RAID

râd) Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. RAID disk drives are used frequently on servers but aren't generally necessary for personal computers. RAID allows you to store the same data redundantly (in multiple paces) in a balanced ay to improve overall performance. There are number of different RAID levels: Level 0 -- Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance: Provides data striping (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disk drives) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not deliver fault tolerance…

Can't See My Counter Logs
by Guest mwebb- 0 replies
I like to run counter logs on my Win2003 servers. On two of my servers when I save the log settings and try to see the data using IE I get a security stop and IE will not open the htm file. It tells me to added the "site" to trusted sites. When I try that I get another error that tells me the site must be https. My other servers just give me a yellow bar warning but allow me to continue. How do I fix the servers that will not allow me to open the htm file with IE?

Loss of share permissions on USB drive swap
by Guest Ken L- 0 replies
I am having problems with the resetting of the share permissions I've established when a USB drive is swapped. Here is the scenario . . . I have two, USB2-based external hard drives that I want to use in rotation for backups. While one drive is mounted on the system to receive the current backups, the second drive is stored in a secure location, offsite, for disaster recovery purposes. The online USB drive receives backups from both the machine on which it is mounted, as well as several other machines (through a share defined on the root of the USB drive). Share permissions are set to allow full control to allow the remote machines to manage the bac…

Win2003 SP2 Time Synch Mystery
by Guest Kryten- 1 reply
Hi, We have two Win2003 servers that ought not to automatically adjust for daylight savings changes, so that option was deselected for these boxes. Now we noticed that not only is automatically adjust for dst switched on but the boxes are pointing to NTP server "time.windows.com" (which they can't even ping). The only thing that we are aware of that changed on these boxes is SP2 was installed. We are pretty certain that no-one would have changed this setting without talking to us first. I'd REALLY appreciate some advice about what may have caused this config change on these boxes. Thanks, Stuart

I'm planning to run Perfmon (sometimes also called System Monitor, depending on the version of Windows) on a server connected to a network to monitor system performance, but I don't know which Windows OS to use. Does anyone know the differences between the versions of Perfmon packaged with Windows 2000, 2003, and 2008? Thanks!

Access-based enumeration - Any fix for interactive login/terminal services?
by Guest Eric Young- 0 replies
Hello, One of the longstanding limitations I have faced with Access-based enumeration is that is does not work for interactive logins or terminal services logins when accessing the file/folder structure directly from the drives. It works great for server shares, though. I was curious if anyone has come across a "fix" for this? Or, perhaps this is addressed in Server 2008 (?). Thank you, Eric

Server 2008 and Windows Vista both ship with v6.0 of diskpart, which adds the ability to shrink disk partitions. Does anyone know if that version can be safely run under Server 2003 and Windows XP? Thanks, BJ

Unable to access mapped network drive
by Guest Daniel- 0 replies
Hi guys, I am unable to access a mapped network shared folder after mapping it. I tried to mapped to another folder, it works. I had checked security settings and also permissions, gave it a full access, but still it doesn't work. The strangest thing is, when I mapped from the "Run" box, it works! Same folder, same server, everything same. Just that when I mapped it under right click "My Computer", map network drive, i still can mapped, but have message " Access is denied". Anybody have any solutions? Thanks in advance!

by Guest Kim Webb- 0 replies

I have a login script running so when users login the drives are mapped. In the last week or so suddenly instead of the four regular mapped drives users will have extra random drive letter assignments. Any ideas what might be happening? Here is the login script: net use h: /delete net use j: /delete net use f: /delete net use u: /delete net use h: \\pos-file\user\%username% /persistent:YES net use j: \\pos-file\user /persistent:YES net use f: \\pos-file\files /persistent:YES net use u: \\pos-file\alumni /persistent:YES So when a user goes into My Computer they will see: f:\ = \\pos-file\files h:\ = \\pos-file\kim j:\ = \\pos-file\user u:\ = \\p…

Problems with WSUS on SBS 2003
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 1 reply
I installed WSUS 3.0 SP1 on 2 SBS2003 servers on different networks and both the installations look slightly different. E.g. in a custom mmc on one of the servers I can add SBS Update Services snap-in whereas on the other one I have only Update Services which look a lot different. Then the server that uses proxy and has ISA server installed gives me Cannot Display the Webpage message when I try accessing WSUS management console from https://servername:8530/WsusAdmin. Moreover when I get to the Update Services console on it it doesn't detect any other computers. The other one detects all of the computers on it's network but in my custom mmc in SBS Update Services…

Can Disk Quota Warning Reports Include Different Definitions
by Guest Scott- 0 replies
Using R2 SP2 with disk quotas, when reports of large files and least accessed files are sent to users who hit the warning threshold, can the defaults of 5.00 MB and 90 days be changed? I would like to use 20 MB and 365 days. If so, how. They don't appear to be configurable within the File Server Resource Manager interface.
