Since Intel is has released quad core processors will future releases of SBS 2003 and later support quad core technology? I've built a few servers recently using 2 dual core Xeon processors with SBS 2003 standard and from what I've seen it recognizes each core as a physical processor. On Microsofts website it says that SBS 2003 will support 2 "physical" processors but each core to my understanding is not considered a physical processor. Also does anyone know of a patch that will fix this?

Create new certificate Authority - Not Move
by Guest Curious_2k3- 1 reply

Good Morning, I have reviewed the articles at the following addresses: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298138/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555012 However, using the original CA Name is not an option. I will not be trying to import anything from the retiring CA, so this will be a completely new and fresh install on a server with a different name. The main questions I have: 1. Can I create a new certificate authority on the new server with a different name and bring it online without incident? 2. If there are caveats to look for when installing a new CA, what are they? Thanks in advance. Curious

I'm a primarly a sales/desktop technician for a small business with really limited experience on servers. I would like to get on a track to MCSE but from what I hear the 70-290 is not a test to jump into without previous knowledge. Anyone have any suggestions on books or something I can just gain good experience doing? Chris MCTS

Uptime.exe Reporting Error
by Guest John Bradbury- 4 replies
Guys, we run a nightly batch job to check uptime on around 300 servers. Recently we have had a few reporting errors where uptime.exe shows the uptime as say 10 days when we know for a fact the server was rebooted that evening before the batch ran. I know from what little linformation I've been able to find that uptime generates the calculations from the event logs. Any thoughts?

We want to setup a user on our domain with access to our Windows Server 2003 event logs, specifically the security log. What is the minimum requried for him to access this? Does he need to RDP in as a domain admin, or is there some other way to access this log? Thanks!

I just installed CA on one of our DS, I can request a certificate as a domain admin, but when I try to do it as a regular user I get an error message saying "You do not have permission to send to this recipient". I've checked the permissions and domain users have read and enroll rights. What step did I miss? Thanks.

Hotfix for 0xc0000006 Unable to Initialize Application KB 818528 Doesn't apply to 2003, but the registry entry is not in 2003 Is this fixed in 2003? There is a registry entry that is necessary in Server 2000 when Terminal Services accesses applications from a Network Share, that requires a hotfix per the following: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818528/ The Windows 2000 network redirector maintains the data structures per computer, and therefore if two users on the same terminal server access the same file over the network, they share the same data structures internally. When the first user closes the file, the redirector also closes the file for …

We have a server that already has Oracle 9i installed and works fine. When attempting to install the 10G client on the same box, everything installs successfully, but when we launch SQL Plus, nothing comes up and a dr watson occurs. The sql plus for 9i works fine. Also, all other components for 10g appear to work fine. Can someone tell me if this is a compatibility issue, or just a configuration issue. Thanks in advance.

PsExec: How to specify session value for the '-i' option?
by Guest JonathanOrlev- 2 replies
Hello everybody, I have a question about the PsExec program, which I could not find answer to by searching Google. The question is about the '-i' command-line option: At PsExec's page (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ utilities/psexec.mspx), the '-i' option is described as: In the syntax: " [-i [session]] " And in the explanations: " Run the program so that it interacts with the desktop of the specified session on the remote system. If no session is specified the process runs in the console session. " So, my question is this: What is this session name? Is it a number? a string? What is it? I have Windows 2003 Server installed.…

How to create a USB Floppy Driver diskette ?
by Guest MJ- 1 reply
Since most new servers don't have an internal floppy drive, I bought an external floppy drive and attempted to do ASR Restore on a Windows 2003 Server (IBM x385) using Sony's External USB Floppy (MPF88E). I followed the instructions on how to create an ASR floopy from the ASR Backup. I booted the server with a Windows 2003 CD inserted, pressed F6 and F2 and everything seemed to be O.K. It asked me to insert the ASR floppy into the floppy drive (external USB Sony MPF88E floppy drive). Next, it asked me if I had additional storage drivers to add. If I just proceed without entering anything (i.e. Just carriage return), it starts initial Windows setup…

Backup Application Recommendation
by Guest Absolutely- 7 replies

Anyone have a recommendation for a reliable backup to tape application that's simple for end users to maintain? I've been using NovaSTOR products for some of my customers and the later versions of NovaBACKUP and NovaNET have been horribly unreliable and finicky, especially for restores. I know BackupExec and Arcserve are used heavily, but they tend to be a little complicated for the average end user.

Hi All I am having a bit of a problem identifying our server edition, I hope you can help. We have a HP MSA20 NAS 2000 box attached to a DL380 server (with a HP Storage Server sticker on it). The problem is when I go to system-->properties it says "Windows Server 2003 standard edition" but on the windows logo screen saver it says "Windows Server 2003 Applicance edition" We are looking to move our Exchange DB onto the NAS box but it needs to be the Storage Server edition and have the windows storage feature pack installed (which I assume can only be installed on Windows Storage Server edition?) Appreciate any help gerryR

Server 2008 Beta 3 is CRAP
by Guest Steve-UK- 2 replies

Yeah, I know this is the 2003 Server newsgroup but there doesn't seem to be a specific one for 2008 yet that I can find. This Beta is totally rubbish. I mean it is appallingly bad. I don't expect Betas to work 100% but I expect them to actually do something useful, otherwise why bother with them? First clue this thing might not be of any practical use was the build number: 6001 - isn't that just one along from the Vista RTM? I booted it up, and was presented with Server Manager, which is an integrated MMC for common management tasks. I clicked on "Add Features" and added in what I thought were some fairly innocuous features, consisting of the "De…

Disk group has no valid configuration copies
by Guest George Volis- 0 replies

I realise that this is aServer 2003 forum, whereas my problem is with a Windows 2000 Server, but it may be related. My server is Dell poweredge 2400 with a PERC 2/si Raid controller. I have for raid 1 containers (mirrored) which are all ok. On a restart of the system, two of my " dynamic sets" have come up with offline. When I try and reactivate the disks the message reads "Internal Error: Disk group has no valid configuration copies" I have used various file utilities like file scavenger and can see the contents of those drives. Is there a way to reconstruct disk configuration of those dynamic disks. Any assistance would be grateful Rega…

Disk Bad block. Raid 5
by Guest Barry- 2 replies
Greetings all, I have a customer that has a Win2003 Terminal Server that has a MegaRaid SATA card with 3 drives for Raid 5. The system event reports an event 7, device\harddisk1 has a bad block. Errors are logged mostly when I try open the computer management ( which does not open), or reboot the server. Its obvious I gave a disk problem. Going to the raid controller shows the disk all online. How do I locate the faulty disk, or at least repair the disk. I thought of running CHKdsk, bit heard of some possible problems. This is a heavily used server and critical to the customer. An ideas? Thanks in advance. Barry

Whenever I start this Windows 2003 Server, the RPC Security Service fails to start. Does anybody know what could cause this? What does this service do, and could be the consequences of this service not running? Is the server vulnerable without it? What steps could I take to make sure it does run? Thanks
