by Guest Eddie Walker- 2 replies

I want to create some redundancy in my network. I would like to have a 2nd server configured as a 2nd domain controller. When I tried to do this before, i got asked stuff about DNS, I thought last time it automaticall configured itself to be a 2nd domain controller et. anyway can someone give me some pointers on what to do is it possible to have this 2nd DC also serve up DHCP in the even the other DC is down and vice versa? Also would ike it to act as a 2nd DNS server (which is set to forward to the external isp's dns servers) i know id have to put a copy of gobal catalog on it if i want it to be able to handle logins, but i want full replication betwee…

Remote Site Design and DC Configuration
by Guest Neil- 3 replies
Hi, I came across this new design for DC's in remote sites. I have not done anything like this, but I am not sure whether it is the correct way to have done it. Correct me if I am wrong. There are 4 remote sites. Each remote site has a single domain controller and the workstations are getting their DHCP address from the domain controller through a helper address via the router. The workstations gateway is the router and not the domain controller. I am not sure how will the following be: 1. Authentication for users in remote sites? Will it be local authentication or they will it be via the WAN to the main site 2. How will the Group Policy be appli…

Re-connecting existing clients to a new server
by Guest Nick- 3 replies
I'm replacing my 2003 sbs server with a newly built server, again with 2003 SBS installed. My existing client pc's will remain the same, and will obviously have to re-join the new server. The question: Regarding the client side, will I have to join the existing client pc's to the new server by booting up the Pc's in to the 'local machine', and go through the process of "Connect to Server" again? Can I expect any problems when the client PC's re-connect to the new server? Any help\guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

-2003 Standard Edition SP1 -TvÄ scsi diskar. (No RAID card) -Software mirrored -Dynamic disk - 3 Volumes c:\ f:\ g:\ - 7GB free disk Problem - c:\ is 96% full and just realised i can't add som of the free disk to c:\ because of the mirroring. I had counted on the dynamic disk extend feature over the past years knowing that this day would come. But now I can't extend c:\ as I had wanted. Question - can I remove the mirroring and then extend c:\, then replace the mirroring? (After full backup to tape of course)

ntbackup.exe "unable to locate component" videoprt.sys
by Guest Huls- 3 replies

Hi! Win server 2003 (cluster): the ntbackup.exe won't start at all. Message: "Unable to locate component - The application has failed to start because VIDEOPRT.SYS was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" Both ntbackup.exe and videoprt.sys is located in the correct folder. Isn't videoprt.sys somehow critical for the display/system and cannot just be copied into the folder? Error with bluescreen can accur if videoprt.sys isn't working, or am i wrong? Any suggestions what might be the problem?

ABE (access based enumaration) not working
by Guest Gilbert- 2 replies
I'm running Windows Server 2003 x64 edition and I've installed ABE (access based enumration). I've rebooted the server but it doesn't seem to work. I tried to access the mail folder with all the subfollders in it. i.e. Share Apps Tech Uploads The user doesn't have access to any of the subfolders but I can still see all the subfolders. If I double click to try to access the subfolders, it says "access denied". But the whole point of ABE is not to be able to see those folders.

Stop error hotfix download
by Guest Anton- 8 replies
Hi, I have a problem of randomly getting Stop errors on my Win2003 machine. The event log shows the reason code to be "0x805000f" I found that this might be caused by the bug of NTFS driver (KB article #937455) and that hotfix is available. My question is: how could I get this hotfix that will hopefully solve my problem ? Thanks in advance.

Assigning Quotas for Users
by Guest Lois Morrett- 1 reply
We are in the process of migrating all of our users home directories to a new server using RoboCopy. We are planning on setting the same quotas for the users that they currently have. My question is this. The NTFS security is set up on the users folders as the user has Modify and Administrators group has Full Control. If Administrators has ownership of the folders/files and the quota is set to the owner of the file and administrators quota on the disk is set to unlimited what is the point of the quotas ? Doesn't it only affect the new files the user creates on the disk? The user can increase a file (say a pst) that's owned by Administrator. Should Adminis…

schtasks doesn't run programs with spaces
by Guest Jonathan Miller- 7 replies

I need to use the schtasks.exe to create a new scheduled task. One of the parameters allows you to specify the filename. The file I want to run is in the Program Files folder. I specify the path, the task gets created but will not run! The only way to fix it is to open the properties of the task in the GUI and add double quotes around the whole path! Is there an escape sequence or something I can use in the command line so that the quotes stay on the file name? Here is what I'm doing: schtasks /create /SC DAILY /ST 02:30:00 /TN test /TR "C:\Program Files\Test\Test.exe" /RU SYSTEM As you can see I have double quotes around the path so that the …

