Why do clents and my new E2k3 server that exists in the root forestmake requests to child dc's over TCP 3268, 389, & 88?
by Guest 05hammer- 1 reply

Why do clents and my new E2k3 server that exists in the root forestmake requests to child dc's over TCP 3268, 389, & 88? I have a root domain 'parent.com'. I have a child domain 'child.parent.com'. Lately I've been noticing on my router syslogs that some of my XP clients on parent.com have been hitting the child ADC over tcp 389 and 88. Also, a new E2k3 server I built on parent.com last week is hitting/receiving traffic over tcp 3268 & 389 to/from the child ADC. Shouldn't this traffic be directed to the parent.com ADC/GC? I've also noticed that the E2k3 server is sending Echo requests to the child ADC about every 10 mins. I've checked my 2 parent…

time service mystery
by Guest Blake- 0 replies

I have the time service set on my PDC emulator to point to a router here on the network via http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816043. I can confirm this router is responding to NTP. I run w32tm /resync from a prompt and the clock sets itself correctly. About 3 seconds later, it changes to a time that is about 1.5 minutes off (slow, in this case). It is a consistent behavior. Hello, We want to test a new database application on our LAN using a Win2003 server. The idea is to simulate normal use, and then heavier-than-normal use and (if possible) to get a report of what happened during the to see if the machine can manage the load increase. Are there any tools on a Win 2003 server to get such an report? Are there any freeware tools, which allow such monitoring? Thanks in advance Roger T.

Tips on reducing profile sizes automatically...
by Guest Jake- 1 reply
Hi, Some of my users are plagued with huge profile sizes which takes a lot of time for logging on/off. Does it exist an elegant way to find out which folders are actually pulled and pushed at logon / logoff? From this collection of folders I could list the biggest files from 'temp' and 'download' folders and give the users the opportunity to manually delete unnecessary files. Thanks for tips on this rgds jake

Hi, Does anyone know of an application (.net if possible) that is specifically designed to be a reporting application for Perfmon counters? I've been importing the counters into Excel and creating graphs from there but ideally i'd like something more powerful and designed for the purpose. thanks, Ian.

Operating System Chip

I think it is a good idea to develop operating system on the electronic chip this idea will - solve historical error in building the PC computer and it will Limit the illegal copying of the operating system . - reduce the danger of viruses that strike operating systems and reduce the time needed to load the operating system . To clarify my idea in detail We should take these things in mind - operating system is part from computer - We can divide the operating system (the basics of data, identification data and update information) - There is no important reason to booting computer from Hard Disk. Now what are the new idea ? - Id…

Dumb Server 2003 licensing question
by Guest chaucer- 1 reply

I have tried reading the Microsoft licensing agreements and have found many parts of them to be opaque. Hence my post here. I have a simple question: if I decide to set up a redundant domain controller (Dell Poweredge) running Server 2003 Standard, am I required to purchase another complete set of CALS? I have 30 user CALS on the first server. The second server will be in the same domain serving the same people. I have searched Microsoft's site with no luck. -Thanks. Patrick

Windows Home Server Connector Client Crash

Please forgive the posting here - there seems not to be a Windows Home Server group. Could someone help me with some ideas of what to check? I'm running Windows Home Server (OEM edition) an on older system that was used for all phases of the beta testing with no problem. The OEM version was installed and all connector software updated on 5 systems - all okay for a month. Yesterday there was a power outage and although the server is on a UPS it reported one of 3 external drives was bad. That was cleared but the server constantly reported that the backup service was not running so I wiped the drives and re-installed the home server software including …

windows 2008 server
by Guest colleen- 1 reply

I have a windows 2008 server and it intermittently loses connection. I have 2 NIC cards in it. I have disabled one nic card. I have noticed that if I changed netbt to restart on all errors, it seems to help. Most of the time when this happens, the only way to get connectivity back to it is to restart the server. I have had to restart the server during the day and there are at least 25 users attached to it at the time. Any suggestions would be helpful.

"My Documents" is then redirected to the H:\ For some reason, our Notebook users who opperate frequently offline (no network connection) have noted that when they try to install software or view pdf's, the opperation will fail because the H: drive is not available offline. Has anyone experienced this situation and could possibly point me to a solution?

