Windows Server 2003 R2 activation
by Guest moontube- 0 replies
I installed Windows Server 2003 R2 over the top of a previous installation of Windows Server 2003 that was giving me the blue screen of death with increasing frequency. The new R2 operating system has worked fine with no problems. However there seems to be a bug in the activation code. I cannot activate it and time is running out on my 30 days. When I click on the activation icon, it disappears. I am not given the opportunity to activate. My operating system is going to self-destruct in two days and there is nothing I can do to stop it. Please help. -- moontube

by Guest Adam Sandler- 1 reply

Hello, I’ve noticed that I cannot create a Universal Security Groups in active directory. Local and Global groups are still a possibility but the radio button for Universal is greyed-out. Does anyone know if it is a policy setting, a registry change, or something else which is preventing me from creating a universal security group? If so, how do I get the capability to create Universal security groups back? Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

security log filling with events 538/540/576
by Guest Brad- 1 reply

We just set up a new SBS 2003 premium server and we're getting a lot of events 538/540/576 in the security log, I just counted 140 entries in 4 minutes. We have Symantec Endpoint small business 11.0 installed on the server and MozyPro (an online backup utility). Exchange, IIS, and SQL 2005 are also running and there are 6 client PCs. I've tried shutting down the services for SQL server, Symantec, and MozyPro to see if that stopped/slowed the events and that didnt seem to have an effect. Is turning off the auditing for those events the only solution? here are some sample entries: ****************************************** Event Category: Logon/L…

Map and rename network drive ?
by Guest chrbar- 0 replies

Hi, I've used a script in the past, but I don't remember it! It was a logon script which maps network drives (to assign a choosen letter) and renames network drives (to assign a choosen name instead of the default name): Mapped drive with default name = temp$ on 'ghost1' (T:\) Mapped drive renamed = Temporary Files (T:\) Do you know the script lines to do that? Thanks, Chris

Server 2003 - System process hogging CPU
by Guest ctech- 0 replies

We are using Windows Server 2003 and in the past couple of days the System process has been taking about 50% of the CPU. I am using a program called "Process Explorer" but can't nail down what is actually causing this. Prior the System process was only using about 5% of the CPU. There have been no addionational software or hardware changes recently. This is causing some network file sharing to be sluggish. Any help in pointing me in the right direction to try find the issue that is causing this would be appreciated.

WinRM installation and IIS
by Guest TripleSticks- 1 reply

This may not be the appropriate forum for this question, so if it isn't I apologize ahead of time. Any help in what forum it belongs in would be appreciated. We have been prototyping an application with WinRM and have been very happy with it's capabilities. However, it seems to require IIS be running on the Windows 2003 Server that you are attempting to manage. After re-reading the System Requirements on the download page and looking through the MS WinRM information I see no mention of this anywhere. However, if you look at the WinRM service it clearly has a dependency on the IIS Admin Service. We are trying to manage member servers that don't have…

Strange Registry and eventlog issue
by Guest Adam Simmonds (SimAda00)- 0 replies

I noticed quite recently that my machine goes alittle strange. I started getting event 333 errors in the system event log. This occured a few times and was resolved by a restart, how ever now if i enter the registry (regedit) and either search or browse. it seems to then cause these errors and at the latest attempt it has corrupted eventlogs. Aswell as this happening, now when the machine is shutting down, it completes shutdown tasks and the little Windows is shutting down screen goes away but it sits their for about 5 minutes with the hd light on constantly, it may be longer i havnt bothered timing it. I would rather not have to reinstall this mach…

Using Win2k3 Routing and Remote Access Server I have a typical network setup with LAN 192.168.1.0/24 and WAN 60.10.20.152/29 Outgoing network traffic is being mapped to 60.10.20.154. In RRAS, how do I change this so that outgoing traffic is mapped to .155 instead? All other public addresses are using for incoming use only. thanks, gkelly

installing drivers for WinXP x86 on Win2008x64 print server cluste
by Guest accudave- 0 replies

We are in the process of trying to migrate our existing network printers over to a new, purpose-built Windows 2008 x64 cluster. We've got the two new cluster nodes in a cluster, and have installed the print server service without errors. We can add drivers for the printer(s) on the cluster node, and print test pages from there. Fine so far. Our network clients are all x86 Windows XP. We want to install the necessary drivers on the clustered print server so that they are downloaded automatically, just as with our current Windows 2003 print server. I have been trying all day, searching online documentation, and searching the web, and I cannot find ou…

Automated System Recovery and USB Drive
by Guest Chowsman- 1 reply

I reviewed several different documents concerning the ASR feature. So once you implemented ASR you should have a floppy disk and a "bkf" file (on the local disk). My question is this? Can I copy the "bkf" to a USB drive for safe keeping? Let's say I have a server with one hard drive and the drive craps out, well the "bkf" file would be gone for good. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks, Dennis

Problem with DFS + subst (cmd) + rename network drive
by Guest chrbar- 0 replies
Hello, We use a DFS system to our network data (NT domain, Windows 2003). Thus instead of using "net use" to map some networks drives on the pc (Windows XP Pro SP2), we used the command "subst" (subst E: \\server\dfs_folder) in the logon script. But the substituted drives appear as "Disconnected Network Drive"! However, despite "Disconnected Network Drive", it works correctly, in the way we can access the network drive and its data. But it's a problem because users do not try to access to the data, thinking a network problem! Initially we planned to complete our script with a VBS to rename the network drive (to obtain a customized name): customi…

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -= my response to the. harassment -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- My first reaction in 1990/91 was to assume that if I broke contact. then they would not be able to follow. and would lose interest. Hello, I am trying to capture some good I/O metrics for my Server using the Physical Disk counter. We are trying to determine whether to purchase a iSCSI San for SQL or Fiber SAN. I am not convinved that we need to spend the money on a Fiber SAN and need some proof. I need to know some counters to measure on the Phsical disk and something to compare it to. Right now I am using Avg. Disk Queue Length Avg. Disk sec/Read Avg. Disk sec/Write Disk Reads/sec Disk Writes/sec Is there anything else I need? Also, where can I compare my averages and see if I am over my averages? Kev

Repair RAID5
by Guest Andrew- 0 replies

I have a Server 2003 which had 4 HDDs, 3 of which were in a software RAID5 (no RAID card) and 1 was unallocated spare. The first drive (disk 0) from the RAID 5 failed and had to be disconnected from the system. After disconnecting disk 0 and powering up the server, I would have expected to see (in Comp. Man.) that disk 0 was foreign (and missing), disk 1 & 2 were failed and disk 3 unallocated? Instead I have disk 0 foreign and missing, disk 1 failed and disk 2 unallocated. With a mystery missing disk! Does anyone have any hints on how to repair this? My first thought was to take the spare disk and connected it to the disk 0 position and see what …

My Documents permissions in Windows 2003

We have a terminal services environment, and everybody's 'My Documents' folder is redirected to a central location. When they log onto a Windows 2000 TS, they can right click and access the properties of that folder. When they long onto a Windows 2003, they can't right click on it. I am wondering what the permission difference could be? Thanks in advance, David
