Restrict Shutdown?
by Guest JT- 5 replies

Is it possible, using GPO's, to restrict users from shutting down their workstation but allow them to restart? It seems you can only restrict shutdown and that removes the restart command as well. We want to prevent users from shutting down at night. Countless emails and warnings and people still shut down their systems. But we want the option to allow them to restart in case they are asked by our department through the day without requiring a user excluded from the policy in having to do so. Workstations: XP Pro, Win2k Pro all patches security updates. 2003 native AD environment. Thanks

New to WDS.. Moving from RIS.. Please Help.

My current deployment method has been RIS. I have 4 images which install any PC I put on the network. Some have PXE network cards other need the use of a PXE floppy. It all works great. If there are driver changes I just change the $OEM$ folders and update the SIF file. Perfect. All of this is running on a single Server AD environment. This server runs AD, DHCP, DNS, WINS et al. Well now I've updated to SP2 and installed WDS and nothing works. My PXE boots give me a message about no boot image found and I'm getting a WDServer error, Event ID 769 and 770 in my event log. I'm very frustrated that what once worked flawlessly now is useless. Can anyone…

Do I really need to turn off the Firewall to add VPN Role?
by Guest rjcmi- 1 reply

I am attempting to add the remote access/VPN Role to my install of Server 2003. Currently the Server is working as a Terminal Server with about 30 users. I'd like to add the VPN role in order to assist with the remote offices with the ability to print to the network printers in their offices. When I go to add the role however I get a pop up saying the following: The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing is turned on. Stop the service and mark it disabled. I really don't want to take the firewall down on a server that is currently operating as a Terminal Server. If anyone can give me some advice or assistance on how that next step should be taken …

I hope someone can help me as I have been struggling with this for a couple days now, I will keep it as simple as possible... I took over a network administration position at my job, and I am trying to get our client pc's that are on our domain to download Windows Updates, but none of them will install them, they all Fail (they seem to download the updates just fine). If I build a new PC, I can download and install the updates just fine, but the second I join the PC to the Domain, it fails. All 10 PC's are part of the same Group in Active Directory, and I have verified that all the Windows Update settings are set at Not Configured in both Computer and …

Group Policy - How to use under Win2K3 SBS SP2
by Guest Tom- 1 reply

Win2K3 SBS P2 Exchange Server 2003 SP2 MS's website seems a little confusing to me in the GPMC area and I'm really not sure I have everything on my server, so.... I'm attempting to put a new user, WebUser, on our internal system and I'm not too sure how to proceed. I need to setup a web user, WebUser, in some group policy configurations. Essentially, I'm supposed to Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>Local Security Policy but Local Security Policy does not exist. In reviewing our system, I'm not too sure how to determine if the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) is installed. How do I determine if the GPMC is installed? [Final Destin…

Laptop as DC for disaster recovery?
by Guest Newell White- 2 replies

We have a single-domain LAN with 2xW2k3 servers, 35 XP workstations and 5 XP laptops accessing via VPN. The PDC emulator also hosts SQLserver and an Access database which is critical for all aspects of the business. Total disaster risks we face are fire and tidal inundation. In such event we would need to set up skeleton operation with small LAN to handle: (a) Diversion of manufacture and test (electronic PCB assemblies) to other company sites (b) Sales and customer support. © Insurance claim for lost components and products. I am considering recommending a disaster recovery strategy based on the following: 1) Install W2k3 on a laptop, promote to …

Secure Remote Desktop?

Hi. I need to use Remote Desktop to perform administrative tasks on a company server. I'm worried about people stealing passwords or snooping on the session. 1. Does Remote Desktop use a secure socket protocol by default (if not it probably should)? 2. If not, can I set it up to use SSL for both a. authentication (to prevent password theft) b. the entire session (to prevent snooping) Thanks.

