This is an SBS 2003 SP1. The onset of this problem seems to coincide with installation of updates (not SP2, which has not yet been installed) a couple weeks ago. I find it both disconcerting and at the same time reassuring that my search for this topic turned up nothing...but here it is. Users printing some web pages to a network printer get only part of the text printed. Text in boxes or a different color, it seems, are missing--white space where there should be text. The print preview shows correctly. This is with various network printers and more than one kind of print server, although most are HPs with built in print servers, it is also happeni…

Windows 2000 Print Redundancy
by Guest jsbarone- 2 replies

Hi, I have a Windows 2000 Print Server that serves roughly 100 Printers, 24 hours a day at the hospital I work at. I noticed that there is absolutely no redundancy associated with this print server, so in an attempt to avoid certain disaster should said print server fail, I've been researching into how to make it redundant. I've come across a few solutions---the most attractive being making it a print server cluster. I've done my digging, but can't seem to find a comprehensive step by step guide to taking my single non-clustered windows 2000 server box and making it a windows 2000 server box with redundancy should it fail *without having to rebuild the box…

SMTP on IIS5 vs. II6
by Guest vesago73- 2 replies

We have two servers in our DMZ. Server A is running Windows 2k3. Server B is running Windows 2K. Both of them have a small script that sends mail to an SMTP server internal to our network. On the Windows 2k3 server you can refer to the SMTP server using the Netbios name only. When you do that on the Windows 2k server the piece of mail goes out to external DNS and does a lookup on our domain then sends the mail in through our MX records which forces it to go though our Spam filters. If you specify the FQDN of the SMTP server on the Windows 2k server then the piece of mail goes straight to the SMTP server. Is there something in IIS 5.0 that requires a FQDN name ver…

Alternatives to Net Use
by Guest Smithers- 10 replies

I'm rewriting a small utility app that, amongst other tasks, copies files from the local machine to servers on the local network. The existing implementation executes a batch file that executes the "net use" command to map a drive to each destination server/share. The program then tests via "if (File.Exists())" to ensure that the mappings were successful. I'd like to find a better way to copy the files out to the servers... and eliminate the batch file and "net use" altogether if possible. Is there an easier way to map drive letters than via batch file and net use? Is there a way to copy files without mapping a drive letter at all? I'm developing thi…

Hiya all, I am gonna build a network and this is what its gonna look like(I hope), http://i16.tinypic.com/4rafpn7.jpg PC1 : Windows XP Professional PC2 : Windows 2003 Server PC3 : Windows XP Professional the big question I have now is the following, people here have already told me I should set up forwarders in my Windows 2003 DNS section, or just forget about using them and just stick with the root hints already in there. But my big issue with this is, my PC2 isn't supposed to be online all the time, its actually a fileserver that I occasionaly boot so I can transfer my files to. But the way people here suggested I set it up(like you can see in th…

Shadow Copies
by Guest Bartly- 0 replies

Windows Server Std. 2003 SP2 We have had shadow copies runniong for months now but I recently discovered they are being deleted except for a days worth. For example, when I checked this afternoon, I see a 7:00 AM and 12:00 for today and only the 12:00 from yesterday. The volume is on an iSCSI SAN and there is plenty of room. The volume has about 500 GB of data and we have allocated 100 GB for shadow copies. In the shadow copies properties on the volume it only reports 867 MB being used. Any ideas why our shadow copies history is gone and it is only keeping the previous days worth? Thanks

I have a DC that is currently running 2003 standard OS. I want to upgrade it to Enterprise. All other DCs are running 2003 enterprise. I would think I could simply do an os upgrade without disrupting AD. Can I just run the os upgrade or do I have do DCpromo to remove it from AD, upgrade os, and DCpromo it back? thank you Mitch

