Server 2003 - Limiting jobs sent to Print Spooler?
by Guest daniel_l_v- 0 replies
Hi All, At work we utilise a Windows Server 2003 Print Server. We have recently had issues whereby customers have unwittingly sent huge (200+MB) jobs to printers, causing slowdown on the Print Server. Is there any way to limit the size of individual print jobs that are sent to the Print Server? Is there a way of stopping such jobs before they even reach the Print Server? Note it would be preferable to accomplish this within Microsoft's own environment and tools, rather than resorting to 3rd Party, but any ideas appreciated. Regards, Daniel V

troubleshooting performance monitor counters
by Guest Scott W- 0 replies
I am trying to use Performance Monitor on my Exchange Server. Initially, ALL of the objects and counters were NUMBERS - and these numbers meant nothing to me. Using KB article 152513 I was able to find that the Perflib key was missing a very important sub-key and data. I have restored this key and am now getting the standard counters. The non-standard counters are still just listed as numbers and I have not had any luck troubleshooting this problem. Does anyone have any additional information - HELP!! Thanks.

Hi Everyone, I am trying to allow a non-admin user to run a scheduled task on a remote server for reporting purpose, without putting this user as a member of the local Administrators group, the local Backup Operators group, the domain Server Operators group. Can this be done and what is the best way to acheive this?

Modify CIW logon screen
by Guest Harold- 0 replies
I have a completely private network where we perform PXE based installation. After thousands of times of entering usernames and passwords to get to the OS choices, fingers become numb. I know that it is not best practice to remove the logon screens, but how do I do this? is it possible? I have read through the material at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739932.aspx around designing custom RIS experiences, but it recommends not to remove the logon screen, presumably for security purposes which, again, are not a concern here. Any help is appreciated. Harold

Migration from SBS 4.5
by Guest DianeA- 0 replies

I'm planning my migration from SBS4.5: (long overdue) 1. Anything worth keeping has been moved off of SBS (not using Exchange or SQL) basically ready to dump it. 2. Configured target box with NT4.0 BDC and ready to promote to PDC and run upgrade 3. Secondary BDC in the wings A few loose ends (questions): Q1. The target hardware will hold Windows 2003... Is there any reason I would want to go to Windows Server 2000 first and then to Windows 2003? Q2. My plan was to: - unplug the secondary BDC from network (after synch). - Unplug SBS from network - Promote BDC (Target machine) to PDC - At this point... Prior to upgrade... should I remove Target Machi…

by Guest Rick Lipkin- 0 replies

To All I have a wierd situation where I have a very successful ADO xHarbour\FWH C++ application ( executable ) which resides on a Win2003 server. When the users run the executable from the server ( shortcut on their pc ) the application connects to the off site SQL server and runs flawlessly. However .. if you are at the server console ( physically at the server ) .. and you run the same application ( on the server ) it will start but fail to connect to the first table. Totally exhausted here trying to find an answer .. I have found Google ideas on adding Persistant Security Info=False to no avail. Here is the connection string : oRs := TOleAut…

Volume shadown copy (VSS) stopped by itself
by Guest Patrick- 0 replies
Hello all, I'm running server2k3 x64 + exchange2007 sp1 on a server, i configured the VSS on a volume, it ran daily no problem. My problem is the VSS and MS VSS Provider Services kept stopping by itself everyday, it doesn't failed or error whatsoever but only gives information in the event log said these services entered the stopped state. I can manually start the services again, but it's very annoying. Does anyone have idea about this?

