Wacky Backup
by Guest Anteaus- 0 replies

I'm beginning to wonder just what this 2003 R2 server has been smoking? http://iwrconsultancy.co.uk/img/wacky.gif Backup using NTBackup applet, batch (top left) file clearly defines tape name, yet the program requests last Friday's tape to be inserted instead of the one stated. What's even stranger is that if the job is cancelled then manually relaunched via the exact-same batch file, second time around it runs normally. I guess one answer would be Backup Exec, but for small sites it's a tad costly.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -= my response to the. harassment -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- My first reaction in 1990/91 was to assume that if I broke contact. then they would not be able to follow. and would lose interest. So I did the things that have. been suggested by other people; I sold my television, stopped listening to the radio and tried. to withdraw away from the sources of abuse as much as possible. I reasoned. that they must have more important things to deal with and that normal people would simply leave. me alone if it were made difficult for them to continue their. harassment. I reckoned without the sheer vindictiveness. of t…

Hello, I am trying to capture some good I/O metrics for my Server using the Physical Disk counter. We are trying to determine whether to purchase a iSCSI San for SQL or Fiber SAN. I am not convinved that we need to spend the money on a Fiber SAN and need some proof. I need to know some counters to measure on the Phsical disk and something to compare it to. Right now I am using Avg. Disk Queue Length Avg. Disk sec/Read Avg. Disk sec/Write Disk Reads/sec Disk Writes/sec Is there anything else I need? Also, where can I compare my averages and see if I am over my averages? Kev

Domain Account Local Drive Mandatory Profile
by Guest ProtonJohn- 0 replies

Hello, I have been attempting to setup a mandatory profile for use with public access library systems. The is a domain service account. I would like to have the mandatory profile copy the profile from the local computer drive, instead of a network location, each time the system logs into the dekstop. Is this possible? I understand a domain account can have a mandatory profile stored on a network server and a local account can have a mandatory profile stored on the local drive. I need the domain account to use a locally computer stored mandatory profile. I have tried some of these: "c:\profiles" and "%systemroot%\profiles" in the domain account pr…

Multiple Connections for Mapped Drives
by Guest cvogel- 1 reply

I have situation at a site where we have login scripts mapping a "home" folder for users that create a "W:" . This mapping seems to lock access back to the server when I try to access the server with the administrator account while still being logged on as the user on the local machine. As soon as I disconnect the "w:" I can then authenticate to the server as administrator. Steps I have taken: 1.) reset permissions on the users shared home folder. 2.) deleted local profile 3.) checked "open shares" on server to make sure the account does not already have a file or directory open or locked. There are 7 or 8 other mapped drives in the users profil…

Cannot Run Executable (.BAT) File From Remote Location
by Guest Ole Weigelt- 0 replies

Hi everybody, the situation is as follows: (please excuse wrong wording, I have the German version, I try my best) 2 servers, both on W2k3 Fileserver (FS) and Terminalserver (TS) On FS, there is a share 'NETLOGON' on a directory called 'Scripts' in which the NETLOGON.BAT is located. I think, this is basic knowledge on W2k3 in German and English versions, isn't it? In my ActiveDirectory (AD), I have an Organisational Unit (OU) that contains a group (GP) as well as the users. Now, I am logged in as the (preconfigured) user 'Administrator' (Admin). I have given full access to the Group of Administrators and my GP in Security settings AND Access…

I am a perflib event id: 2003 warning on a couple of my win2003 servers. Event id: 2003 Source: Perflib The configuration information of the performance library "C:\WINDOWS\system32\aspperf.dll" for the "ASP" service does not match the trusted performance library information stored in the registry. The functions in this library will not be treated as trusted. I tried article 267831 (even though it said for win2k) but didn't help. Any ideas? thanks in advance.

I am running Windows Server 2008, and I have tried to share my desktop, as I use it to drop files etc. from my laptop. When I share it, the system says it is shared. But if I bring up Network, then click on the shares for my Server, Desktop is not shown (other shares are). Why is this? Thanks!

