Hi All, I am using mailto.exe for alerting from batch files for various administration tasks. I get this error in the event log. Reporting queued error: faulting application MAILTO.EXE, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x000210c8. However mailto.exe works perfectly I am just worried about ntdll.dll error in the application log. Has anybody experienced this, please let me know. Thanks Raj

DFS x64 and x32 servers??
by Guest WetBehindEars- 0 replies
Ok, here is my issue. I have a server in the main office which is a 32bit non R2 release (Domain Controller). I have a branch office server which is 64bit and IS a R2 version server. I want to setup DFS between these two servers. I plan on upgrading the non R2 server to a R2 version. My question follows, can you run DFS between a 32bit R2 server and a 64bit R2 server or should the DFS run on matching server types?

Hello, As a test of our backups, I need to do a bare-metal restore of a Windows server using a full backup taken with NTbackup. Presuming that I'm restoring to a server with identical hardware and drive layout, can I do the following: - install Windows 2003 with the same service-pack level into a different Windows directory, e.g., c:\winrestore and into no domain; - run NTbackup and select to restore everything on all drives and the system state, with the option to restore over any existing files; - reboot the server after the restore completes. The server is just an application server in a domain; it's not a DC or anything like that. I'm thinking that…

Hi, I've installed Terminal Server on a w2k3 machine. When two remote client are connected, the server slows down and I can see that two srcss.exe processes are "consuming" up to 7 MB/s of I/O. I don't understand what it is and what to do to improve the situation... Regards Oriane

Win2003R2 - copied exe files are blocked by default
by Guest Saral6978- 0 replies
I just installed Win2003R2 on a server. I copied a service pack from one location on a different server to my new server and the only way I can install it is if I right-click on the exe, go to properties, and specifically click the "unblock" button. I realize that this is a new security feature, and it appears to be the default setting, but if I wanted, how is this feature turned off? After my server was configured, a screen came up about updating the server and such, and I thought I caught something about blocking ports, etc. I closed the window before really reading it thoroughly. Thanks! Sara

Accessing event logs and services from a remote Server
by Guest Jupst- 0 replies

Hi, Does anyone know which permissions / settings are required to allow a user to remotely access the Services and Event Logs of a Windows Server via the MMC Snap Ins? I need to allow a group of users read-only access to this information from one central Server. I don't want the users to have Domain Admin rights. Currently, the users have read-only access to the logs when they are logged in locally, but they have no access when connecting from the MMC of another Server. Any help would be appreciated!!! Many thanks.

Windows 2003 server in workgroup event id 8009 in workgroup server
by Guest ray3d84- 0 replies

I am running Windows 2003 server in workgroup and have event id 8009 errors in event wiewer. I would like to know how to disable this server from trying to be a master browserv. I tried this HKLM\Sytem\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters. There are three settings: no (can not be a browser), yes (very detailed, basically this would be the favored child in a tie if it got that far, for example, if two WINNT Servers were equal as far as everything to that point goes, the one with this registry entry would win the tie, and auto (will act as browser if asked by Master Browser). NT Workstations have it set to NO and NT Servers have it set to YES by …

Cannot terminate tasks

Hello * my Windows Server 2008 currently is in an unacceptable state: I tried to access a DVD with Windows Explorer and from a command prompt but the DVD seems to be broken because it did not work to read it. Now, I cannot close both the command prompt window and the Explorer Window any more. I have tried the close button, Task Manager "kill process", and taskkill from another command prompt but the windows just don't close. On Windows Server 2003 similar cases could all be handled at least with taskkill, so how can I do the same thing on Windows Server 2008. All other services run fine. Note, this is a server machine so a hardware reset is n…

Allowing a given port to only be access by a given application
by Guest nathanjlaw@yahoo.com- 0 replies

Hi, Is it possible to configure windows server 2000 or 2003 to only allow a given port to be used by a given application, e.g. application named fred can only use port 123 and no other application can ever use port 123. The reason for this is that occasionaly the application must be taken down and during this time other applications can grab the port so when fred comes back up it cannot run on that port. I am not a server expert and it is not my applications, but a client was experiencing this situation and I thought I would ask around if there was such a configuration that could be put in place. Thanks, Nate

Some machines detect an update as needed when others don't??
by Guest KCSteele- 0 replies

We have a couple groups of machines, the first group are machines that we own and the second group are leased. Both groups are running Office 2003 SP2. The second group are all created from a newer image, and the first group are all created from an older image. Both images had Office 2003 installed into them from a network share. When office updates are deployed they are done via SMS. For some reason, there are a couple Office updates for Outlook that only the first group detects as needed, while the second group does not. This was the case with MS07-003 and its replacement, MS08-015 (both Outlook remote code patches). Any idea why only the first group is dete…

I also can not Remote Desktop in either, I am guessing some service is preventing both of them, but I don't know how to go about fixing anything without a keyboard. The ksyboard does work will the machine is booting up... Thanks

Any Ideas?

