Reported drive size less than half of partition space?
by Guest ayrob- 0 replies
Hi, I have a Windows Server 2003 SP1 server using a Raid-5 array with 8 146GB drives. There is one basic partition that is 956.91 GB, but the NTFS file system reports it as 410.09 GB. This appears under disk management. The top line that shows the volume reports 410.09 GB. The lower area with the partition information shows 1 partition of 956.91 GB. Any idea how I can reconcile this difference without wiping the drive and restoring from backup? -- Thanks, Rob

Service Status Not Enumerating
by Guest YingAtt- 0 replies

Hello, We created a service using SC.EXE for <gasp> Oracle Application Server ("opmnctl.exe startall"), and the service creates ok, but have noticed the following problems: (1) Service appears in the services applet, but the status always shows not running despite the actual process status (2) Attempting to start the service via the GUI returns "failed to start in a timely fashion" yet the service does indeed come up Is there anything we can do to correctly enumerate? Thanks!

Win2003 server script error: mapping network drives
by Guest samhale- 0 replies
I'm the Tech Director at a school and we use Windows 2003 Server to pass scripts to clients on login depending on user and location. Everything worked well for a year with clients but this year our 4th grade class has been having sporadic problems. The general 'share' folder that all users have always works for these users, but around 20% of the time their individual user mapped-drive does not show up. It is not dependent on machine or user but seems random. Most times the user can logout and log back in and it maps their network drive properly. I'm no script expert (the one we use was created by a consultant) but I would appreciate any help or suggestions that a…

High CPU Usage After KB958644
by Guest jason.hill- 0 replies
Hi, We installed the critical update KB958644 on a Windows Server 2008 machine 2 days ago and have experienced a massive increase in CPU utilisation, apparently for the System process. Our performance monitor reports typically showed the web server running in the 5-15% CPU utilisation range for the whole day even under fairly heavy load. For the last 2 days, the CPU graph now looks like an earthquake has hit and we have had to reboot the server both days to reset the CPU to normal. Today, the graph was showing 90%+ CPU utilisation and we were not able to RDP to the box and all web sites were non-responsive so had to get the ISP to do a hard reboot. The grap…

Taskbar icons

This is probably an old question, but I can't configure my taskbar icons the way I want them by right clicking and "customize". Yes, I hit "apply" and "OK". Their status seems to change on their own (hide, show, hide when inactive), and I have actually watched this happen while I had the menu open. How do you make Windows use your settings only?

Upgrading from Windows Server 2K to 2003 Standard Server
by Guest nikunj.it@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hi, I am new to installation and managing of server. I got Windows 2000 Server running terminal services. It is configured well and working fine. I want to upgrade it to Windows Server 2003. My concern is creating ISO image of this current 2000 server. I want to create ISO/ Bootable CD or DVD that hold all information about server (i.e. 2000 Server Installation Files, Drivers, Data, Server Configuration such as Active Directory etc., Current Installed Softwares etc...). That means everything on the server must be backed up and restore into CDs or DVDs. Because if I will get any problem for installation of 2003 Server, so I can run those CDs or DVDs and set ser…

Any network performance impact by MSMQ
by Guest Bobson- 0 replies
hi all, THank you for your help in advance. I am not familliar with MSMQ. But I just found out there was a MSMQ with AD Integration installed by a third party program product support. In fact, before finding this happen, there have been some strange things happening. Some of the PCs were freezing (or slow) for couple minutes some times a week. Besides, when the only a promary DC rebooted, the client lost the domain connection (but we have a secondary one running), which this never happened before. Any ideas or inputs? Thank you for your help!