Hello, I am trying to get Microsoft ADS v 1.1 to work in a test environment. I have the ADSMASTER server with all the ADS applications and DHCP running, it is running Windows 2003 R2. I have another server that has Windows 2003 and some applications that I wanted to capture. I created the device for this new server and specified the MAC address. It shows up in the ADS Admin as "Windows Connected". I also ran the script to create the jobs based on the sample scripts. Whenever I run the capture image job on my device it reboots the server that I want to image but this server then just boots back up on his hard drive and into the OS. I have also tried the re…

Disk Quota shows wrong results > files owned by Admin & not the us
by Guest Jason Lehman WC- 0 replies

I have a file server that houses all our users folders (home folders.) When we get a new users, I have to logon to the file server & create a folder, setup share/security. The problem in doing that is, the file created is owned by the Admin; since that is how I am logged on. When I look at disk quota, the Admin account is shown for using up space that should be credited towards the users. I have inherited this domain & would like some ways to... 1. Set ownership up on curent & new files/folders so users own their own folders, not the admin. We have too many users to do this manually. 2. Create a policy that when a new user is created, a home fold…

I have an HP Server with a Raid5, three hard drives in teh array, two drives - C and D. Both my drives are filling up and it's affecting performance. I've cleaned up all I can. I want to add an additional drive to the array this weekend. I have documentation on using the HP Array Configuration Utility to add the new drive into the array, but am stuck there for then adding that new space to the C and D drives. I have downloaded DiskPart.exe from Microsoft and am reading through the documentation. It's a little confusing to me right now and I'm nervouse as a cat about attempting this. Can anyone help me by listing the simple steps (commands) that…

W2k3 R2 - MMC could not create the snap-in

I've just added the WINS server role to the DC we have and I get the following error when trying to open the WINS snap-in: "MMC could not create the snap-in" The other DC has also had the WINS role added and the WINS snap-in works just fine. I even copied the snap-in from the working DC to the non-working DC to see if that would make any difference (in case it was a corrupt snap-in) but I get exactly the same results. A search around only produced fixes for errors on Vista. This Windows 2003 R2. Any suggestions?

Best way to secure
by Guest Dragon- 2 replies

Hi, We are planning on setting up some 'regular' account password security and audits. This is a test lab to come up with some test config. In this config all users will be required to change their passwords every 30 days and other usualy audit settings. This is all good for all users except that I will have some service accounts that I do not want to apply this to. What is the best way to handle these exceptions? Thanks.

Article 926031 states that Windows Server 2003 SP2 has a compatibility issue with Exchange 2003 OWA and refers to another article (841560) for a resolution to the problem. From 841560 I infer that the fix is only for SP1. Is there any update to 841560?

Performance monitor for Windows 2003 server
by Guest yvette.ye@gmail.com- 0 replies

I have been monitoring a server with 4 G RAM, 4 CPUs, the disk: is at a 14 SAN RAID 5 disk group, I have setup the alerts, the following are some of the performance counters show in Event Log, I have some questions about them: 1) Counter: \\servername\Process(msmdsrv)\% Processor Time has tripped its alert threshold. The counter value of 792.187223329792 is over the limit value of 99. my question is: How is possible a CPU% is over 100%? Is it because there are 4 CPUs and it shows as 8 CPU instants in Windows, and number 792 means 792% when it sums up for 8 CPUs? 2) Counter: \\servername\System\Processor Queue Length has tripped its alert threshold. The c…

I set up a new file server and I'm trying to access the C$ drive. I have added the domain admin account with Full access to the drive. When I try to access it with that domain admin login, I get the following error: \\server\c$ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again. ---- I checked the server and I do not have any open sessions. Any ideas???

Product activation error 1000 code 80070002
by Guest Marcus Bentley- 0 replies

I have a remote domain controller that has been in place for around 2 1/2 years that suddently a little after midnight this morning started coming up with this error. It is installed with a volume license media, with the same product key as around 60 other servers on the same network. I don't want to jump in doing stuff as the server is a fair distance to get to if I do something to trully stuff it up. Not excluding the fact that there is around 500 GB of user data to restore if it goes wrong. Does anyone know what causes this kind of issue? Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows Product Activation Event Category: None Event ID: 1000 Date: 21/08/20…
