I've been googling this KB941644 update to see if anyone has experienced problems and I'm seeing some reports of slowness and other intermittent problems after installing this update. Once uninstalled, they report problem is fixed. I'm considering updating all my servers, but wanted to check out here to see if anyone has applied the patch and if you have experienced any problems? Thanks.

We have a dead DC (due to hardware failure) that we would like to remove from AD. It's a 2003 server, GC, no FSMO roles, w/ DNS and DHCP. Since we cannot run DCPROMO, can we use NTDSUTIL to remove it even if the server is offline? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Windows Server 2003 - Remote Desktop Hanging
by Guest Jaison- 3 replies

Hi All, I manage a Microsoft SBS 2003 server. I swapped out routers and since then when I attempt to connect to the server via Remote Desktop Connection, I can sign in, however, the connection will hang, it will start to paint the server desktop and then just stop. I click 'x' on the connection, it will exit out with no problem. All of the ports I normally open for Remote Desktop are open like 3389, 4125, etc. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! Hopefully this is the right group! Jaison

?? Newbie Book Recommendations, Two Simple Questions ??
by Guest Tom Baxter- 1 reply

Hello all, I was hoping to get some recommendations on very good Server 2003 beginner books (or online resources). I'm hoping to find material that is especially strong in explaining Accounts, Permissions and Policy Settings, from a BEGINNER'S perspective. I'm banging my head against the wall trying to understand these concepts. I would also like to ask a couple newbie questions, if you don't mind. I am using Server 2008, RC1. In "Computer Management | Local Users and Groups | Users" I see the local user accounts, Administrator and Guest. I know there are several additional built in accounts that Windows creates as well: NT AUTHORITY\LocalService, …

Startup Troubleshooting

My copy of Server 2003 will not boot this morning. It may have downloaded an update yesterday that is causing the problem as it does that automatically. On Tuesday I had a corrupt system32/config/system file which I replaced using System Recovery and the system started. Now, it will not go through the entire boot process, last known good copy does nothing, and even in Safe Mode, I get to the Windows Starting screen (and once to the login screen) but then the system automatically reboots. Since it continuously reboots, I don't know how to get anywhere to even start finding out what is wrong. Any ideas or thoughts(since I am IT in name ONLY), would be w…

VSS not working correctly on 2003?
by Guest Jerome- 10 replies
Hi, I've enabled the Volume Shadow Copy Service on my Windows 2003 servers and I've scheduled them to make copies every day but they don't do them!? If I click on previous versions I only get the first day I've installed the VSS as an option to restore from (and yes, this file has changed a few times over the last days!). On the other hand if I MANUALLY click 'create now' in the Shadow Copies panel on my server then it makes a shadow copy and this is also reflected in the 'previous versions' on my client PCs. Any ideas why it's not making the copies according to the schedule?? Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot! Jerome

WSUS Question - Deploying WSUS to an addtional server
by Guest Saral6978- 0 replies

I have an existing WSUS environment with an established database on a SQL server. How do I go about deploying WSUS to a new server in the existing environment. Do I just run the installation and I will just be prompted to choose an existing database? The WSUS env that is running now was something set up before I got here and I'm not familiar with the setup process as I personally haven't implemented it before. Thanks for any help - Hope this is in the right area - I didn't see a WSUS thread. Sara

Security Log Question & Hotfix?
by Guest Daniel P. Cayea- 9 replies
I have this peculiar problem with my security log on my domain controller. I've set up my security log to overwrite events as needed, but the size is large enough that it will not overwrite events unless they are like two weeks plus old. Problem is, every time I log onto my server I get the "Security Log is full" message. I go into the event viewer and change the atributes of the log, and it gets set back to "Do not overwrite". I remember a while back there was a hotfix to fix this, can anyone remember it or help me with this issue? Thanks Dan

Password Reminders
by Guest JCace- 3 replies

Helllo I have started at a new job this week and the organisation is suffering some password issues. They already have a GPO password policy in place, with expiry set to 30 days and the reminder period set to 7 days. The issue seems to be that the password reminder will flash up sating the password will expire in 1 day; however the users tend to ignore this, assuming that they can change their passwords tomorrow. What seems to be happening, is that their password will actually expire that day, typically at around 11 am. This is causing a high volume of calls to the service desk and a lot of work for the service desk operators to unlock and reset p…

Software restriction policy doesn't restrict
by Guest futro08@gmail.com- 0 replies

I'm testing a software restriction policy but for some reason it doesn't restrict user as expected. I've created an OU for terminal server and linked a group policy. In the user section I have created a path rule under "User Configuration \Windows Settings\Security Settings\Software Restrictions\Additional Rules" restricting software from running on path "C:\test". So far this works as expected, I can't run for example .exe files from that folder. However, if I try to run a help file (.hlp) which is in the list of designated file types, the restriction does not apply and I'm able to run it. It seems that the designated file types list doesn't work. Any hi…
