Remote Access to Windows 2008 Server
by Guest Patrick- 0 replies
We just install our first Windows 2008 Server. We find that when we use RDP to access it, it works as remote access (we haven't used /admin option). From the web, we learn that Windows 2008 supports 2 active session if TS is not installed. If it is true, we wonder why RDP session is a Console Session. Your advice is sought.

Hi, Has anyone managed to get remote desktop on 2008 to actually look reasonable? It's like Vista set to Windows Classic. Almost everything just looks wrong. Server Manager is fine as are other things in MMC, but Windows Explorer, Task Scheduler, the Start Menu; they're all over the place. Or have I just got something setup wrong? Gary

Re: 2003 server hangs at Applying Computer Settings - Can't login
by Guest Bullitt- 0 replies

Re: 2003 server hangs at Applying Computer Settings - Can't login Hi Thread, I had exactly the same problem. Normal boot activity, IP stack comes up OK, server making all the right noises but hangs at the "Applying Computer Settings". By 'hangs' I mean, the system was obviously still responsive, but would not complete this process, hence no CTRL + ALT + DEL screen. The server was running Windows 2003 SBS server SP2 on a HP ML350 G5 which has known issues with the NIC (HP NC373i). I updated the driver to the latest edition, latest BIOS and latest NIC BIOS firstly and then opened a command prompt and did... C:\>NETSH WINSOCK RESET OK. Reboot to com…

Help giving pass through for iMac's on Windows 2003 server ISA 200
by Guest PghTech- 0 replies

I have a Windows 2003 ISA 2004 server. We also have a number of Mac's that don't authenticate against the proxy server at login, and therefore require authentication through the browser when they go to get on the internet. The problem we have ran into is that we have installed Adobe CS3 software which requires that it goes out and registers. Unfortunately, since this all occurs behind the scenes, there is no way to authentic and the software fails to access the internet. The only solution we can think of is to give the iMac's pass through abilities of the ISA server. Not being an ISA admin or expert can someone tell me what the best way to go about …

Hey all, I have a Public drive that I need to give special access to. (P: = public) Example: 1. All folders in the root of the P drive: no one in the office is allowed to create, move, delete, rename and modify the root folders except for certain groups. 2. Subfolders within the root of the P drive: no one in the office is allowed to move, delete, rename or modify the subfolder except for certain groups. Everyone is allowed to create new subfolders within the folders already created within the P drive. 3. Documents within the sub-subfolders: full access to everyone to create, save, delete, modify and rename documents. Is th…

Perfmon Logical Disk Counters not availabe remotely
by Guest Bob In the Noc- 0 replies
HI all, I've got several servers that don't offer logical disk counters when accessed remotely. The counters are present when the server itself runs perfmon, they show up and report accurate info. However, when using another system to pull them, the Logical Disk group doesn't even show up. Anyone know about where or how these counters work? I've already verified that diskperf -Y is on (which 2003 indicates is on by default), as well as forcibly toggling this value, no luck so far. -- Remotely managing and monitoring Phoenix AZ Networks

Hi, we just installed a file server (and print server) with good hardware configurations. However, users experience very poor performance when reading files from folders in that server. Curiously, uploading a file works fine, the problem is when we try to open it. Any tip to start looking for a solution? Regards. Daniel

Can anyone point me to some kind of technet article or white paper that explains how the Win2k3 file resource manager determines duplicate files? I've got a pain in the a** user who insists on knowing the criteria Windows uses when it identifies two or more files as being duplicates. Thanks!

Issues Configuring SMTP for 1st Time
by Guest tuned- 1 reply
We're doing some testing w/ a W2k3 SE vm and would like to test the ability for mail to be sent directly from the server without using Exchange. The VM currently has an internal address on our network but I can give it an external one if that helps in the matter. IIS has been added as well as a Default SMTP server. Authentication has been configured to "anonymous access" and relay has been set to allow "all except the list below" with the list empty. This is a stand-alone server not part of a domain so under the domain name for the SMTP settings all that's listed is the server name. I've tried opening a telnet session to the mail server and sendin…

WSUS expired IE7 update problem
by Guest andrewg- 0 replies

So it seems MS released an update rollup for IE7 on Oct. 4 2007, then promptly expired it due to problems. Now when I try to go to setup IE7 to deploy to Windows XP the WSUS 3 server is telling the the update has expired. What am I supposed to do now to deploy IE7? Background info: http://www.wsus.info/forums/index.php?showtopic=11083 http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services/browse_thread/thread/aee632b2989b3fec/760158f130fd0ac5?hl=en&lnk=st&q=ie7+expired+wsus# I can see from this I am not alone with this problem. MS needs to release a working updated rollup or I have to figure out how to get the April 11 2007 W…

Hi I'm having problems with the following scenario: A manager of a department has access to a shared folder that the rest of his department regularly file documents. This folder is located on at a share on a Windows 2003 R2 file server. This manager has made this folder, and sub-folders, available off-line. If a user other than this manager creates another folder within this folder it is not marked as available off-line and no files in this folder are synched. If the manager navigates to this new folder whilst on-line and creates a file within it, the file, the folder and all other files within it are now marked as available off-line. This i…

RDP Fails - No Error message
by Guest sp2nue@gmail.com- 0 replies

Folks, I am having a very strange problem with Win 2003 server and RDP. RDP will work normally without problem for a few days, and all of a sudden it will just stop working without any logging or error messages. The symptom is that when a client tries to connect to the server, the normal prompts are presented on the client, and when it tries to establish the connection, the client just disappears without an error. Normally, the client would bring up the window and a session would start, but in this case, it just dies. When this happens, no one can connect and my only option to re-enable it is to reboot the server, which is not a very elegant solution and al…
