Windows 200 Server & Logman.exe?
by Guest John Schneider- 0 replies

I have a batch file to start a specific set of performance counters that I'm using on some client's Windows 2003 Server systems. Just tried deploying this to a Windows 2000 Server enironment, and it can't find Logman.exe. Searching around, I found an article that says "Logman is a superset of the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit's Tracelog facilities", but I can't find it there either. Is this correct? Does Win2k even have logman?

2008 Server x64 Print Server Driver Support?
by Guest Usenet- 0 replies

I"m struggling to find a simple guide to what is required in terms of printer drivers if I wanted to have a Windows 2008 Server x64 act as a file and print server. My understanding is that the driver installed on the server *has* to be a Vista compatible WHQL x64 driver i.e. I couldn't use a Windows 2003 Server x64 driver regardless of whether it's WHQL or not? It's one of those small things that could put a seriously big dent in any plans to pilot 2008 server as we all know how far behind many printer manufacturers are in updating their drivers. Our clients are primarily 32 bit XP and Vista with some x64 XP. I'm reading the Microsoft Windows 2008 …

we always set our users my document folders to be redirected to a file server (in this case windows 2000 server) and their XP Pro PCs are set to use offline folders. so in theory when the server is unavailable they scan still work on their files. I use this all the time on my laptop so I can take it home and work on my files without having to dial in to work. well the file server crashed, and some users are getting an error when trying to access the files offline, they are getting "document name or path is not valid" they cannot sync with the server, since the server is dead. if you try to view their offline files by clicking on the icon, some users …

I have a couple of Windows 2003 Standard SP2 servers (Dell PE OEM) which I want to upgrade to R2 for the DFS-R feature, but I'm having a hard time finding a Windows 2003 Standard R2 upgrade to buy. It's not listed here either: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/pricing.mspx Is there not an upgrade option, and I just have to buy full versions? Thanks.

Windows 2008 Server, wmiprvse.exe taking up excessive CPU
by Guest Mike M- 1 reply

Win2008 server running in VMWare Workstation 6 with latest VMWare additions installed. Win2008 runs flawlessly in this configuration save for the wmiprvse.exe taking up 8-15% of the CPU. Turning off the Windows Management Instrumentation fixes the problem but is not ideal. Turning the WMI back on seems to "fix" the problem however the services "IP Helper" and "Windows Resource Manager" aren't automatically started when the WMI service is turned back on. Turning the IP Helper service back on has no ill effects on the CPU. But turning the Windows Resource Manager on brings the WMIPrvSe.EXE back to the top of the CPU's most used processes. Would lea…

I have a 2 node custered sql server 2005 and 2 web servers, all using windows 2003. The database servers are behind a firewall. I am using DTCPing to check if I am able to do DTC. I need to install .NET 2.0 on workstations in our Win2003 domain. We are not using WSUS. I downloaded the NET 2.0 redistributable package and extracted the netfx.msi pac. But the pac will not install using group policy. How can I get this done without visiting every workstation?-- ---------------------------------------------------- This mailbox protected from junk email by MailFrontier Desktop from MailFrontier, Inc. http://info.mailfrontier.com

Vmware product vs Virtual Server R2 sp1 (in hindsight of 2008hypervisor and VMM 2007)? I dont want to start any sort of flame wars here.. but looking for any technical info anyone can point me too.. perhaps benchmarks or independent reviews of each... We are starting to virtualize our servers.. some of them will be sql based.. ie: Dynamics 9.0/10.0, Systems Center Config Manager, Live Comm Server 2007 etc.. into 1 role per VS (which i believe is the general rule here).. The hardware is xeon 2.5 (dual cpu, quad cores).. with sata2 harddrive system (32mb cache drives, enterprise) with raid5 array and raid10 array. (for 40 users, usually 10 simulanteous sql…

Hello, We are trying to monitor whether or not processes are running on the windows 2003 servers that we have. I currently have an odd problem. When I do an snmpwalk (from a unix server running nagios) of the hrSWRunName OID, it is supposed to show me ALL of the running processes but it only shows about 12-15 of them and just like murphy's law, it doesnt show the processes that I need to monitor! Any suggestions? thanks

