Client OK but can't ping
by Guest dan- 8 replies
I'm trying to use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to a client (from the internet, not internal). If I use the client's IP address I succeed, but if I use the client's computer name I fail. Upon further investigation, if I remote into my server first (Windows Server 2000), then try to ping the client, it fails whether I use IP address or computer name. If I look in the forwarding zone of DNS on the server, the record correctly maps 192.168.1.212 to RWWS1, which is the client I'm trying to reach. Where should I look for the root cause of my problem (not being able to RDC to the client with the computer name). The client functions perfectly on the netw…

by Guest MSExchangeStudent- 6 replies

Hi The following 3 servers i do have (all latest updates) 1) Win 2003 Server with Exchange 2003 on it. All latest updates. (E-mail server) 2) Win 2003 Server. Pastel is on it with its SQL database component. 3) Win 2003 Server. I'm setting up Portal 2003 on here. SQL Enterprise is also installed here as Portal needs it I need to install and configure MOM 2005. On which server should be the most effective one. We do not have money for another box so it needs to go on one of these boxes. I read in the notes that MOM 2005 needs SQL to be installed with it. Seeing that 1) use a database of some sort as i understand it; 2) has allready a SQL component in…

W32time
by Guest John- 1 reply

I've just finished migrating NT4 Servers to Windows Server 2003 AD domain. There are no more NT4 servers in the network but Windows 2003 (Domain and Forest) still runs in interim mode. In this environment, there are some legacy NT4 (SP6a) workstation machines that aren't replaceable for quite sometime. Back in NT4 domain environment, I use W32Time.exe to sync with primary time server (NT4 PDC). Can I use w32time.exe to sync with Windows Server 2003 DC? The command "net time /set /y" works fine if I'm logged on as a user with permission to change system date/time. The problem is all users don't have (and can't have) permission to change time settings. I…

Service & Scheduled Task Passwords Not Being Retained
by Guest S Sainsbury- 1 reply
We had to do a system wide password change a couple of months back, as such we had to update some of the services that use domain accounts and also scheduled tasks. Since then every time there is a reboot or a service restart, the service or scheduled task will fail due to a logon failure. So again we reply the passwords and the service or scheduled task works............... But as soon as the service or server is rebooted, or in the case of a scheduled task, the next time its due to run, again it fails due to a logon issue. This has been ongoing for some months, and as you can imagine causes problems, we simply cant use the task scheduler now. …

Hi We have a native 2003 domain and forest, and make extensive use of group policy to deploy printers using the built in capability of Windows Server 2003 R2. My question is, if or when we need to migrate printers from our single server setup onto a cluster or another server, what tool can I used to update the publications in group policy? Regards Chris

File System / Directory Security
by Guest Mark- 4 replies

I have spent hours trying to accomplish this with no luck. Maybe someone in here has this implemented and could help me out. The concept here seems so simple, but no simple way to implement it..... I have a Windows Server 2003. I have a folder created called E:\Projects. I ONLY wand a few people to be able to create/modify/delete files and folders from within E:\Projects, but everyone else to have read-only access. Once there have been sub-folders created (by only a few designated people) in E:\Projects, everyone else can have full control of the sub-folders. In other words..... E:\Projects\: Everyone = read-only, allowed user(s) = ful…

2k3 adprep in 2000 Domain
by Guest John- 2 replies
Hello all: We currently have two 2000 Server boxes and will be getting a 2003 x64 soon. I understand that to join the new box to the domain I will need to run adprep. However, is it sufficient to run the adprep from the 32-bit media, as the adprep available o the the x64 CD will obviously only run on a 64-bit machine/OS. The only guide I could find implied that what was necessary for the joining of this new computer is to run adprep /forestprep then adprep /domainprep. Is this all that is necessary? Are there any better how tos on this issue? Thanks.

NT Server migration question
by Guest cberends- 7 replies

I have a "old" windows nt 4.0 pdc on a domain that is no longer needed, and we want all nt4.0 domain to be dead. this is the last server in the domain. Issue is I need to migrate the ip, name, permissions, iis (ftp and IIS), files to a new/different domain without the least amount of headache to the users. This server has automated processing attached to it and of course know one has documented all this processes. This server is also acting as a file server for ftp/file shares. O one other thing it is having hardware issues and is it out of warrenty so I need a resolution soon before everything is forced to do things the hard way. Does anyone know h…

New file won't inherit folder's security settings
by Guest Janet- 2 replies

I know permissions can be confusing. But I'm at a loss as to how to deal with our problem. New files saved to a folder are readable only by the creator, when we'd like them available to all users. Here's a description: Bob and Betty are members of the Users group. The server (running Server 2003) has a folder called "CompanyDocs" which is shared as "Docs". The "Docs" sharing permission: Everyone -- Full/Read/Write. The security on the Docs folder is: Administrators -- Full/Modify/Read&... (everything is checked except special) Users -- same as Administrators above Allow inheritable is unchecked Now we drill down several leve…

Setting up a new CA server /removing the old one
by Guest bay-br- 0 replies
In brief, we have a CA services (AD integrated)installed on a machine that might get removed off the network. Now, we have issued a few server certificates (for web access) and certs for EFS usage. We dont' want anything in the windows domain to break by removing this box. What I am planning to do: 1)Installa new Ent CA in the network (possible?) This will be the only CA in the domain eventually. 2)Revoke certs issued by old CA server 3)Issue new server certs (web access) using th new CA 4)If all is well, uninstall the old CA. My assumption is that the existing CA server is only used for EFS and server certificates. Is this feasible? Will I majorly break…

Performance monitor for Windows 2003 server
by Guest yvette.ye@gmail.com- 0 replies

HI...I am monitoring a server in performance monitor, and here is what I found: there is a client/server application: client - app server - SQL server, when the client run a function of the application, the CPU at the App server climbs up to 25%, and stays for about 5 minutes before the client can see the result. During the period, the memory, disk counter at the App server and SQL server are all low, except the CPU at the APP server maintains at 25% for 5 minutes. My first question is why the CPU not jump up to 100% and finish at a shorter time? My further test is that I have two clients running the same application, surprisely, the CPU is still at 25%, but…

Unable to see DLT7000 device on ntbackup

Yall My DLT7000 is correctly installed and I see the free media allocated. Once I start ntbackup it asks me for preparing the media since it was used on a different computer. Once that is done, I try to use the tape but, alas, the backup tab only allows me to use file (grayed out). As a consequence I am left without the capabilities to do a backup. System is WS03SP2R2 and I was able to run a full backup a day ago. Anyone has a clue on how to re-enable the usage of tape on ntbackup? Cheerio

What Can Be Blocking Our FTP?
by Guest razor- 7 replies

Hello-- We are in the process of migrating our IIS server from W2K3 to W2K3 64-bit and we cannot figure out why we can no longer ftp into the new IIS server from within the same subnet? the FTP service is started, and the FTP Sites is started in IIS. From a command prompt, if I enter in "ftp <server IP address>" we get a messages that says connection refused by remote host. If we try to use an FTP program, the connection just fails. I used the 'netstat -an' command on the IIS server and it shows port 21 is listening. Any help would really be appreciated.

Running Windows 2003 SBS, now certain apps won't launch: 1) Any administrative tools 2) Event viewer 3) Services viewer 4) ISA Management Any ideas why this is happening? Done a full cold reboot and problem persists. Other apps like Veritas Backup and Enterprise Manager work fine.
