Share a Mapped Drive

We have several rather simple NAS devices (specifically Terastations: http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/terastation/). Instead of having 15 different shares for our team and the users to remember (and remember what resources are on which one) What I want to do is create a single Windows file server that has a different share for each of these devices and simply acts as a passthrough. This will allow us to use this extra (RAID'd) storage while keeping the interface simple and consistent. Additionally, security is simplified/increased since: - we can put these devices on private IPs to ensure that they are only network accessible through …

Server install trouble
by Guest Kurt Anselmi- 1 reply

Hello all, While I was installing server on my system, I found a rather interesting development. While the system is still "collecting information" I get a DVD/CD device driver not found. I researched this throughout the past and into the Vista beta sites and found this to have been a problem before with Vista . I tried some of the so called work arounds, but still was not able to get past this. I am using an Asus P4C800 series mb, with an HP 840i DVD writer. The mb does have a Promise RAID feature, but I have disabled it, set it to ATI only, and run it as RAID. None of these options seem to work. I went to ASUS and downloaded drivers for w2k3 server an…

ADDUSER.EXE crashes
by Guest Robert Stokes- 1 reply

We are installing Windows 2003 Server Standard R2 onto a new machine for deployment into our network this weekend. No errors or issues on installation or general usage until we tried to run the Add New User wizard from the Server Management page when the system reports that ADDUSER.EXE has crashed. It mentions that it has been blocked by the DEP and we have tried turning this on and off without success. Thus we cannot create new users via this wizard. However... if you create a new user in AD Users and Groups it works ok so it's just related to the wizard functionality. Has anyone else had this problem and can they help us sort it by the weekend!? …

Basic WINS configuration question.
by Guest Purtech- 0 replies

I have two Server Standard 2003 R2 SP1 Domain Controllers. Lets say one Domain is xyz.com and the other lab.xyz.com. Full names: adminserver.xys.com and labserver.lab.xyz.com. A trust relationship flows from adminserver to labserver, but not the other way around. WINS was initially put on adminserver, then I started having errors that made me believe I needed WINS on labserver. Now both have WINS. DHCP exists only on adminserver and handles both domains. So...in the DHCP scopes do I make adminserver the Primary WINS and labserver Secondary? Does it matter? All the lab computer will wind up using adminserver as Primary WINS. Or should I install DHCP …

can ping server with fqdn but not with netbios name
by Guest Ehren- 8 replies

Hi- I have a very strange issue going on. I installed a new server today and added it to the domain as a member server for hosting user home directories. (Will replace our old slow and crappy server). I can access it just fine using \\servername\share from almost any computer I can come in contact with. However from both of our domain controllers the only way I can ping it or access its shares is by using the fqdn (\\servername.domain.edu.local\share) which is annoying. Both domain controllers serve as AD integrated DNS servers each with itself as its primary and the other as the secondary. ALl IP's are static. all the servers are plugged int…

I am trying to find an easy way (script) to gather the following information from a lot of servers (mostly 2003) REMOTELY : -Network Shares -Share Permissions -What Users/Groups are part of the Administrators group on the server I know I can do this manually with the Shares MMC snap-in, but I would really like to be able to run a script that outputs this information into an file that is easily imported into Excel. Any ideas?

WinServer2003: Telephony Service stops one second after starting
by Guest scooper- 1 reply

We have been using a Windows Server 2003 box as our VPN server for years. When it attempted to automatically install Service Pack 2 last week, it ran out of disk space on c:\. I then deleted a bunch of stuff, including some unused Windows components, then successfully updated to Service Pack 2. Now, everything works, except VPN. The Remote Access Service won't start, because it depends on the Telephony Service. When you start that service manually, it starts then stops one second later. If you set Telephony to automatic, the event log fills up with starts and stops once per second. I don't know if this is a result of SP2 (probably not) or the result…

Hi, After we installed Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter x64 on our server, when we log into the system using local administrator we are able to install software, however when we login as network administrator we are unable to install software. This situation didn't happen with Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. Not sure where to change the settings so that we can log in as network administrator to install the software.

