Hi, Our server runs 2003 with XP client. Our XP clients takes about 5-10 seconds to login and until you see the start menu. Introduction: We have had issues before were login took as long as a couple of minutes which was a troublesome timesink for us. We fixed this issue however, by setting the DNS manual to point to out server. To make it simple I used the groupeditor and specified what DNS clients are supposed to use. Simple and efficient, and the alternative to change dns on clients are now grey:ed out - just like I want it. Our problem: Recently I setup a new client and I discovered that it was not affected by the servers DNS policy and did not…

AD Restore
by Guest a3matrix@gmail.com- 5 replies

Greetings to the group: I am looking at doing an AD restore from tape from last December not for the purposes of rolling back the current environment, but because we need data of some type that is no longer available. Is it possible to perform an authoritative restore of the system state to a DC then unplug that DC from the network so it can't replicate and wind up with a DC with AD on it as it was last December? Rather than squeeze the trigger and wind up finding out the (possibly) really bad way, I thought I would read up and also ask others. So far, the reading has not given me a warm fuzzy. TIA Drew

Small Office Setup Suggestions Requested
by Guest NC Beach Bum- 3 replies
I am setting up a small office server with 3 users on a single Windows 2000 Server. The current plan is to keep things at low level of complexity in this 3 person office. So what I am thinking is to setup the server as a local file server with all local accounts and passwords that do not expire. One person has a laptop and they want to use offline folders with automatic file synchronization when they dock and undock their laptop. Will this work on Windows 2000 Server? Do I have to move them up to Server 2003? Does I have to install a domain with active directory? All thoughts and recommendations are most welcome! -- NC Beach Bum

I am running a server with Windows Server 2003, some client machines are W2K and some are XP Pro. Is there a way of limiting certain actions by users that log onto the network. The type of things that I would like to restrict are as follows: Limit access to what's available on the 'Start' menu Restrict 'Right Click' options Restrict access to various drives Restrict ability to use .exe files Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Glenn

The file ntds.dit corrupted and the DC can't be started in normal state. Go to AD recovery mode and tried to run ntdsutil and still can't be recovered. Can anyone help me to resolve this problem? I'd read some web info and nearly all of them are having below error message:- lsass.exe-System Error: Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory Service cannot start. Error Status: 0xc00002e1. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into Directory Services Restore Mode, check the event log for more detailed information. However, for me, the error code is 0xc00000e5 instead of 0xc00002e1. Is there …

I have two w2k3 enterprise domain controller in a single forest-domain setup. Everything has been fine and working for 2 years now. We to shut all our systems down this past weekend due to electrical maintenance of the building. When we power all the servers backup, we did not have any problem except for one. We discovered that our local DNS MX record is not correct when we use nslookup to query the record. When I run the set query=mx command, we are getting the lowest priority MX record. I have 3 MX record that has an A record with the associated IP as well as PTR. When I ping each mail server IP, I get the correct netbios name but for some reason …

Hello - I have a citrix server (PS 4.0 enterprise) running windows 2003 SP1. This system has all of a sudden started rebooting on it's own... Originally, the reboot was blaming UPHClean, so i uninstalled it and it still is rebooting randomly... I cannot pinpoint the reboot - it seems to happen when someone either logs off a session in citrix, or opens a session... I cannot pinpoint exactly what's going on to make the reboot occur... this is the most recent bug check (any help would be GREATLY appreciated - let me know if you need more info too): Microsoft ® Windows Debugger Version 6.6.0007.5 Copyright © Microsoft Corporation. Syncing remote servers

Here is what I'm trying to do. (if there is a better way let me know). I have a small domain with 1 Win2003 Domain Controller that is also the file server. Another domain controller that is the Exchange server and another Win2003 server that is used for sql and terminal services. I want to setup a remote site with basically the same setup, but I want to be able to sync the servers through a VPN. Should I setup the second site as a completely different domain and then just do a trust between them? Would this allow the users to maintain only one password? What happens when the communication is broken between the sites? Are the users and pa…

How to map a network drive whithout anybody logged
by Guest emmanuel meurant- 4 replies

Dear All, A service on a windows 2003 server needs to accès some files on an AS400 (you can think of the as400 as a Windows machine in another domain). I have to map a drive to this AS400 specifying alternate credentials not known in the windows 2003 domain. Doing this once logged with an admin account is very easy either via the graphic interface or via a "NET USE " script. But, how could I have this mapping created even when nobody logs onto the server. (the mapping has to be used by a service). Thanks for any idea, Emmanuel Switzerland -- mcse 2000 - mcsa 2003 and still a lot to learn...

DHCP Offering addresses on different subnets
by Guest MrGumby- 0 replies

I have a dhcp server that for some is offerring an IP address on one subnet, then immediately offering a device an IP address on another subnet. The network capture shows a DHCP Discovery, then DHCP Request, then two DHCP NAKs from one subnet then two DHCP NAK's from the other subnet. They are all from the same DHCP server. There are available addresses. I have restarted the service and the machine & this has not made a difference. What could be going wrong here??