WDS configuration error after risetup
by Guest mu1980- 0 replies
I have an external hard drive plugged into our WDS server, formatted NTFS, and the risetup process worked flawlessly, copying all the info from the XP cd. Now, when I want to configure WDS, I get a "the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect" error when I click Next on the Remote Installation Folder section of configuring WDS. It correctly lists the drive letter and path to the remote install folder created during risetup. I can access the drive, etc. from outside of WDS config, but the program seems to have a problem with it. What's up with this? Any ideas? Thanks :)

Hey all, We are running Windows 2003 domain, Windows XP and some Vista clients and We are expirencing an authentication problem with clients who uses the SecureRemote client (NGX) from the Internet. The remote computers sometimes are domain members and some are in workgroup. When we change the password to a AD username and the remote user tries to use CIFS, SMTP or any other network service which requires Kerberos or NTLM authentication - it failes. The user recieves errors messages in the eventlog "No authentication protocol was available" and some other related authentication events. This is sometimes caused by invalid cached credentials. Because the…

I have a one way outgoing trust and I only get this error when using an account from the trusted domain. Someties it works, other times I have to try to login a few times. Hello there, How can I check if there is a policy that removes the local admin privileges of the AD user that logs on to the AD domain? Some users might need local admin privileges for some applications to work properly. Also, can I enable some local computer policy on the user XP machine to override the above? I have an AD domain with multiple sites and OUs. Thanks, T

Migrate Creation Date only attribute
by Guest jimmy stelle- 0 replies

I have a problem. I migrated a large number of files and did not set the preserve timestamp setting in the utility I used and now, after a couple of weeks in production, we have an application problem. Is there a CLI utility where I can copy just the creation date from a source file to a destination file without changing any other atribute, or the data it self? We still have the source data intact. I know I can use Robocopy to copy the timestamp, but we want to preseve the new destination 'modify date', and only change the creation date. Thanks,

Cannot find NETWOK SERVICE Account
by Guest ThatsIT.net.au- 0 replies

I recently promoted a Windows 2003 server to be a backup domain controller in a windows 2000 domain. After that I could not find the NT Authority\Network Service Account. Is this expected behavior? Is there any way of recreating this account? I was under the impression that the Network Service account was not a account of the domain controller and only a account of member servers, but I also read that I need to give it permissions to run IIS on a domain controller.

staged backup - File replication
by Guest gjb- 0 replies

Hi, I am looking for some advice/pointers for replacing our current HSM backup regime based on legato diskextender. Currently we have sans or attached storage arrays (approx 4TB-6TB) attached to a W2K3 cluster. The files get moved to near-line UDO WORM in a Plasmon jukebox via diskextender. We aim to replace this with a new backup/archive paradigm consisting of a second RAID/NAS for initial file moves and then to backup the NAS to tape library for off-line archive/storage. This way we 2 raid copies "on-line" and an off-line backup. The problem I am facing is the best way to perform the file moves from the live RAID to the backup NAS.(on a limited budget…

by Guest Metlmrk- 1 reply

I have just installed POP3 on a stand alone web server(not a domain controller/no AD). To test it. I made a domain on the pop3 virtual server "testdomain" one mailbox "testuser" the password is "password" and had the system automatically create an associated user. Now when I configure outlook and press test the settings it finds the smtp server and the pop3 server and sends a test e-mail I then get a "Network logon" box from "testdomain" but it will not accept the "testuser" and "password" ? and wont allow me to log on. Everythong else appears to work properly. the mailbox recieves the test e-mail but I cannot retrieve it. I would appreciate any help…

Virtual Server RC2 Commit States Help
by Guest Vishal- 0 replies

Hi, I am a bit confused with the options presented by VS RC2. I have gone to http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/31553cbc-e514-448e-8548-73ef2142bb811033.mspx?mfr=true and still a bit confused as to which option I should use. We have some "live" data that I dont want to lose. Right know the option that is selected is: Shuts down the guest operating system and merges the undo disk with the parent disk. Which one is the right one - as before we didnt 'enable undo disks'. What I want is for it to commit all changes made to the parent vhd file. [so all data is then safe]. thanks
