Setting up a Print Server for first time!
by Guest Flash3200- 5 replies

I need to create a Print Server and have never done so before. We currently print by just using direct IP printing from each workstation, but are looking to go to a Server Queue so that we can consolidate printers. I was not able to find any good documentation on Microsoft.com for how to properly set up a print server. The server for this is 2003 R2 SP2. Thanks

Quirky RDP issue when using a script during shutdown
by Guest Aaron B.- 0 replies
Hey guys, Just up front - This is not a show stopper problem for me. But, it does cause a little eye rolling from other admins who I am trying to get to start using this tool... I created a little script that pops up when an administrator shutsdown a server or logs out (gpedit.msc kicks it off) of a server that dumps what the admin did on the server into a centeralized database. Then we all can see what each other did on a box and everyone is familiar with the history of what is going on. The only wierd thing though is that one can't cut and paste from *the client desktop* to the servers "activity log form" (aka the script that kicks off) while …

I have some local asp.net web sites on a windows 2003 server that save cookies as pages are navigated. On the Windows 2003 server, cookies will not save. External web sites, Amazon, google, etc, save cookies to that server. Cookies are enabled for intranet and internet. Security for intranet sites are set to LOW. The ASP.NET configuration (2.0) is set to use cookies and Inproc session state. Any ideas why this does not work on a Windows 2003 server but does on Windows 2000 workstation and server, as well as Windows XP? thanks

Identipass or PeachTree 2007 - server lockup?
by Guest Leythos- 1 reply

I have a server that has been locking up, hangs when you login locally, and the only difference is the Identipass database/passkey software and the PeachTree 2007 database server component. There are no event logs, no warnings, nada. Anyone else running Identipass or PeachTree 2007 server components on their server? -- Leythos - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist" spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 for proper email address)

Backup Recommendatoin?

I just installing a new Dell server with Server 2003 and two workstation running Xp Pro. There is a single data drive that is being backed up daily. My concern is backing up the Windows installs of all the computers. I do have a DVD DL burner on the server. Is there software that will let me burn image files of the Windows drives that will not be changing except for minor updates every few weeks so that if any PC crashes I can limit my downtime in getting the network repaired?

DCPROMO Question
by Guest Ann- 10 replies
I was reading up on decommissioning a DC. This is the last server in the domain, no other servers are in the domain. I plan on running DCPROMO to remove Active Directory and then shut the server down since it's no longer needed. My question is (and it's a weird one), when you're going through the wizard and it states that the domain will no longer exist, does that rip out all the information from the DNS server for that domain I'm removing or will it stay there? (it's on a completely different server) Odd question I know, I hope I asked it right. Thanks in advance.

Problems after installing "User Profile Hive Cleanup Services"
by Guest Holger- 0 replies
Hello, after installing the "User Profile Hive Cleanup Services" my Visual Studio 6.0 (SP6) (and windbg, also) displays a lot of messages at the end of a debug session. The messages are of the kind: WINREG: Tracked key data for object 0x... WINREG: Name: \REGISTRY\USER\S-1-5-21-... Frames 12WINREG: Frame 0 = 0x... WINREG: Frame 1 = 0x... WINREG: Frame 2 = 0x... WINREG: Frame 3 = 0x... .... There were no such messages before the installation of UPHClean. Unfortunately the messages remain after an uninstall of UPHClean and even after a reinstall of Visual Studio. Can someone give me a hint what's the reason for these messages and how I can get rid o…

W2K3 Problem: DMA reverts to PIO -- help
by Guest Steeve- 1 reply
Using Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, I am still having a problem with an IDE controller only operating in PIO mode instead of DMA (which slows my system to a crawl). This problem was described in KB81742 and KB919168, and was supposed to be resolved by SP2. It is also described here: http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10 None of the proposed solutions seems to work for me. If I delete the MasterIdDataChecksum key (see http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10), it works temporarily, but then reverts to PIO. Can anyone tell me what to do to solve this? Thanks! Steve

