Server 2003 R2 SP2 and WMP 10
by Guest reswob- 0 replies
Hi, I have a question. I did a vulnerability scan on an 2003 server and one of the findings relates to WMP 10, issues detailed in KB941569 and KB944275. Attempts to patch the server using either of those patches results in a box saying "The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install". Attempts to upgrade to WMP 11 get me a box saying WMP 11 is only for XP. WMP 10 is NOT listed in add/remove programs even with 'show updates' clicked nor could I find it in "add/remove Windows Components". This server will not be allowed on the network with this finding unpatched as the finding is rated as 'HIGH'. Does anyo…

WSUS Duplicate Issue
by Guest admintgal- 0 replies

I'm not sure if there are any WSUS experts out there, but I'll give it a shot. We are running WSUS 2.0 and we are running into a situation where duplicate machines are being created the WSUS admin consoles. I've been consistently reading that this is due to the susclientID registry key and imaging. I guess I just don't understand how this is issued or whatever, but could someone explain to me the process of communication between a client and WSUS and how this ID is issued, and how duplicates could possibly occur? Thanks in advance.

RSOP vs GPEDIT ???
by Guest JN3- 0 replies

Studying for MCSE...need help with this one. OK Local GP's applied then SDOU...got it. RSOP... Resultant set... Now if Local GPO is applied, and clearly it is, why doesn't RSOP show the effects of the Local GP? Symptom: e.g. I assing an IPSEC policy on a server locally. GPEDIT shows it's there, IpSecMon shows its there, the policy is working according to network access tests. But using RSOP...no IPSEC policies to be found. Doesn't seem to be well documented... but RSOP apparently does not show the effects of the local GPO. Why not? This would seem to be useful info in the RSOP info, no? I'm only getting domain-based GP info in my RSOP display. T…

I notice some post on partitioning the hard drive for Active Dirtory as follows:- With 2 Hard Disks, that is pretty much your only option, but things can be partitioned like this: 6GB C OS 1024b sectors 1GB D Swap 64kb sectors 2GB E NTDS 64kb sectors 2GB F NTDSlog 64kb sectors 2GB G Sysvol 512b sectors 6GB H Logs + Backup 64kb sectors 1GB Free Space http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.win2000.active_directory/browse_thread/thread/85edf933ad940a85/5e78caeeb93e50ec?hl=en&lnk=st&q=partitions+active+directory+os&rnum=5#5e78caeeb93e50ec How are the sectors sizes determined for optimum performance? Perfmon: Can local, can't remotely
by Guest Tim Hollingworth- 0 replies

We are a member of the local admins group and no group policies or local security policies restrict running perfmon. We can add counters when logged on to the console but not when adding counters from a remote workstation or servers. We can open an MMC and manage the machine remotely. We can open a remote registry connection and run WMI scripts from a remote machine. Just can't add counters from a remote machine. We can run perfmon against all other machines on the network from any client but just not this one. When we type \\machinename and click an object or counter, it just hourglasses. Thoughts? Terminal Services 2003 SPLA token question
by Guest Stewart- 0 replies

I have posted to the Terminal Services subgroup, but need to get an answer as soon as possible to my question. I have set up Terminal Servers before, activated the license server, and installed TS CALs, but this is a new one for me. I have need for a server to be setup for clients and I have signed an SPLA license agreement with Microsoft. I have installed Windows and am ready to configure Terminal Server, but need to make sure my tokens will never expire since I will be paying for them on a monthly basis through my SPLA licensing program. I've configured the Windows Server to be Per User, and will be setting licensing as Per User with the Terminal Server L…

Moving CA questions

Good afternoon, We have a Enterprise Root CA setup on a domain member server (Windows server 2003 R2) and no subordinate at this point. This server hosts our Exchange 2003 server. I'm not super familiar with Certificate servers, but shouldn't this should have been setup on a domain controller? I discovered this because our DCs are giving error messages about KDC certificate is now invalid (see below for the full message). I don't want to effect the certificates that are already distributed. Any suggestions? **************************************** Event Type: Warning Event Source: KDC Event Category: None Event ID: 20 Date: 8/15/2008 T…

I have purchase a new computer and it running Windows Vista ultimate. I have added the Vista machine to the domain and have noticed that user profiles are not loading to the Vista work station. Mixing Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 with x86
by Guest guillaume.leonard- 0 replies

