. Also, Server Manager is not found on the new server when I go to all programs, administrative tools. What is happening here?
