What is the best way to package print drivers with all needed options like (2nd tray, stapler, duplex unit) and change defaults like printing duplex so that when this shared printer is installed all of the options and defaults are packaged with it. Any help would be appreciated.

Default user profile in Netlogon
by Guest Scott- 2 replies

Is it possible to add a registry setting to the ntuser.dat, which is stored in the default user profile (Netlogon share) without loading the profile to a workstation and then back up to the Netlogon share? In other words, is there an editor that can open the ntuser.dat and allow me to make a registry modification so that it will apply to all new users? TIA

Printer servers - report usage
by Guest Eric Baines- 4 replies

We have a number of windows print servers. For environmental reasons, I'd like to be be able to produce reports that show how much usage people are making of printers. Can anyone suggest any applications that will help me do this? Ideally, the data would be captured into a SQL database, and I could then produce intranet reports showing how many prints and how many pages each person and each printer has done over a set period. If it could show things like whether it is using high or low ink settings, double sided or single sided etc, that would be a bonus, but I'm less concerned about that. Any ideas?

75 GB limit in Windows Server 2003 R2
by Guest Harold Naparst- 15 replies

What is the meaning of the 75 GB storage limit in Windows Server 2003 R2? Does that mean that the sum of the whole company's mail in Exchange, files, etc cannot exceed 75 GB? Seems absurd. An average user has about 5 GB of mail, so this would mean that if the company exceeds 15 people, we can't use this product or would need to buy more servers. Harold

RDP Fails - No Error message
by Guest sp2nue@gmail.com- 0 replies

Folks, I am having a very strange problem with Win 2003 server and RDP. RDP will work normally without problem for a few days, and all of a sudden it will just stop working without any logging or error messages. The symptom is that when a client tries to connect to the server, the normal prompts are presented on the client, and when it tries to establish the connection, the client just disappears without an error. Normally, the client would bring up the window and a session would start, but in this case, it just dies. When this happens, no one can connect and my only option to re-enable it is to reboot the server, which is not a very elegant solution and al…

2003R2 Enterprise Minimum C:Drive Size Question
by Guest EDAWG- 2 replies
Due to some technical/political issues at my work I am being forced to install 2003 R2 on an IBM blade configuration(HS21) that doesn't come with hot swappable drives. In an effort to minimize the impact of losing a drive I am considering going with solid state drives, as they are billed as 3X more reliable. My question is this...The max drive size for solid state on the blades right now is 16GB. I can get two and set them up as RAID1, but I am nervous about total drive space. The apps and its data will live no a SAN so I am only installing the OS, but do you think this is cutting it too close with space? My other option is to use 73GB SAS non hot swa…

Event Log Registry Values
by Guest Joe- 2 replies

This is a new post, as I did not receive any responses from an earlier post. I will try to ask the question in a better way. I have two Win2K3 servers that I need to increase the size of the App and Sys logs in the Event Viewer. A change in the size in the properties box doesn't produce any errors, but the change is lost as soon as I click 'OK'. I have also made the change in the registry at HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/Services/EventLog The change is accepted and shows up correctly in the Event Log properties page, but upon rebooting the server the values are changed back to default. Can anyone tell me what would be changing these values? I have n…

Win2000 server has lost its ability to read security databases
by Guest neilbehagg@yahoo.co.uk- 0 replies

Hi all, I've got a problem on a Windows 2000 server that I really need some help with. Let me explain the symptoms. The issue was first raised as a problem with SQL2000, we were getting the dreadded 'cannot generate sspi context' error. Alot of troubleshooting later lead me to find that the server can't open the secedit.sdb local policy database. All I get is 'An unknown error occured when attempting to open the database'. I've verified the secedit.sdb database, even deleted and recreated it. gave everyone access to the system drive as its mentioned in a KB somewhere. I finally opened the sdb file from another server, proving that its not the file thats the …

Can Not Update or Install anything on Windows 2003 Domain Controller
by Guest William Holmes- 0 replies

Hello, I am having trouble updating my domain Controllers. Windows Updates as Well as other installations are failing indicating that I don't have permission to update Windows 2003. Other systems in the domain update just fine. And if I demote a controller it will allow updates. I think this may have something to do with the Default Domain Controller Group Policy. Can someone point me to a list of the default/correct settings for the Default Domain Controller Policy or offer an alternate explanation for whey I don't have permissions to update my Windows 2003 Domain Controllers. Thanks Bill

Hi, I've just got a new laptop running Vista. On my old PC I connected to the net with a DSL modem. I am not very computer literate, so when I switched on my laptop, and done all the setup, this message came up that I was connected to the Internet, as I had no modem attached I thought this weird, so I done a bit of digging and came up with a list of networks, and found I was connected to a Linksys public connection, could anyone please explain this connection to me, and will it harm my laptop. I have no wireless router. Thank you in advance for your help.

by Guest Alien- 0 replies

I am experiencing for few months problem with VSS writers. Few days ago I reregistered DLLs related to VSS, see following link for detalis (http://blogs.technet.com/sdoakes/archive/2006/02/03/418722.aspx) and applied KB940349. After that ntbackup of system state finally worked. VSS writers worked perfectly, no error shown. Yesterday I found that Scheduled task of system state backup made by ntbackup was sitting for hours making no progress. Looking in event viewer I found error: Event Type: Error Event Source: VSS Event Category: None Event ID: 7001 Date: 14.1.2008 Time: 9:07:44 User: N/A Computer: PDC Description: VssAdmin: Unable to create a sh…