Microsoft Server/Networking Certifications

I would appreciate a short primer on Microsoft Networking and Server certifcation programs, course and self-study options, etc. A bit of background: I have been a Netware administrator for a decade or longer. I currently adminster an environment that includes 4 Netware 6.5 server and 1 Microsoft SBS Premium. I have learned enough to do what I need through the administration tools supplied with the server plus the occasional phone call to the hardware vendor, in this case Dell, who have been generous in their support of questions that are about the Server OS and not specifically about their hardware. The site in question is moving and has decided t…

Recreating Boot Device from Backup
by Guest Will- 2 replies

I'm using NT Backup on Windows 2003 Server 64-bit and backup the boot volume and System State. I then restore to an alternate device, with the intention to migrate this to boot device. On restore, I see that even restoring System State, none of the registry files in c:\windows\system32\config are being restored. What is the trick to restoring the complete boot volume, including System State, to an alternate drive? I cannot use Dynamic Disk to mirror on this computer. I installed Symantec Storage Foundation Basic, and it successfully managed to break dynamic replication of the boot volume. -- Will

Uninstalled Symantec Client and reinstalled. DCOM Server Process Launcher does not start and shows it is starting. Due to which PING does not work neither does the DHCP server running on the domain controller works. Workstations are not able to ping to the DC. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated for me to get this DCOM service up and running. Thanks in advance

Primary Domain Controller Problems
by Guest christopher_board@yahoo.co.uk- 1 reply

Hi all. I am having a few technical difficulties concerning our Primary Domain Controller at logon. Our network is currently set up with 2 domain controllers one which has the DHCP and the DNS configured on it. The second domain controller only has the DNS configured on it. Where I work is a school so we have GPO set up to redirect the desktop folder and the programs menu to a location on the server. The desktop and programs gets redirected to the primary domain controller which has the DNS and the DHCP configured on it. This works most of the time and re-directs the folders to the server but sometimes it does fail and redirect it and then when you refresh …

Suggestions on how to deal with a low disk space problem on a system drive
by Guest Bill Fuller- 3 replies
Unfortunately, I left the system drive size on my Dell Poweredge at the default (13GB). That is fine, until I later discovered that applications such as Sql Server 2005 do not have an option for installing components on a drive OTHER than the system drive. Service packs and application installations, even if not on the C: drive, also seem to consume space. So my questions are: 1. Short Term Solution: Is there any files (such as sp or app installation) files that I safely delete? 2. Long Term Solution: How can I increase the size of the system drive without having to completely rebuild from scratch?

Hello, I have a LH based service that does this . - starts up with LocalSystem. - Launches a thread. This thread impersonates a local user defined Administrator account. - This thread launches another child process. This is via CreateProcess( , DETACHED_PROCESS, ) with a NULL security descriptor. - Periodically, this thread will do OpenProcess on the child's process pid . - This OpenProcess(Process_query_Information,FALSE, pid) fails with ACCESS_DENIED error. - This service has a RequireAdministrator manifest file. - This service may be restared while the child process was active. However, it will still need the facility to check on the child's status …

Crypto\RSA\S-1-5-18 folder infection?
by Guest Lynn- 0 replies

Win SBS 2k3 Standard. My A/V occasionally flags files in this folder (C:\D&S\All Users\App Data\MS\... )as infected but does not specify the infection. I had questioned my local gurus at one point and was told to not worry about it. Files are usually deleted when found, before I know about it. Had one show up today, couldn't disinfect or delete so quarantined it. I'm trying to read up on what this folder is for, and will be submitting file to A/V company for research, but thought I'd post questions here concurrently. What is this folder for? Should I even be scanning this folder or should I exclude from A/V scan? Should I be *extremely* worried or just…
