looking for event log monitoring
by Guest bruce- 0 replies
I have a utility I use to gather event logs. However, it only works on the pre-defined sources -- Application, System, DNS, etc. We are running Enterprise Vault from symantec, and it defines it's own "Enterprise Vault" event source. These events do not appear in the App log. I'm trying to find something that will handle 3rd party apps in the Event viewer. TIA

Missing Performance Counter Names?
by Guest Timothy- 0 replies
Hello All, Trying to troubleshoot some issues with a Windows 2003 server. Wanted to set up some counters in Performance Monitor only to discover that all of the names are missing. The counters just show up with numbers. Some research on the web led me to this: http://www.itnewsgroups.net/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.general/topic5739.aspx And this: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/659ab40f-5ca0-4f4f-b003-8f3f3e4514091033.mspx?mfr=true On my system that PerfStringBackup.ini file is only 10k. I did the lodctr /s: command to save a copy of the currently active counters -- that file was only 8k. Tried to restore off the 10k …

Group policy errors
by Guest Chris Ferraro- 0 replies

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 Small Business server. I am experiencing the error below every time group policy processing runs. I see it in the event log every 5 minutes. I enabled userenv logging and noted the error "GetUserNameEx failed with 14" at the same time. I determined that the error 14 referenced here is "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation". There is sufficient storage available. I found references to excessive group membership causing this issue, but I don't have very many groups available and no user should be a member of very many. I performed the steps listed in Q article 937535, but these steps did not make a d…

Primary NIC not being recognized
by Guest doris- 2 replies
Hi, I'm running Virtual Center 1.4.1 and the ESX host is at 2.5.5. My VM is built with a windows 2003 server OS and has two NICs. My binding order is set on these NICs but the VM is not recognizing the primary IP - it keeps defaulting to the second. I'm trying to figure out if this is a VM/win2003 issue or a win2003 issue. The same environment with windows 2000 works fine. Has anyone else encountered this? Thanks for any help

Off-line folders - possible to omit certain folders
by Guest Laphan- 1 reply
Hi All I'm using the off-line folders default setup when XP Pro machines hook up to a Win2k3 server AD domain and I'm finding that the off-line folders feature just won't work with certain laptops because the user has sooooo much crap on them that the sync never completes. I was thinking that if I could designate one folder in their My Docs so that this folder doesn't get sync'd then I could get them to put all their personal stuff (they're teachers by the way!!) into this folder and just keep the rest (ie work stuff) to be sync'd. Is this possible? Thanks

Hardware firewall recommendation...
by Guest Bobby C- 1 reply

Sorry for the lengthy intro but I wanted to make sure I covered all the bases. I run my custom software business from my home. When cable modem service became available some years ago I signed up. From the first day of cable modem service I've had my network behind a hardware firewall (currently using a Linksys broadband router which has a built in "firewall"). I've decided to consolidate all my web "services" that are hosted on outside hosting services and host them on my own, in-house server. I'm upgrading my internet connection from residential to business class (I'm a Comcast customer). The main service that I need to make available is my websit…

EFS over network
by Guest James Davies- 0 replies
I've created a folder which I've encrypted using the EFS on Windows Server 2003 and I'm trying to access it from a mapped drive on a standalone PC (the drive was mapped using the credentials of the account that was used for the encryption) but I'm getting an access denied message. Is it not possible to access encrypted files over the network in a non-domain environment? If not can anyone recommend software that can do this? I've tried TrueCrypt but that has problems over the network. thanks.

VLAN Domain Controller Communications Issues
by Guest JT- 0 replies
I have 4 DCs, 2 on each VLAN. My default VLAN, VLAN 0, can communiicate with VLAN 1. VLAN 0 has higher security, so clients on VLAN 0 may initiate communication with VLAN 1, but VLAN1 clients cannot initate communication to VLAN 0. I have opened firewall ports that allow the DCs on both VLANS to communicate freely. The issue is, in the PIX log I see that DCs on VLAN 1 try to initiate communication with clients on Vlan 0. Of course this fails. Why do the DCs on VLAN 1 desire to communicate with clients on VLAN 0? I have the DNS for VLAN 0 clients pointed to the DCs on VLAN 0. It is a mystery to me why DCs on VLAN 1 desire to communicate with clie…

MS File Server Migration Wizard question
by Guest AllenK- 0 replies
Hello all, I am going to be installing a W2K3 Server in an existing W2K domain and I would like to use the FS Migration Wizard to copy shared folders to the W2K3 machine. One thing I have noticed is the old server has shared subfolders under shared folders. Example: \\oldserver\apps\users. I would like to maintain the same shared names on the new server as the old server. By default the new shares are created with a _oldservername at the end of the share name. I know I can change the root share before copying the shares, but have not figured out how to change the subfolders sharing so the _oldservername is not part of the new share. I'm not…

