Cannot install programs on win 2003 standard server

Just upgraded my server to 2003. All has gone well but I'm having trouble insstalling programs. Two examples are pcanyware (11.5) and AVG file server edition. AVG gets as far as asking what version you want installing, there is a pop up window that appears for about half a second (don't know what it says as there isn't time to read it) and then nothing happens. PCanywhere starts installation then rolls back saying that setup was interuppted. I've enabled active content from cds and tried turning off the web Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (first off completely then just off for the administrator group) but this just stopped ie bro…

Profiles
by Guest TSAM- 1 reply

Hello, I have Windows 2003 domain with mixed clients like Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. We use roaming profiles and this network share is configured on a Windows 2003 Server. For example, when we create a user account in the profiles tab we specify [ \\FileServer\profiles\user] as the path. It works as expected with Windows 2000 and Windows XP clients. With Vista, it appears to be working but we have seen cases where Vista clients cannot load profiles from this network share. Please find my queries: 1. It appears Vista creates a profile automatically with .V2 extention. Is it recommended or required to manually create this folder …

Hi After installing Win2008 DC+DNS+DHCP I check by the clients (WinXP) that they got the right settings. I noticed that they get (via DHCP server) under DNS Suffix Search List mydomain.local twice ??? It's like DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : mydomain.local mydomain.local Also under Node Type there is Unknown? (instead of Hybrid) Where can these two settings be changed so that users will get correct settings? Regards,Miha

w2k3 Enterprise Edition sp2 printing and snmp enabled
by Guest nick- 3 replies

After installing a new (print)server with Windows 2003 server (Enterprise Edition R2) with sp2 we observe the next problem. When sp2 is installed a number of printer queues got the status ‘offline’, and the printjobs are no longer processed. When however snmp on the standard tcp-ip port is gedisabled the print queue gets the status online again, and it works fine. The printjobs are printed again. I’ve searched through the knowledge base, but no real solution for this found. I also searched on the Internet but found no useful result for us, they all advice to disable snmp on the tcp-ip port. To disable snmp on tcp-ip ports on our infrastructure is no option…

HyperV Options
by Guest Geoff Schaller- 0 replies

I am after some general ideas here. We've set up a standard EBS environment with 3 boxes: management server, messaging and security server. Cool. Then we thought we would like a Terminal server and seeing that the management server box had 8GB of RAM, why not play around with virtualisation and put the TS in a VM rather than as a direct role on the management server. A few people think I am wasting my time so I am after some general opinion or experiences please on which option you might think is best: 1. Just put the TS role on the management server anyway. No HyperV. 2. Load the HyperV role onto the management server …

Does anyone know of a way to limit the size of a directory? I don't mean give an individual user a limit on a directory, I mean give a directory a limit regardless of who writes anything to that directory. TIA for any ideas.

Does Windows Server 2008 support dual monitors? It doesn't seem to recognize the hardware. The dual boot Windows XP does (and works properly). I hope to be able to use Hyper-V to create multiple development environments. Thanks, Matt.

MS Word crashes when loading with default network printer
by Guest Scott S.- 4 replies

I have a Win2k3 server (not R2 but current on all SPs) that is a print server. It holds the print queue for a Dell 3110cn printer. All was well until we got 2 new laptops with Vista. Once they were pointed at that printer as their default printer MS Word 2007 started crashing when you launch it. Dell ships a single install package for the printer for XP,Win2k3, and Vista. I installed the latest on the server and could see the new driver version, but the Vista laptops still crash Word unless I set them to use the Microsoft XPS Document printer driver. Then it loads, but of course you can't print. I've browsed the Dell driver package and it appears that the…

Limited User Printer Issue
by Guest AJ- 9 replies

I'm new to this company and have only a decent IT skill set, so I'll explain this the best as I can. I've configured three new laptops, one for myself and two for other users in the company. I have administrator privileges. I installed two network printers on their computer and test printed successfully. Once the laptops were passed to the users, they could also print successfully, that day. When they log off then back on (presumably at day's end then the next morning) they cannot print. I can log on/off from my new laptop and never have printing issues. Seems very likely to be a permission issue somewhere. They *can* access the printers propertie…

Re: XCOPY Insufficient system resources problem.

Re: XCOPY Insufficient system resources problem. I also am having this problem when trying to copy files using the Windows Explorer. Both systems (target and source) are Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. If I try and "push" files at the target, I get this error message: "Cannot copy <filename>: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." If I try and "pull" the files from the source, I get this error message: "Cannot copy <filename>: Not enough server storage space is available to process this command." I've searched the knowledgebase for both error messages and found solutions to either ancient NT products, some 20…

I've extended my desktop to a second monitor. I prefer the monitor to be positioned left of my laptop. Thanks, AJ

system freeze very often
by Guest lenny- 14 replies

Hi, Over the last few weeks the system (Dell PowerEdge SC440 Windows Server 2003 for small business server- out of warranty by 3 months!) has started to freeze. The screen freezes with no mouse movement or keyboard input registered. It started just every few days then sometimes twice a day then every few days then once a day and today every 10 minutes or so. I have changed the RAM (After the Health Monitor showed an error with the RAM) and also the LAN card (there wasn't any errors but I thought I should try it) but although they seemed to make a difference it was a red herring and now it is as bad as ever. There are no errors in the log files except …

Gurus, What is your position on remotely installing software via RDP/Terminal Services? In other words, sitting at your desk somewhere, logging into a remote server using the Remote Desktop protocol, and installing software. I believe ""shadow key corruption" could occur in this manner and advise against it. I am looking for other thoughts however. -- Spin

After initial boot of the server (factory install) the server was joined to the 2003 AD domain. Prior to rebooting I noticed that I was unable to make any configuration changes to the Firewall i.e. add exceptions. Upon rebooting the firewall service was not running and when I tried to restart it, received a message saying that one of it's dependant services (BFE) was not started. Starting the BFE resulted in an error 5: Access is denied. This occurred in both local and domain admin accounts. Moving the server to a seperate OU that denies all GPOs resulted in the same issues as did a gpupdate/reboot. Setting BFE to run as the domain admin resulted in …

Restricted Groups / Local Administrators
by Guest Russella- 1 reply

I've looked up and followed all the directions I could find on this topic, but I'm still having problems. I simply want to add a select group of users, primarily consultants, to the local administrators group - this allows them to fiddle with their software, but I want their server access to be restricted. I created a domain group, added them to it, then added this group to Restricted Groups and then added "Administrators" to "this group is a member of". I also tried it by adding users to the upper section. In the main, it worked, however it kept adding either the group or users that I had added to the Restricted Groups, into the domain administrators…

Windows Equivalent to /sbin/nologin

Hello, I have created AD accounts for some services running on multiple servers. I would like to secure those accounts by making it so that the service account could not be used to login to a system locally (i.e. at the console). In RedHat I can accomplish this by giving the account the /sbin/nologin shell as their default shell. How do I accomplish the same in Windows. Thank you, Bill
