I have a question. Assume I have a server that contains a folder with a domain account that allows read/execute/create privilages and NOT modify. Now, a user in that domain creates a file in the folder and, as the owner, has full privlages... will that user be able to modify the file?

Printmig problem
by Guest sarahseftel@gmail.com- 0 replies
- 210 views
Hi, I'm using the printmig (3.1) application in order to backup all of the printers in our printer cluster. The backup takes place every week with a script. In the pm.log of the printmig I see "2007:10:06 17:00:41 243 print queues enumerated", which are the exact number of printers that we have. I took the CAB file and used the restore option in the lab, in the pm.log I see "2007:10:08 15:29:01 172 print queues enumerated", so basically I have 71 printers missing... The printer cluster name in the lab is different than the one in the production environment, but as far as I know it does not matter since the printmig application is for migrations of this…

I have a client who is running a Windows 2000 DC inside their domain. They have decided to purchase a Windows 2003 Small Business Server to replace it. Is there a way or documentation on how to get this 2003 Small Business Server into the domain and then to DCPromo it to be the new DC and then to be able to just take the 2000 Server off of the domian?

I would like to ask for comments and known problems on the indexing service with Windows Server 2003. I am trying to find resolution to a problem I am having with accessing files from the server. When my users open windows explorer or/and the search to locate files on the server there is about an 5 to 8 second pause before it connects and starts searching or displaying files. After the pause it seems fine. I would love it if I could gets results instantly when searching for files and even when clicking on a mapped network drive. Thank you, Tracey

This weekend I installed Windows server 2003 on a clean machine with no other data on the drives. After the installation I turned on the external firewire drive I plan to use for backups and allowed the drivers to install normally. Over the last few days I've had some problems with the external drive and my backup software and went to format the drive to try to start over. It was at this point that I noticed under the Disk Manager that while my internal C: is listed as (Boot), the external E: is shown as (System). Well no wonder I can't format it... How did my external drive wind up as the system volume, and how can I move this back to C: where it belong…

Searching the Directory for Shared Printers
by Guest James U- 0 replies
I tried to add network a printers to a workstation by clicking Start > Search > Find Printers and then clicked Find Now. In the past I got all the printers shared from each of my print servers. Now I am only getting shared network printers on workstations throughout the domain, not any on the print servers. All the printers are shared correctly on the servers and I can still map a printer by browsing the server (\\SERVERNAME) and selecting connect. Any idea why all the print server printers will not display? Any idea how to get them back? Thanks, James

Hello, Issue: I have setup offer remote assistance via a GPO link to the domain in my SBS 2003 LAN. I can connect to user’s computers using the help and support tool but when I try to start the Remote Assistance an error takes place “userinit.exe – Application error. Hello, Sorry to have to ask but I wonder if someone can help. I am trying to connect to a Windows Server 2003 via either Windows XP Home or Windows 2000 Professional. I have configured the client with PPTP. I can connect to the server ok and using the \\server command can view all of the servers resources. What I cannot do is to login to the roaming profile and all I get is the local profile. I have made the changes as suggested by Microsoft regarding potential slow connections but to no avail. I have also tried logging in using the Windows 2000 Professional "Login using Dial up" but again, it only shows the local profile. How do I login to m…

2003R2 Dev web server will not play video
by Guest Saral6978- 0 replies
I'm going to try and explain this as best as I can...I'm stumped and need some ideas. We have a marketing company who developed a presentation video for us. We used a personal website on an XP box to test the launching of the video and it worked fine - played audio and video and showed you the video controls (play, pause, stop, etc). We then attempted to apply the same code and files to our DEV and TEST webservers, both of which are running Windows 2003 R2 server. For whatever reason, the video will not play. Just a little black screen and it doesn't even show the video controls. We then applied the same code and files to a windows 2000 test box on a…