Access denied on Iomega Network drive in Windows 2003 R2
by Guest Bruce Wallace- 0 replies
We have an Iomega 250Gbyte network hard drive that was used to back up files from a Windows 2000 server that has failed. This drive was available to all users on our network. We have installed a new server running Windows 2003 Standard Edition 32 bit with no access controls specifically invoked. The Iomega drive can be found and mapped in Windows Explorer but none of the folders or files on it can be seen or accessed. Any attempt to create a new folder, for instance, gives 'Access is Denied'. We have added now a second (new) Iomega 250 Gbyte drive that gives the same result. These drives are also now no longer accessible by other users on the network, whi…

Workaround for a possible bug
by Guest Wowbagger- 0 replies
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but it was definitely an irritation. Workaround included. My server (2003) runs a script several times a day that pulls files off of a remote FTP site. It downloads the files into a temporary directory, then sorts them accordingly. It turns out that the permissions from the -remote ftp server- were being retained during the download, which was preventing people from being able to use the files locally. This behavior goes against every scrap of documentation that I have been able to locate, but the permissions set by the -remote ftp server- were being retained. I even followed the directions in http://support.microso…

When is the next RC Release of Windows Server 2008 Scheduled?
by Guest Don Gra- 0 replies

Does anyone know when Microsoft is planning to release the next RC version (i.e. RC1) of Windows Server 2008? I found an announcement that said that the current WLK cannot be used to certify drivers in Windows Server 2008 - but that they would be releasing an RTM version of the WLK (that may be used to certify drivers) along with the next RC release of Windows Server 2008 - but I have been unable to find the scheduled date! I know that the RTM is scheduled for the end of Feb '08 so I assume that the RC1 release will be sometime before that. Thanks, Don. -- Don Gra

taskbar icon balloon
by Guest j54ams- 1 reply

I reinstalled windows xp media center 2005 after installing a new hard drive. After doing so, the information balloons in the taskbar don't appear, just get popping sound. For instance, when using the safely remove hardware, I don't get the balloon stating it's safe to remove. Only hear the popping sound. When resting the cursor over an icon, I get the name of the program and right clicking brings up the menu. But, I can't get the information balloon.

Windows Server 2003 ASR Question
by Guest Robert Lindholm- 0 replies
Hello: I realize that the Automated System Recovery [ASR] process is different then the Emergency Recovery Disk [ERD] process, but its unclear if I can simply create an ASR disk or can an ASR disk only be created as part of a NTBackup operation? With ERD, you could make an ERD floppy without having to perform an additional backup using NTBackup, but with ASR, it seems as if you need to "piggyback" the ASR process onto a NTBackup. Is there a way to create an ASR disk without performing a NTBackup or if that's not possible, what is the minimal NTBackup type or more specifically how do you select the least amount of data to be backed up during the c…

Messages about corrupt files
by Guest Guus Ellenkamp- 0 replies

I get some weird messages about corrupt files when making a backup of files on a network location. I am using DFS. The files are on a virtual location with two domain controllers hosting this location. The files are also replicated to two folders. When backing up throught the network location I get error messages about some files being corrupted. When backing up the same files from one of the folders locally the backup works fine. System w2003. The problem happens as well as making backups on a 2003 server as well as on an XP Professional workstation. Please advise.

We want to transition our netmeeting.companyX.com server from Windows 2000 to 2003. What is the best way to do this? There are ILS locator settings, but I think if we change the IP in DNS to the new server..we may be fine (as long as it is installed and working on Win2003). Any help is appreciated! Steve

Cannot Manage Certificate Services
by Guest jfh777- 0 replies

Hello, I have an online subordinate CA. I requested a certificate from a new Citrix web interface server, and found that my CA is misbehaving. It appears to receive the request and issue a certificate, but it is not really working. On the CA itself, when I launch the management interface, the CA has a yellow warning sign and says " Warning - This CA is currently offline or unavailable". When the CA is double-clicked, this message appears: "Cannot manage certificate services. The network path was not found. 0x80070035 (WIN32: 53)" I read where the file and print sharing option has to be checked in Networking, under the IP settings. That was al…

Network mapped drives showing disconnected
by Guest FSN Tech- 0 replies

I have two Windows 2003 Standard Terminal Servers and a Windows SBS 2003 server. There is a script that maps network drives on the Terminal Servers when users log in. I have 2 network drives that show disconnected but work and if I do a net use from a command prompt those drives do not show up in the list. These servers also have Symantec Anti-virus 10.1.1 which I have seen there may be an issue with network mapped drives. I found this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932463 and deleted the two drives, logged off and back on but the drives did not map from the script. I would appreciate any help I can receive to fix this issue.