Move Certificate authority from DC to member server
by Guest youngny- 0 replies
Hi, In my current environment I've 3DC running windows 2003 SP1, one dc is running Certificate authority and it is also running IAS. My goal is to remove CA from the DC and install it on a member server and remove IIS from the DCs to improve the security of the DCs. We are using IAS for the wireless client authentication. The current certificate which is installed on the clients will expire next year in April. Are there any guidelines to remove CA from DC to a member server. Should I leave IAS on the DC or move it to a member server. I've read it is better to leave IAS on a DC for performence reasons. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Network Software
by Guest SPG- 0 replies

A while back in some online publication I read where an Administrator said that every morning he ran a network scan that inventoried all workstations hardware and software, and that it would flag any workstation that had a change in either the hardware or software. This, he said, is how he discovered some malware that was installed on 30 machines overnight. I just installed Softinventive's Total Network Inventory and am still learning it, when I have the time. But, does anyone know of any network scan software that will flag any changes in workstations (both hardware and software). Thanks, Sam

I ordered an 8 processor, 32gig RAM server from Dell today and the pre- sales rep told me that Win2K8 x64 Standard was limited to having 4gig of memory per VM with standard and that to go above 4 gig I'd need the Enterprise version of Win2K8. I hadn't heard this before, is he correct? Thanks!

I have a weird problem that I hope somebody can shed some light on. I have a W2K3 SP2 Standard Edition DC and when I set the user account option "User must change password at next logon" the user is not prompted to change their password during the next logon session. I must login at least once, then logout. The next time after the logout I will be prompted to change the password. Any ideas?

Problem with connecting to Windows Server 2003
by Guest Ashelon- 0 replies

Hi. I have a server running Win Server 2003, with domain and AD. Occassionally, internal users have been complaining that they cannot access the shared drive on the server. Whenever they try to access it as a mapped network drive (which previously worked) or from Network Neighbourhood, it prompts them for a username and password. Using the same credentials do not work because the login box will say "The username you typed is the same as the username you logged in with..." Logging out of windows and logging in again at the client PCs usually solve the problem, but not always. Whenever they come into the office in the morning, they usually can access the…

.Net Frameworks - Any Negative Impacts?
by Guest Wayne Fontes- 1 reply
I have a Windows Server 2003 development server that we use to hose a bunch of internal web servers. The box is about 4 years old but does the trick. A developer on my team wants to install .Net frameworks 3.0 and 3.5. All web services are using only 2.0 and I see no point in installing framework that we may need someday. It's true that we will eventually use more WCF and need it then, but not yet. When I shared my thoughts, I was asked "what's the harm?". To do this I didn't have a good answer. I'm a developer as well and by no means a system admin. Does anyone out there know of any negative impacts on performance or anything else when having .Net fr…

I'm trying to configure a DC to an external source using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042/en-us I am getting event logs Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from manually configured peer 131.107.13.100,0x1 after 8 attempts to contact it. This peer will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new peer with this DNS name. We have a vendor that manages our firewall and we put in a request yesterday to open the ntp port and the ip addresses to allow both in and out, but I have a feeling somewhere someone made a typo. I get this error on the two addresses I am using for ntp. Is there a way …

Re: Winlogon Memory Leak
by Guest bfloeagle- 0 replies

Re: Winlogon Memory Leak Sorry for resurrecting such an old post but this is very close to what I am experiencing as well (my problem is with CPU usage, instead of memory). My production servers are remote and accessed via RDP. We frequently seeing the winlogon.exe process taking up huge amount of CPU usage (up to a core of a multi-core box) and the only solution to free the core back up for normal use is to reboot the server. The winlogon process is always tied to a disconnected RDP session that fails to reset. As an added bonus, the console RDP port AND the physical port fail to respond (we sit at a grey screen after we logon, almost like the explorer do…

Faxes not storing in "My Company Web"
by Guest Nick- 0 replies

Having run the Fax configuration Wizard, and selected the desired routing destinations, I notice that the faxes are not storing on the company web page as requested. ('Store in Document Library') The other routing parameters are stored (Print, and store in a folder) I select the routing destination for the "Incoming Faxes" folder within the Document Library, and it accepts it, but after finishing the wizard and then running through it again, the only option unchecked is the "Store in Document Library" again. The rest are as previously set. Once again, any suggestions would be appreciated. Tks