Permissions causing performance problems
by Guest PJ- 0 replies

I am trying to run DotNetNuke (an ASP.NET 2.0 based content management system) on a Win2003 development machine, but I think I may have some sort of problem with permissions. I'm not really sure if this is a DNN issue, but more likely something I have misconfigured in Win2003. The install of DNN went fine, but the performance of the DNN install is extremely slow on the LAN, but apparently fine from outside. When I work on the site on the Win2003 machine the performance is still slow on my user account, but it runs fine on the machine's Administrator account. I'm not really a Win2003 admin expert, so I am not really sure where to look for this. Is it…

I'm located in the U.S. I have a share on a server in a different forest in China connected to us by a high speed WAN link. When I try to access the share by name I get prompted for credentials and can log on normally and access the shares. When I try to connect by IP I get the following error message "the system cannot find message text for message number 0x in the message file for \\10.10.128.1" I saw a microsoft article that referenced smart cards and I turned off the smart card authentication on my NIC. I also saw something that referenced smart cards and Windows 2000 SP4 which involved a hotfix, but this server is server 2003. Any ideas? A…

Identify what brings Win2k3 out of hibernation?
by Guest Shell- 2 replies

Hi, Is there any way to clearly identify what brings the machine out of hibernation? I'm running Win2k3 SBS SP2, and my machine wakes up randomly after I put it into hibernation. Wake on LAN is definitely disabled in BIOS and also in the PROSet properties for my NIC. The only EventLog entries are: Event Type: Information Event Source: Application Popup Event Category: None Event ID: 42 Date: 17-Jul-07 Time: 11:36:28 PM User: N/A Computer: XXXXXXXXXXXXX Description: The system was put into hibernation. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Data: 0000: 00 00 00 00 01 00 6c 00 ......l. …

Disaster Recovery Backup
by Guest Falcon1- 0 replies

Hi, I'm starting to plan our disaster recovery plan for our 2000 and 2003 servers and beside backing up the System State and making a ERD disks for each servers, having daily backups of the data, what else should I consider? I thought about backing up the C:\ drive so that we don't have to re-install all the applications. (System state, Program Files / WINNT and any other required folders been backed up at the sames time.) Would that allow a full restoration of a server with this? Am I missing anything else? Then I can move on to planning each application and what's the longest we can go wthout it and how long to restore from scratch or to troubleshoo…

I'm in the process of purchasing a new copy of (open value )Server 2003r2 and would like to use this license without having to rebuild the server. Is there a process to apply the new license I purchased to the existing evaluation copy? I intend to use the Exchanage server 2007 as well. Thank you

Remote backup server for disaster recovery
by Guest GerryA- 8 replies

I need some advice regarding a project to create a remote server that users can access in the event of a disaster that causes access to the main server to be unavailable. The scenario is that in the event of a pending disaster some employees will relocate and access the main server/office remotely. If this remote access becomes affected by the disaster then the users will switch to the alternate server in a remote location. I am looking for advice as to how best to configure the remote server, do i add it to the existing Domain and then restore the data to it? My current train of though is that the servers will not be linked after the original configurat…

Can no longer remote desktop to a 2003 server
by Guest just bob- 4 replies

After a reboot over the weekend our admins can no longer remote desktop to administer a 2003 DC server which is also our file/print server. I checked the event logs on the client and the server and there are no relevant entries. It is as if the RD service is not running but it is. No other problems with the server, it's running fine, our users are reporting no issues and again, the event log is clean. Any ideas? Thank you, -Bob

PDC Emulator FSMO role transition
by Guest Alan- 0 replies
Due to network upgrade our DC with the PDC emulator role will need to transition the FSMO role to a DC in another site. My question is this, will this: 1) Break the 2 way trusts established for legacy domains? 2) Can WINS be simply pointed to the other site for name resolution? 3) Are there any other caveats that I am overlooking. Any input is greatly appreciated. Alan

Hi All Here is the problem I work at a School with 700 students and 80 staff. We have numerous 2003 servers, but the main server "fileserver" holds all of the users main data. On this server we have 3 folders, 1: Students 2: Staff 3: Office on a 500 gig volume. In students are all the students home dirs, In Staff, the same, office is for admin docs etc. Active Directory is set up similar, Students OU's, Staff OU's etc. With sub directories as needed. Could you please advise how to set up Disk quotas on students only (say 500meg) that will not effect Staff or Office users on the same volume. Will setting a Group policy on th…