Greetings, in our company, we have an Active Directory on Windows 2003 Server. Here's what it looks like for now : Two (2) Domain Controllers : Windows 2003 Server x86 (NOT R2) Active Directory Schema : Windows 2003 Server x86 R2 We had a 2003 R2 Domain Controller (DC) before, this is why our AD Schema is now on R2. What we want to do now, is add a new DC to the Domain. This DC will be on Windows 2003 Server x64 R2. This is where I have to ask some questions : Is there any known incompatibility with x64 R2 and x86 NON-R2 ? Except the bug in KB919151 of Microsoft, which is "Cannot deplay a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Edition-Based domain controller in a Wi…

folder redirection

Question on folder redirection. Under the domain gpo we have my documents to be redirected to the users home directory. I was trying to create a folder redirection gpo in a test environment and it always gives me an access denied message. It doesn't give me the message if I do it on the same gpo as the mydocs redirection. Is there a reason I can't do this?? I am logged in as the domain admin on a single domain organization.

Restrict printing to black and white only
by Guest myfaux@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hi, I have one printer shared from Windows 2003 server. I would like to restrict certain users from being able to go in change the printing preferences to print in color. I have the everyone group in the security tab of the printer and it has only print checked off not manage documents or manage printers. When logging in as a user i can modify the printing preferences to whatever I want. I thought this would be greyed for users unless they had rights above just print. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

File Server Migration Tool share name overlapping issue
by Guest study- 0 replies
Hello all, We have a mix of NT4/2003 File Servers that need to be migrated/consolidated to a single 2003 file server in an NT4 domain environment. The issue we've noticed is that because our current file servers all have \\servername\profiles$ share and thus, the sharename profiles$ overlap with one another so FSMT complains about it during the copy phase. ex) \\server1\profiles$, \\server2\profiles$, and \\server3\profiles$, when trying to copy the data using FSMT to the to-be new 2003 file server: to target share: e\profiles$ target location: e\profiles it errors out due to the overlap in share name. Is there a work around for this? We don't inte…

Hello everyone, I have currently several W2K8 RC but Im not quite sure when these beta versions are expiring? The last time I tracked the status of that I was aware that the period was extended from March-30 to June-30. On the "winver" option it says that it expires on April 7, why is that? Can anyone confirm the exact date? Cheers -- augusto alvarez | it pro | southworks http://staff.southworks.net/aalvarez

Suddenly sluggish
by Guest JimG- 0 replies

My home desktop (2ghz Core Duo, 1gb ram) runs 2003 Server (mainly so I can use TS when traveling). It's a recent re-install of Standard Edition Sp2 and was working great. Suddenly (I'm sure I had something to do with it), certain functions have become very slow. Several examples: Invoking IE6 displays a partially built window for 15 seconds before loading my home page. It's a lattice-work of blue lines with the previous screen contents showing through during the pause. Invoking Eudora7 takes about the same time. Most other applications start up immediately. One peculiar one is that if I cut/paste between applications, the paste takes the same…

SNMP request not working
by Guest seanmig- 0 replies

Hi, We are using Dell IT assistant application to monitor or Dell servers with Windows 2003 installed via SNMP. Dell IT assistant can detect and monitor all Dell servers in our networks except for one Windows 2003 SP1 server. SNMP service is starting on that server. Restarting SNMP service and the server itself won't work. SNMP configuration on that server is exactly the same as the others so that shouldn't be the problem. Very unlikely that the problem is with Dell IT assistant since all other server can be detected. Any suggestion on how to fix this problem. I prefer not to install/reinstall SNMP yet. I would rather just replaced the SNMP …

DHCP "DNS Domain Name" Option format
by Guest computerbobster@gmail.com- 0 replies
- 131 views
I've recently been assigned to a company that has several domains. In the DCHP scope, the "DNS Domain Name" option is set with the domain name that the workstations and users reside in along with the parent domain with a semi-colon separating them. I cannot find anywhere any documentation to say that this is OK. That it's ok to have 2 domain names listed, and what seperator to use is hard to determine. The format looks like this: child.domain.net;domain.net Is this right? Can someone point me to some KB article that says this is right?

Hello, I am having major issues with my IIS and SMTP services. IIS We are running Windows 2003 Server with SP2 and Exchange Server 2003. Exchange is just running on our internal network and not used for external email. The server runs great until I start the SMTP services. Then the CPU usage bounces around from 5 to 99 percent and the memory usage goes through the roof, which bogs down the rest of the server. It won't let me stop the SMTP service and I end up rebooting the server and setting the SMTP service to manual so that it will stop. We have all Windows updates run and Antivirus updated and scanned. Any help you could provide will be greatl…
