LSASRV Event 40960 and Failure Audit Event 673 since Feb 2007
by Guest Drew Govnyak- 1 reply

We are in the single forest native 2003 domain. 2 Domain Controllers 30 member servers. All 2003 Servers (members and dcs) have SP2 applied. Network has been up for the past 5 years. Since Feb 20th of this year. All of the 2003 member servers started Logging Warning Event ID: 40960 from LSASRV at random days and times, but not frequently. The message logged is deceiving, it talks about time being different on one of the servers. (See below) The max time difference on my servers is 0.005ms (obtained form w32time /monitor), all servers except the PDC Emulator are configured to use Nt5DS under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\P…

Restored Files Created as SIS Links
by Guest Will- 0 replies

This is a new one for me: on a Windows 2003 server, some files are being restored / migrated from another server. The files are being created by Windows Backup (in restore mode) as "SIS Links". There is some hidden folder in the root that apparently contains the actual files, and I guess the files on the NTFS file system are simply hard links to those files? What the heck is this SIS feature? I'm never experienced such a thing in using hundreds of W2K and W2K3 systems, doing many thousands of backups and restores. Is this a side effect of some option on the restore? In Windows itself, is there some registry option, or UI, that controls whether …

Creating TXTSETUP.OEM
by Guest Will- 4 replies
Many of the Compaq / HP Windows 2000 driver downloads only contain .CAT, ..INF, and .SYS files needed to install new devices under Windows. What's lacking is a TXTSETUP.OEM file, which is used at minimum with the Windows 2000 install CD when you need to add a new device while installing. Is there a trick to creating the TXTSETUP.OEM file when it is not provided by the vendor? -- Will

Cannot find existing registry key

We a Windows 2003 native domain, and want to set the timeserver to NIST. However, when we go to Hkey_local_machine\system \currentcontrolset\services\w32time\parameters to set the TYPE dword key: We cannot find it (As local admin, or domain admin). If we try to create the key, we get a message that the key allready exists - but we do not see it in regedt32 although we have the ownership of the w32time & subkeys/values Has anyone heard of not being able to view existing keys that they (theoretically) have rights to see? Thanks

We use to be a Novell network for years and years. For the past 5 years we were running 70 stations on Windows 2000 Pro with no issues. In March we switched over to a Windows 2003 server network. Our main DC we installed 64bit Windows 2003 SP2. All the stations stayed unchanged other than we had to create new profiles on the domain. All the stations ran fine for weeks then about a month after the switch over we had a handful of stations when the user's logged on a new profile was automatically created for them. When the server switch- over was done the new user profiles were all "U_Username", they did not show up as the usual "U_Username.domainname". When t…

Certificate Authority
by Guest Roberto- 1 reply

How do I do that? Thanks ===================================================== Hi Roberto: This is very complex: you need to ask the question again in the Windows Server 2003 newsgroup. Or rather: the explanation is very complex, the "principle" is quite simple... :-) You need to install the Verisign certificate as your Master Certificate. You then get each client to delete their existing certificate and go through the process of requesting a new certificate. This time, they will get a "Child" certificate of the Verisign certificate. Any outside authentication can then follow the chain of trust all the way back to Verisign, and will thus accept…

I'm running low on disk space on my C: drive which I typically reserve for the OS only. This server is our terminal server, and twice we've been below 200MB available. Do you know what the directory 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3' is and why it's so big? My other servers have the same directory, but it's less than 300MB. Thanks!

Hello, I am trying to do an integrated installation of Windows 2003 Enterprice with SP2. I can install fine the operating system using CD1 with SP2 integrated into it. After a fresh install using this cd the computer starts with SP2 already intalled. The problem is that when I try to run CD2, with SP2, I got an error that reads: "Setup cannot continue because the operating system edition is different from the Setup edition." If I use the original CD2, without SP2, I get: "Setup cannot continue because this product disk is incompatible with the service pack installed on this computer. Peach Tree 2007 Server components?
by Guest Leythos- 1 reply

I have a server and although it's new and running all the same apps as the old server (Swing Migration), the new server is running PeachTree 2007 Server components. The server will hang a couple times a week without any warning and no log entries - can't get past Applying settings and most times the screen just freezes. I disabled the PT 2007 Pervasive Database service and didn't have any problems for several days, but, within 4 hours of enabling it, it hung the server again. Anyone running Peach Tree 2007 on a Windows 2003 Standard R2 server with SP2 installed? -- Leythos - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal al…

rendom /list and domainlist.xml
by Guest Jake- 2 replies

Hi, I'm in the process of renaming a domain from mydomain to mydomain.local. When I do a rendom /list I see that domainlist.xml's NetBIOS names are empty, except for the last record (ForestRoot) where I find: DNSName=mydomain and NetBIOSname=MYDOMAIN In my case, should I fill in NetBIOSname=MYDOMAIN in all four records and change the other fields from mydomain to mydomain.local? Thanks a lot for comments on this. regards Jake

Troubleshooting SNMP

I have two servers (Win2K3 SP1) identically configured for SNMP. They both have two different community strings. On one server an application is able to poll String A. On the other it can't. Checking the firewall the request passes towards the server but never comes back. From the firewall a test of String B works fine. We have double checked the community string is spelled correctly Netstat also confirms that port 161 is open. Nothing in the event logs. Is there anything else I can check to confirm the request is making it to the server and what happens inside? I was thinking netmon might show me the packets. Is there any value in recreating …

RIS to WIM (WDS) image conversion
by Guest szilagyic- 0 replies
Hello: We recently installed Win 2003 Server SP2 on a server that we primarily use for RIS. RIS was upgraded to WDS with SP2 according to the instructions released by Microsoft (http://technet2.microsoft.com/ WindowsVista/en/library/9e197135-6711-4c20-bfad-fc80fc2151301033.mspx? mfr=true). We have configured WDS exactly as this documentation describes. Microsoft failed to include any instructions on how to upgrade RIS images to WDS. After some reading we determined how to do this. Currently this is where we ran in to a roadblock. When we try to convert our old RIS images to WIM images, the process goes through until the very end of the progress bar, it s…

Manually removing a network adapter entry from the registry
by Guest medina- 0 replies

I've recently converted a physical windows 2003 box to a VM using VMware's ESX converter utility. So far, all is functioning the same on the Virtual server. The warning I experience is after I configure the IP address on the virtual NIC within the VM (matching that of the old physical server), a warning dialog box pops up stating that "There is another network card with the same address that is NO LONGER attached to the system.... there may be problems if both adapters become active." After clicking ok, all is functioning well and I have network connectivity. I would like to remove the old hardware NIC reference from the registry to avoid this message …