We have a Windows 2003 server, SP2, (member server) that started becoming unresponsive once or twice a day. The event viewer shows three different Event ID 1053 events: 1) Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The RPC server is unavailable.). Group Policy processing aborted. 2) Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.). Group Policy processing aborted. 3) Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.). Group Policy processing aborted. Hello, I couldn't find a group for Longhorn (or 2008 server). I have a problem with Data Execution protection, whenever I open a web page that is a pdf file DEP closes internet explorer. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop this, if I add the Adobe programs as exceptions it still happens. Is there a way to turn off DEP?

Suddenly sluggish
by Guest JimG- 0 replies

My home desktop (2ghz Core Duo, 1gb ram) runs 2003 Server (mainly so I can use TS when traveling). It's a recent re-install of Standard Edition Sp2 and was working great. Suddenly (I'm sure I had something to do with it), certain functions have become very slow. Several examples: Invoking IE6 displays a partially built window for 15 seconds before loading my home page. It's a lattice-work of blue lines with the previous screen contents showing through during the pause. Invoking Eudora7 takes about the same time. Most other applications start up immediately. One peculiar one is that if I cut/paste between applications, the paste takes the same…

Hello, I am the not-so-knowledgeable-about-server-2003 network admin for a small charter school. I just updated to server 2003 SP2. All my students computers are wireless. If I log on as a domain admin on a student computer, no problem. If I log on as a student, the wireless connection will coneect and then drop, over and over again. Happens on more than one computer. Students have a different group policy applied to them. If I take the user out of the student group and make him a domain admin it works fine. Something in the student Group Policy? I have looked but nothing jumps out at me as possibly being the culprit. Please help, this is driving me crazy! …

Hi There I hope someone here can help me, I have a client which started having a problem with his Exchange server a few days ago, where his store wouldn't mount after a reboot. This morning they could not get the store mounted manualy and I started investigating, the csrss.exe is using 560+ MB ram and the server has only 3GB physical and 8Gb page. At start up the server is running 6.5GB of ram, which is wrong,. I have reinstalled SP2 for server 2003 and Exchange 2003. Every time you try and start the Public or Private Store it gives me C1041724 and in the event logs , id: 9175 - MsExchangeSA Is there anything that I can look at.

Access Based Enumeration causing email link problems
by Guest Gunnertac- 0 replies

My file server is setup reasonably simple like this. \\server\root directory is where all permissions start. Employees are granted only Traverse Folder\Execute File and Liste Folder\Read Data permissions. This lets them get through to lower folders without being able to add/modify root level folders. At the next level folder employees have custom permissions which is Full Access checked and then edited in Advanced Security to remove Full Control, Change Permissions and Take Ownership. All other permissions are granted and nothing is denied. This gives the employees pretty much full access to that lower level folder and they can add, remove, modify...ev…

Unable to logon to a Windows Server 2003 system.

Hello guys I have a problem with a server in one of our remote sites. We normally connect to this server using VNC. for the last two weeks we are unable to log on into it, basically what's happening is that when you type your credentials (Username/Password) the system attempts to log you on but instead of loading the desktop, it takes you back to "press contrl Alt and Delete" window. All network shares can be accessed without any problems, is just the fact that we are unable to log on to the server that is presenting an issue. I have also tried Remote Desktop and reboot the machine but didn't work either. I there any way to solve this problem remotely (…

Hi, I'm posting this here, because I'm not sure it's an ISA problem, can't remote in locally either which someone told me was probably not an ISA problem then. I'm trying to remote into our Windows 2003 Standard edition server and can't get in. Have set up RealVNC and Remote Desktop Connection on identical servers in the past which have been running ISA04 on the same server with no problems. But this one installation is causing me all sorts of problems. I can remote in using the logmein.com software, but I need someone on the other end to send me an invite. The correct ports are open for both RealVNC and remote desktop and if I watch the monito…

It looks like the Windows 2003 SBS is locking up files and it wont release those files when you are done. The lockes were released. However, The First person in the files lockes that file. When they leave the file stays locked. The OS will NOT release the locks.
