Backups cause server to freeze
by Guest lineone- 2 replies

I have a 2003 server. I can backup anything locally e.g. from one directory of the server to another using robocopy or NT backup. However when I try to back up to either a USB drive on the server with Robocopy or NT backup or using Veritas onto a tape drive on the server or NT backup or Robocopy to a remote computer, the backup fails and all users on the network can't log in. The server is still functional other than it can't see the rest of the network.

Server 2003 - web edition

Hi, We have some old NT boxes which we are looking to replace with new servers and would like to update the OS to something more recent. Is there a Server 2003 equivalent of Windows NT workstation? For the applications these servers will be running there is no need for Terminal Server, Domains, Active Directory, IIS etc. Basically I just want a rock solid OS to run our applications on, the alternative being XP. In order to save costs, do you think that the Windows Server 2003 Web Edition would work? Thanks for you help

by Guest Scotty213- 8 replies

Hey everyone, Just a quick question. Is it possible to have multiple domains configured on 1 computer? Specifically we want to have a new domain and exchange email services installed on a computer already running an exisiting domain/exchange server. Does anyone have a link for a walk thru or is the process the same as setting up the original? Also can we use the same Static IP for the 2nd domain/exchange server? Thanks in advance! -Scott

2k3 server in NT4 domain
by Guest mwheat- 1 reply
We have a manufacturing facility that needs to stay running for another 6 to 12 months so upgrading and new hardware is going to be a hard sell with management. There is an NT4 domain that contains a 2003 server and about 15 XP Pro workstations. The 2k3 server keeps losing it's ability to authenticate to the NT4 DCs. The server gets rebooted and works well for another day or two. But will then start to have problems authenticating users for SQL from the NT4 domain. There are local DNS servers, but no active WINS. There is a 2003 AD domain for other functions in the facility, but those systems are unaffected. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated…

I have a domain controller IP 192.168.1.2 I now try to set up an exchange server on another server 192.168.1.3 For some reason, the exchange server could not see my domain controller. "dcdiag.exe" gave the report below which I suspect is due to DNS configuration error. Any help or suggestion? (NB: my DNS server is also my domain controller and the forward looking zone is pointed towards my ISP's DNS server) Thanks. ===== dcdiag.exe report below ========================= Domain Controller Diagnosis Performing initial setup: *** Warning: could not confirm the identity of this server in the directory versus the names returned by DNS servers. …

boot.ini file missing - how do I recreate it?
by Guest David B- 10 replies

When investigating our inability to boot from a mirrored system volume, it came to light that our Server 2003 system did not have a boot.ini file. Going through Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup & Recovery > Settings, I am being given the option of writing a boot.ini file, but fear it is beyond my abilities. Is this a very complex file, or can I realistically create one - any advice would be gratefully received!

by Guest Johan- 3 replies

Good day In server 2003 I am trying to copy 20gb+ data to a share on another server 2003. After copying, I want to delete the files from the source to free up space on the first server 2003. When I start copying I get the error "Cannot remove folder xxx: The file name or extension is too long". ["xxx" above is a name that keeps changing depending what I am trying to copy...] - How do I get these files copied? - Should I change filenames? We are talking of 1000's of files ad folders. - Trying subfolders a little deeper don't work either. I also tried google search for solutions, utils such as xxcopy and xcopy which didn't work. Can you ple…

Good day, I originally posted the message below in another forum; can anyone throw some light on my problem? Cheers! Exchange Missing Emails
by Guest rrmiles@gmail.com- 1 reply

I have an Windows 2003 SBS server using the exchange pop3 connector. It has been up and working and successfully delivering emails for over a year now. I am having a situation where we lost power and the UPS shut down the server. When it came back up, we didn't get any incoming emails for several hours. When we finally noticed it, we checked the ISP web mail and found the pop3 connector is pulling them. A reboot of the server fixes the problem, but the emails that were already pulled has disappeared. This has happened 3 times now. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Hello. I have a file that is accessible to everyone in the department (they are all members of the same security group). One lead member of the group, however, needs to be able to modify the file, and everyone else in the group needs to simply read the file. The layout is as follows: Root Folder - (Dept Group Has Modify Perm.) |_ Tracking Folder - (Lead Staff Has Modify; Dept Group has Read/ Exec/List - NOT Inherited) |_ Tracking FILE - (Lead Staff Has Full Control; Dept Group has Read/Exec - NOT Inherited) Something is wrong, however, because everyone in the department group can still modify the file. How can I do this? Any hel…

I have a windows 2003 64 Bit Evaluation Server installed running SQL2005 for a specific application. We were forced to upgrade immediately from 32bit due to a requirement from our outside vendor. We used the Evaluation version until our VLK key came in. We now have the VLK and would like to upgrade the license. How do I do this without screwing up the SQL 2005 install which is running our application? Thank you! Fred