I have a certifictae server that WAS working perfectly. The only changes i'm aware of in the intervening period are 1) Manually republishing of root server's CRL to the location specified in the CDP extension 2) Installation of MOM advanced client The web interface reports "An unexpected error has occurred: The certification authority has not been started." This is incorrect, both "Certificate Services" and "Cryptographic Services" are started. The event log shows 2 errors Event Type: Error Event Source: CertSvc Event Category: None Event ID: 87 Date: 02/04/2008 Time: 14:22:42 User: N/A Computer: SERVERNAME Description: Certificate Se…

shutdown.exe does not shut down Oracle service cleanly
by Guest Yong Huang- 0 replies

On an Oracle list, we discovered that GUI shutdown (Start -> Shutdown) of the computer correctly runs the group policy shutdown scripts including "net stop oracleservice". But the command shutdown.exe does not run it, or does not run it completely, which in Oracle's term crashes the Oracle instance. Details are in the thread "Auto shutdown of Oracle for Windows reboot". http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/05-2008/threads.html#00263 Is there a way to let shutdown.exe behave exactly the same as GUI shutdown? How can I find the difference? I can't watch files or registry keys accessed with filemon or regmon because these programs are immediately close…

Performance monitor for Windows 2003 server
by Guest yvette.ye@gmail.com- 0 replies
HI...I am monitoring a server in performance monitor, and here is what I found: there is a client/server application: client - app server - SQL server, when the client run a function of the application, the CPU at the App server climbs up to 25%, and stays for about 5 minutes before the client can see the result. During the period, the memory, disk counter at the App server and SQL server are all low, except the CPU at the APP server maintains at 25% for 5 minutes. My first question is why the CPU not jump up to 100% and finish at a shorter time? My further test is that I have two clients running the same application, surprisely, the CPU is still at 25%, but…

Scheduled task, ran interactively ?
by Guest andyjgw- 0 replies
Hi Here's what I'm trying to do: Create a scheduled task that will be installed via group policy as a computer startup script, that will run at a certain time a day and interact with the currently logged on user. The task creation and such works fine, but I'm stuck in that the task runs with local SYSTEM privileges and thus the user never sees the interface (actually, an HTA html application pop up). I've tried messing around with /U and /RU switches with "schtasks / create" to no avail. If I specify the user, then it prompts for that user's password - and the problem with that anyway is that if User A puts in their password, but User B happens to be th…

Changing Server IP Addresses.
by Guest Rich B- 0 replies

Hello, I have two DC running Windows 2000. I have gone through the steps to prepare the 2000 servers for two new 2003 DC's. There were no problems with the preparation of the 2000 servers or the installation/promotion of the new servers. I have DNS installed and I am in the process of copying the DCHP and WINS databases to the new servers. We have over 100 thin clients over a very large geographical area that do not use DHCP so what I would like to do before I decommission the 2000 servers is to change the IP addresses of the new servers to the old servers and visa versa. Does anyone know if there are any problems with doing this? -- Rich

Windows 2003/2000 overall performance monitoring/benchmarks, monit
by Guest SPiderman- 0 replies

Hi, What is everyone using to get stats on overall server performance, benchmarks, and server monitoring? I like SiteScope quite a bit but it isn't in the budget. The windows perfmon is Ok but just not great. I am trying to look at stats on some servers to figure out why some applications are running slow or should I say servers. We have some sql apps, oracle db based apps, citrix servers, and some others. I want to just find a decent app that will give me an idea of if the hardware is getting maxed out or if it is just the app slowing down, any idea, suggestions, web links, pointers, whatever you got, I will take it, thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Windows Server 2003 AD managed from XP Professional Workstations
by Guest Mark Holland- 0 replies

Hello, I currently look after IT for a large corporate and have been putting together a good business case to move towards W2K8 AD. The RSAT toolset only seems to work currently on W2K8 and Vista. I know XP is essentially an old Operating System but our current corporate standard is Windows XP SP2. To get even the concept of a new "corporate standard" build of Vista at this time (even for ICT) approved, not alone to construct a new standard / test all our applications etc is not going to happen in the next year at least... Is there any plans for a version of RSAT to come out for XP. Remember we are in a corporate here so terminal servicing on to i…

Our WAN consists of 10 geographically dispersed sites. On each site there are 2 domain controllers. Our sites are connected by means of an MPLS network. One of the sites serves as the central hub, where all services are hosted. We are using an application called Active Administrator by a company called Scriptlogic to centrally record the security logs of all domain controllers on all sites. This application is hosted on a server in our central hub site. The database backend is hosted on another server on the same site. There is an Active Administrator service running on each domain controller. This service uploads details of the security log on each domain …