Hello-- I have recently converted .Net 1.1 Web App to 2.0. There are approx. 25 Users that use the Application some are Citrix-ing and VPN-ing from a distance (many states away). The App is running on a Win2Ksp4 Server, and using a Sql Server 2K sp4 (and Reporting Services sp2). This also means that our WebApp running on 2.0, will sometimes in a dynamically generated link provide a link to a Reporting Services report in the 1.1 framework. Ever since the conversion we periodically enter a "Stuck" State ... What we currently know about the "Stuck" state: - If caught early it seems that non-WebServer Services are responsive. - When Stuck, the system exhibits …

Service interaction with desktop
by Guest Henry- 0 replies

Hi, I have an application that can run as a service and places monitoring screens on the desktop. This service accesses document images stored on another server. When run under the local service account the service starts, the monitoring tools start on the desktop but it obviously cannot access the images on the network. When I use another account to start the service (an account with network access) the service does not initialize properly and the desktop monitoring tools do not start. This problem even occurs whether I use a domain admin account or local admin account. The accounts I have tried have the right to logon as a service granted to them …

SBS 2003 version and license questions
by Guest Bodie the Dog- 0 replies

I recently inherited a small network running SBS2003 with about 50 XP Pro workstations. My predecessor passed away suddenly and didn't document things well, plus I'm new to the Small Business Server world. Swell. We may have a licensing issue.... Using the Licensing utility I show we have Installed Licenses: 5 and Maximum Usage: 7. My Computer shows we're running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server. Winver shows the same, version 5.2 Locked away I just found 13 license packs (5 devices each) for "Client Access License for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Transition Pack." I'd like to get us correctly licensed, but …

I have a large disk array SATA Perc 5 array Hardware is ok. The drive is only part there. Some folders are empty and the rest I can not copy to or from. The power faild during an update and I think the File table is corrupt. I would like to back up the current file table and the second copy of the file table but I am getting lost in that I am not sure if I need to back up the $MFT and $MFTmirr or if the MBR is also part of the meta data needed to restore the state. Bottom line I need to restore the file system prior to the crash. What tools should I use? C drive is mirrored OS and is OK. E, F, G, are on the Raid array over 10 TB This is a MS NAS s…

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Very strange vbscript issue. Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2008 15:17:16 -0400 From: Brian Cowan <brcowan@nospam.nospam> Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.server.scripting Hello all, this is my first post, so please be gentle... I am dealing with a customer with a Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise edition server (x86) with SP2. When they use a 3rd party web server, and it launches a vbscript, the scripting engine fails with what appears to be a "file not found" error. It essentially says it can't initialize the scripting engine because of this error. You may note that I don't have the exact error text... Well that's because…

Introducing PowerShell (MSH) - Windows answers to linux shell?
by Guest Pavs 2007- 0 replies
PowerShell is built on top of the .NET Framework and replaces the old process of using text to pass data like the current CMD shell. PS is a scriptable language that provides an alternative to the manual changes you make through a GUI. It is more powerful than Perl or WSH, although those two technologies can help with automating a lot of tasks. Let's look at what PS is and is not and hopefully it will help clear things up a bit. http://www.windowhaxor.net/index.php/2007/07/31/introducing-powershell-msh-windows-answers-to-linux-shell/

System Monitor on Win2K3 vs Win2K
by Guest TroubleMan- 0 replies

I have noticed that performance logs created on 2K3 three boxes take alot longer to open than on 2K boxes. If I have two identical servers collecting the same counters in system monitor the 2K3 box takes alot longer to open the same size log file. The only differnce between the servers is the OS. Any ideas on what to look for? So far I have: Tried the test on two newly built servers Tried to open the log file on servers that did not create the log file Rebuilt the performance counters per Microsoft KB