And now the Administrator login and my login can not get some of the subdirectories that I changed the permissions to. When i went to change the permissions for this one directory for the group everyone i got a message saying "Caution! Deny entries take prioity over Allow Entries, which can cause unintented effects due to group memberships. Do you want to continue?" i said yes because i was doing the group eveyone and figured the Administrator was not included. however i am wrong. now when i go to the directory i get this message directory "is not accessible. Access is denied". however, the users can get into the directories that i can not get in…

by Guest michael- 2 replies

I am trying to building a RIS image that is full automated but I am having one screen that will appear for user interaction. The screen is after the formatting and coping files and the GUI part of the install starts. The screen says, "Welcome to the Windows XP Setup Wizard" I have found that this only happens when I have the OemPreinstall=Yes, set in the Unatteneded section of the restndrd.sif file. If I turn this setting to =Off then the prompt does not happen but I do not get my oem drivers to install. Please let me know what I need to do to remove this prompt from my install. Here is a copy of my ristndrd.sif: [Data] AutoPartition=1 M…

Multiple Services Won't Start
by Guest Roland- 1 reply

We have a server problem after a shutdown and reboot that I can't seem to find any solutions for. The server is a Windows 2003 Standard O/S with SP1 installed. We shutdown the server yesterday morning to relocate within the server room. After powering back on the server restarted differently than expected. We recieved a message about a service or services not starting. We checked services and many were not starting even though they are set to Automatice. When clicking on these services or properties, they do nothing. Each returns and error depending on what the service is dependent on if any. Additionally, we looked in event viewer for clues, but…

Windows 2003 SP2 R2 and slow behavior of EXPLORER.EXE
by Guest Denis Lamothe- 3 replies

I am currently in the process of debugging 3 servers on one domain (2 DC and a simple member server) all running on Windows 2003 SP2 R2. I will explain the problem more in details... it all started when i installed SP2 on the member server. Everything was working fine on all 3 servers before SP2. However, when i install SP2 on one of the servers, i am getting slow behavior of EXPLORER.EXE getting so slow, that a window opened becomes NOT RESPONDING... but, if i let it go for a couple of minutes, it will eventually become active again. I also notice that hitting Start and Program, the browsing of menu is slow... it's also slow when i Start, Run and type …

Print Services for UNIX and Permissions
by Guest Anwar Mahmood- 0 replies

Hi all, I'm working on a project to integrate Macs to a predominantly Windows Server 2003 Active Directory network. In a test environment, I've joined an iMac to Active Directory and can successfully logon with different Active Directory accounts. I then want to print to network printers. This is most reliably achieved using UNIX standards on the iMac and on the Windows Server 2003 box. So, I've installed Print Services for UNIX on the server, created a printer and shared it. I can create a printer on the iMac and print successfully to the shared printer without problems. However, if I then modify the default permissions, withdrawing the Everyone e…

by Guest PCKC- 1 reply

I have an NT domain 'DOMAIN' and one W2K3 R2 Standard file server. The W2K3 server is not joined to the domain, but belongs to a workgroup 'DOMAIN'. I have a few XP workstations which also belong to a workgroup 'DOMAIN'. When attempting to access shares on W2K3 file server shares, they are prompted to enter their credentials. File shares are shared with everyone full control. Is there a prevent users from being prompted for their passwords - without having to join the NT domain?

Windows Server 2003 - Home Server
by Guest Roger Stenson- 1 reply

Hi all Given that this version of the 2003 server is getting reasonably visible on the Microsoft site, I was disappointed to read that it was seen purely as a server. I hoped it would run Windows Media Center, I would really like a one machine solution to deal with all my business whilst away. It would be nice to ask this program to do all my TV recording without leaving a Desktop running. Also it seems a server rather than client role to service XBOX machines. .. I would be grateful to hear if it would run XP Media Server, or perhaps as a compromise,, would run side by side under Virtual Machine with a Vista Home Premium system that could do this work…