Hi there. A year ago or so we built this monster server for files with a RAID-5 array it has just about 3TB of disk in it total. I just noticed today in Disk Management that we actually only partitioned 2048GB of it (I guess the limit for a single filesystem?) and that there is almost a 900GB 'unallocated space' block sitting there unused. Windows will not allow me to create an additional partition in that 900GB space. Any advice? -Drew

How do I restrict settings on only 1 TS server?
by Guest Noob- 0 replies
I need to remove the ability to create VPN connections off of only 1 terminal server. I know that I can create a new OU and move the TS server to there. Create a new GPO and make the change to "Network/Network Connections" section and apply it to that OU. But this is a "User Configuration" and will not apply to that server because there is no users under that OU (correct me if I am wrong on that). I can't apply the new GPO to the users OU because they make other VPN connection. So, how do I remove the ability to create VPN connections off of 1 Terminal Server? I have looked under the Local Security Settings but I am not able to find anything there. …

PATH environment variable hosed, and all normal files need Administrator access (??!)
by Guest Jon Davis- 1 reply

Using Windows Server 2008 as a developer workstation, with all recent updates installed. If I open a command prompt (cmd.exe) as myself, the global PATH variable is populated. But it doesn't do much good because, as a developer and power user, I cannot do anything I'd normally do, like "defrag" because you must run cmd.exe as Administrator. If I open a command prompt "as Administrator", the global PATH variable is NOT populated; only my profile PATH that normally gets prepended to the global PATH is populated. I had to create a setpath.bat file and paste my global PATH variable. But that was a kludge and I'm finding normal, non-console apps not fu…

Initial creation and regen of mirror takes over a day
by Guest Jordan- 0 replies

I just added a mirrored stripe set on my Windows 2000 server (Raid 5+0). It is a device that allows two RAID 5 setups and I have each setup with 5 of the 500GB SATAII drives. Total for each RAID 5 array is 2TB usable. I set Windows 2000 Disk Manager to mirror those arrays. Yes, I know it is overkill but I have my reasons. Disk Manager has been showing the mirror "Resyncing" for over 12 hours and I think at this rate it looks like it has over 24 more hours left. Since these drives are all blank and the setup is new I thought the process would be very quick on the initial setup, but that does not seem to be the case. I don't think it is drive perfor…

I just discovered that I have a DNS name resolution issue on my network. When using remote desktop, I cannot connect via the remote client’s computer name, I can only connect via IP address. Which lead me to believe that it’s a DNS name resolution issue, the problem is that I have no clue on how to fix it. I am running Windows Sever 2003 SP3 with active directory and DNS.

64-bit for VM's?
by Guest soup_or_power@yahoo.com- 2 replies

We are going to host 3 VM's on a 64GB server. The host OS is going to be some version of Windows. Does it have to be a 64-bit OS like Win2k3? Also: if 64-bit Win2k3 is used as host, do the VM's have to be 64-bit OS as well? Is the RAM going to be partitioned into 2 GB for each VM? Thanks for your help.

Change WS2008 logon screen to 2003/XP style?
by Guest IT Guy- 1 reply

I absolutely *hate* the WS2008 logon screen for domain joined servers. It takes several clicks to logon, plus the available domains are not listed. I can't see how anyone in their right mind thought the change could be good. How can I revert the logon screen back to the 2003/XP style with the drop-down for the domains?

Mantatory Profile Woes
by Guest KWME- 1 reply

I'm running a Server 2003 network in a school setting where I'd like things to be pretty locked-down. I use both mandatory profiles and group policy to lock down user accounts. Lately I've had consistent errors when all users load the mandatory profile. The error message states that the profile is unavailable and that the error is that the system couldn't find the file specified. I've checked and rechecked the permissions on the share where the profile is located and they check-out. One thing I have noticed is that when I change the file name from ntuser.dat to ntuser.man the file type label doesn't change from "dat" to "man". It just stays on ".man"…
