Tracking rogue users
by Guest Brian J- 2 replies

I have been asked to investigate a Windows server. The server is unknown to me but is 2003. The client suspects rogue user activity. The user was a support technician with administrator privileges. The activity occurred some weeks ago. I have few details but the activity included, but was not necessarily limited to, a large number of outbound e-mails generated automatically by a program. The client has firewall, anti virus and anti spam software installed but I do not know which programs. Please can anyone suggest ... .... any post incident strategies for finding or tracing rogue activity .... utilities that verify the integrity of System files a…

RSM eject command line errors, Help please
by Guest CLarke- 1 reply

In my backup scripts for Windows 2003 server we use rsm eject /LF"Library_id" /Astart and it ejects the tapoe all the time. When I send the same in Windows XP it says Additional arguments required. I have no idea what additional arguments are required. It is an HP USB DAT 72 Tape Drive, and it works perfectly on a Windows 2003 server, but not on Windows XP. I even tried the Guid and changing the command to /LG"GUID" but it still says additional arguments required. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

rsm
by Guest Jeremy Schubert- 1 reply

I found a great backup script at http://www.infoshop.co.uk/products/infoshop/scripts/bn-backup.htm. I have to hard code the GUID for each tape, no problem there. But another web article I was reading said that sometimes just the tape GUID was not enough. But a logical GUID maybe required. If I format the tape myself using RSM, then is there usually only one partition (unless I set the format differently) so I only really need the tape GUID and not the logical GUID? Thanks,

Currently we use a Windows 2003 Storage Server as our file server and this has all our asp and files stored which is accessed from about 10 IIS6 machines using UNC share. We are now upgrading to Windows 2008 IIS7 and wondered if it would be faster if the file server was now moved to Windows 2008 as well to take adventage of SMB 2.0 Is Windows 2008 server faster natively than the Windows 2003 Storage Server in this type of environment for serving files? Thanks.

"Windows cannot connect to the domain"
by Guest PhilipB- 2 replies

2 client machines have suddenly developed this message at logon: "Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found." These PCs are running XP Professional SP3, on an SBS2003 domain, and are shown as client computers on the domain controller. These PCs have successfully been on the domain for 11 months. I have tried alternate passwords (which are know to be good passwords as they are in use on a daily basis but still get the same message. I have tried the usual passwords for the affected PCs on other PCs and they work on the alternate machines. …

Applying share permissions is slow
by Guest Justin- 1 reply
Hello, We have a Windows 2003 SP2 file server in a 2003 native mode AD that uses Global Security groups for controlling share level access. Once a user is added to the security group, the permissions don't seem to be active right away, and they continue to get access denied errors until they Log off and back on to their workstation. Why is the new group membership not recognized right away and is there any way to have it apply without the user doing a relogin? All of our PC's are XP SP2. Thanks! Justin

Terminal services keeps breaking
by Guest yttep.giarc@gmail.com- 0 replies

This is driving me nuts. Terminal services keeps breaking on our servers. The error message you see from the Remote Desktop Client is, "The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer." The server is listening on port 3389 (svchost.exe). A package capture shows the TCP three-way handshake completes and then the server sends a Reset. That is. SYN (from client) SYN/ACK (from server) ACK (from client) RST (from server) Every time it happens I'm able to fix the problem by reinstalling the Terminal Services Device Redirector using the following command, but I have no idea why it keeps happening. devcon.exe -r install %windir%\inf\ma…

I've got a server with lots of extra group policies set up by the people who where previously managing that server. Is there a quick way to get rid of all those additional settings and just return the GPOs to as they were by default when the server started servicing our network so I can then set them up as needed? yaro

Running a Windows 2003 server and I'm running low on C drive space. So I've done the following 1. Repointed the spooler directory using print server properties -> Advanced -> D:\ blah blah 2. There are also two default shares print$ which point to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers and prtprocs$ C:\WINDOWS\system32\prtprocs\w32x86. The print$ share as some 300 mb of files in it. 3. I copies the content of both folder to the D drive repoint the shares to the D drive and mirrored the share and NTFS permission. I did not delete the original location at this point. 4. Restarted the server and I can print. But when I run the Print Migrator tool and l…

Rebuilding First DC in Forest
by Guest K- 2 replies

Due to a variety of software glitches and hardware issues I need to rebuild the first DC in my forest. By rebuild I mean format and reinstall the entire OS. There are 2 DCs in the forest (both 2003 Standard SP2). Each has DNS installed (AD integrated) and each has WINS. DHCP is running on the first DC. Both DCs are GCs. All FSMO roles are on this first DC at present. Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005 is running in the domain but on a different box - not sure if this is relevant. Can someone please advise me of the correct sequence to perform so I don't miss any steps out. So far I am thinking the following: To flatten machine: 1 - Transfer FSMO r…

Running into a problem trying to copy files 150GB to 300GB from a Windows Storage Server 2003 SP2 to a server running Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 . The file will begin to copy and then I will get a message saying that, "Cannot copy filename: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." If I try to copy the file again, it appears to stop at the same place each time. If I go to the other server and attempt to copy from the storage server, then I get a message that there is no drive space on the storage server, yet there is plenty of space available. If I reboot the Windows Server and attempt the copy from either direction, it w…