mount WebDAV folder as local drive letter
by Guest George Valkov- 0 replies
I installed a Web server that supports Web DAV on IIS6, Windows 2003 Service Pack 2. It is accessible from the Internet, only ports 80 and 443 can pass through the firewall. Let's call it: http://www.mywebdav.com On the client side: Windows XP service pack 2, Internet Explorer 7 is installed, WebClient service is started automatically. I can open My Computer, click Tools, Map Network Drive, in the Folder field type: http://www.mywebdav.com/userhome/pub/ or type: \\http://www.mywebdav.com\userhome\pub and then click Finish. This will mount the WebDAV folder as a local drive letter. So far so good, this is the desired behaviour and it works. However fo…

Shortcut behaves different vs Start\Run \\serverXX
by Guest David- 0 replies

Hi, I have a 2003 Enterprise server SP2 32bit running here. On some computers, that aren't part of the domain, and not always, when I go to start \ Run, and type \\server to open the shares I should get prompted for a password (or a list of shares if I already authenticated) but I get a message: \\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have access permissions. An unexpected network error occured. If I go to the server through a shortcut to \\server , or through Network Places, I can access it just fine. This happens on XP Pro SP2 & SP3 & Vista Busines…

GPO works on desktop but not on notebook
by Guest Peter- 0 replies

Hello everybody, Got a strange phanomenon. Created a GPO (IE7_settings) which only should use SecurityZoneSettings under HKLM. In ZoneMap\Domains I added all URL's which I want to trust. And now the strange thing. In my OU, which contains desktops and notebooks, I assigned "IE7_settings" GPO. When I now log on a desktop, and visit a domain which I added to my ZoneMap\Domains, then IE7 marks it as "Trusted". When I log on a notebook and visit the same domain (URL) IE7 marks it as "Internet" I use same user on both machines for my test. With "gpresult" I already checked if both machines (desktop and notebook) use "IE7_settings" GPO. That's the case…

Hello. Problem: For dual core Opterons it sure seems like Win2003 SP2 does not support ACPI processor performance states (AMD PowerNow!)? RRAS Remote Access Policies filters keep coming back
by Guest ttripp- 0 replies
On my RRAS server, in the Remote Access Policies, there is a default policy, "Connections to Microsoft Routing and Remote Access server", which is policy #1. Under the "Edit Profile" button, on the IP tab, there are two IP filter buttons, one for Input Filters and another for Output Filters. Even though I did not set a filter, in the Input Filters settings, a filter with a source address and mask of "host" and a destination and mask of "any", keeps popping up, along with the setting to "Permit only the packets listed below". Now, this filter should not actually do anything (it should allow all traffic), but for some reason my VPN users can't access Exchange…

Change DNS server Serial Number Format.
by Guest SuperPlay- 0 replies
Hi Folks I there a way to change the format of the serial number which a Microsoft DNS server uses from a number i.e 1 then 2 then 3 etc to datechange? This is the report is from Dnsstuff.Com WARNING: Your SOA serial number is: 39. That is OK, but the recommended format (per RFC1912 2.2) is YYYYMMDDnn, where 'nn' is the revision. For example, if you are making the 3rd change on 02 May 2006, you would use 2006050203. This number must be incremented every time you make a DNS change. Cheers

Windows Home Server and Pentium M "Speedstep" function
by Guest Lorenzo Sandini- 0 replies

Hello, I used to have a winXP pro machine as a file/ftp/web server in my home and it worked quite. It is based on an Asus P4P800-SE motherboard, a CT-479 adapter for Pentium M CPUs, and a Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz), 2 x 512MB DDR. Under XP, the CPU throttled down to 800MHz when idle, and went up to max frequency when under load (RARing archives for example). Problem is the CPU won't automatically throttle up or down anymore in WHS. I can manually adjust the frequency with utilities like NHC (Notebook Hardware Controller) or Speedswitch, and this seems to work as the current CPU speed is reported in the system properties tab, and the CPU temp also goe…