Network Software
by Guest SPG- 0 replies

A while back in some online publication I read where an Administrator said that every morning he ran a network scan that inventoried all workstations hardware and software, and that it would flag any workstation that had a change in either the hardware or software. This, he said, is how he discovered some malware that was installed on 30 machines overnight. I just installed Softinventive's Total Network Inventory and am still learning it, when I have the time. But, does anyone know of any network scan software that will flag any changes in workstations (both hardware and software). Thanks, Sam

FTP and Windows Firewall
by Guest Chris- 0 replies
Hi I am having a bit of trouble with FTP. I have set up FTP on my server, which works fine, but as soon as I enable the firewall the passive FTP does not work. Passive FTP uses 2 ports to transfer data , one is for the connection (21) and the other random port is used for the actual data transfer. I have setup IIS to use only certain ports using the cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set /MSFTPSVC/PassivePortRange "5001-5201" Command and opened up those ports on the firewall. Now sometimes I can connect and at other times I can’t – I can’t access certain folder either. How can I solve this issue?

Help! Configuring iSCSI in Server 2008 Core is terrible...
by Guest Ed Swindelles- 0 replies

I am trying to configure a Server 2008 Datacenter Core server to mount an iSCSI volume. The server has multiple NIC's, one of which is on the iSCSI VLAN. The server is in a workgroup and will be a Hyper-V host. On a separate Win 08 box with a full installation and domain membership I can mount the iSCSI volume no problem with Storage Explorer by entering the target portal address and logging into the right IQN. In addition, from that '08 box (or another Vista box that I have) I can fully remotely manage the Server Core box through a combination of firewall rules and local accounts (cmdkey /add). So, I know my problems are not permissions related. Aga…

Attempted to open LSA policy, threat?
by Guest Brock Hensley- 0 replies

Source: LsaSrv Event ID: 6033 An anonymous session connected from DESTRUCTOR has attempted to open an LSA policy handle on this machine. The attempt was rejected with STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED to prevent leaking security sensitive information to the anonymous caller. The application that made this attempt needs to be fixed. Please contact the application vendor. As a temporary workaround, this security measure can be disabled by setting the \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\TurnOffAnonymousBlock DWORD value to 1. This message will be logged at most once a day. I've been seeing this lately on a few different servers. Can anyone…

Creating a User Profile template
by Guest JohnB- 0 replies

I just tried this for the first time and got mixed results. Not all settings showed up when I tried the new profile. This is on Server 2003 with the workstation being XP. This is what I did: - created an account called profile - logged in as profile and set the Desktop, etc the way I wanted it. One of the things I set was the wallpaper. I created a BMP file and saved it to My Pictures, and then chose that with Display Properties. - I then logged in with an admin account and, from System Properties>Advanced>User Profiles, I copied the profile for user "profile" to \\Server\profiles\AnotherUser - Set the Profile Path for AnotherUser to \\Server\…

Trace how users access files (i.e. mapped drive or UNC)?
by Guest John- 0 replies

Is there any way to do this? I need to redo our folder structure and I'd like to find out if anyone is accessing files/folders via UNC rather than our mapped drives (per the login script). Wasn't sure if there was something on the server (auditing) or if I would have more luck from info on the client. If at all? Thanks in advance!

cannot create file “(file.name)” for writing
by Guest Stephen Bloomer- 0 replies
We have been running the identical setup for several years and suddenly students cannot create new web sites using MS FrontPage. When they try, they get a message that ‘cannot create file “(file.name)” for writing’. We are running WinXP SP2 fully patched, Office 2002 (we have also tried 2003). Servers are W2k3 SP2 fully patched. We have not changed any GP setting in several months Problem seems to be with server security or a server patch, as students can save work to a USB drive (if they have one) and there are no issues when a Domain Admin tries the software. Does anyone know of a patch that would cause this increased security or a GP setting…

performance logs not writing to disk
by Guest rschatz- 0 replies

I have Windows Server 2003 and am monitoring with a counter log. I should be able to look at the current log even while it continues to add data. I was able to do this before. However, I wanted to change something in the log - remove a couple counters - so I changed that and then waited. Even though it is running and adding an entry every 5 minutes, it does not seem to actually write out to the file. I stopped the counter log and restarted it to see if that would fix it. After I stopped it, the log file did have data in it. The new log that was started still does not have any data in the file after a day. What's going on here? I don't want to have to stop …
