Domain change and orphaned digital signatures
by Guest UrJac- 0 replies
Due to a company merger we have to change our domain; all servers, no exceptions. We have been using the Certificate Authority to create digital signature-enabled authorizations on a huge number of change forms (PDFs) for the past year. Our fear is that there will be no way to prove the authenticity of these signatures after the domain change, as the CA will be under the new domain, essencially a different CA. Any creative ideas on how to prove the authentication after the domain change will be very appreaciated.

Workstation loses default printer
by Guest Edward- 0 replies

Our environment: 200 users, 50 printers (I know that ratio is ridiculous but I am stuck with it) I am using Server 2003 R2's Print Manager and I am pushing printers to users in security groups through the console and pushing the "pushprinterconnections.exe" file as a logon policy in a GPO. All of that works wonderfully. All users are XP Pro with SP2 and are updated weekly through WSUS Problem: Users get a random error when they go to print to their default printer: "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup." This will be to a printer that they successfully printed to before. If they click print again they can usually print…

JdiskReport

Is there a utility like JDiskReport (http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/) available on Windows Server 2003 Standard? If not, should I install JDiskReport? One question I have is whether Java is already installed on the server. How can I tell? It is not listed in Add/Remove programs. Another question is whether I should install Java. I think not if it is just for this application. It's a great application that I use on my own computers, but I keep the server as pristine as possible, for obvious reasons.

Hi, I'm developing an application in PERL that runs over w2003 servers in different languages (spanish, english and french, overall). Depending on the system language the application does different things. Does anybody know how can I guess the system language in a W2003 server?? Is there any record in the system registry with this information?? Does anybody know a function in PERL to get this information?? Thanks.

Logoff Script Running but not Applying
by Guest nevets2001uk- 0 replies

I have a weird problem with my logoff script that disables our proxy setting in IE. The script runs because the popup dialog is displayed at logoff but the proxy is enabled even when logging in outside of the domain. However if I manually run the script it removes the settings which remains unchecked when outside of the domain (as we would like to occur). Scipts below... LOGON SCRIPT CODE Option Explicit On Error Resume Next 'DECLARE VARAIBLES Dim objWshShell Set objWshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") '<<<<< PROXY >>>>>>> objWshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Interne…

CI files growing and reducing C drive disk space
by Guest lmhaggblom@besafeandfree.org- 0 replies
- 291 views
On Monday, 09/29/08, my Windows Server 2003 system told me I was low on system resources, and when I checked, I only had 700 MB of 12 GB left of free disk space when I should of had 2.27 GB free space. The problem was the "CIfiles" folder, which held a 500 MB .ci file. The number in the file name was also on three other files, but they were small. The windows.edb file was 1GB. So, we stopped the Windows Search service, deleted all four "CIfiles" folder files with the filename of the 500 MB, and emptied the recycle bin. Then, the windows.edb file shrunk and the disk space increased back to 2.27 GB free space. We restarted the Windows Search service, and this…

print job with long path name fails
by Guest Mark Warbeck- 0 replies
Hi all, I have a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain. When people print a PDF from a web browser, the path to the file as seen in the print queue is quite long (C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temporary internet files\<random_folder_name\file.pdf). These jobs stick in the queue and the status says "printing-printing error". The printer (print device in MS jargon) shows no activity, no data light). Usually someone else tries to print and jobs back up. If I cancel the offending job, all the others print. The printer is connected to the server via LPR ports and a 10BaseT network. It happens on a number of printers, most recent…

ASR functionality

Hi, I have a Windows 2003 SBS server that has run out of space on all its drives and need to either change the drives or supply them with a new server. My first thought is the new server and start again from scratch but before I go down that line is it possible to change the drives on the existing server and set it up with bigger partitions and then do an ASR recovery into the new partition? If so do I need to use an hardware partition for example using an IBM serveraid card or can I use a Windows Partition, would the Windows partition be overwritten? Thanks for your help. anthony

Windows shutdown/logoff interrupt script
by Guest Wendy- 0 replies

Did you ever find a solution to your wish to cancel a shutdown/logoff request if there are specific processes running? I am trying to implement the same fix on our automation servers and happened onto your discussion. So far, I'm leaning toward loading PSTools on each server and writing a script that utilizes PsList to verify that none of the critical processes are running but I would like to know what options you (or anyone else reading this) came across. Thanks, Wendy

Disaster Recovery model with minimal down-time
by Guest Lito Kusnadi- 0 replies

Hi, I am trying to collect some ideas for disaster recovery model suitable for my environment. Hopefully someone can give me hints on this. I have a blade server with SAN running windows 2000 server SP4 as 2nd-ary DNS, fileserver, and print server in active directory environment. I got shipment of a server (stand alone, not blade) from the parent company, with quite big hard drives (1Tb). Due to plan changes, the server is available for "anything". I was thinking to utilise this server as disaster recovery server. I was thinking a way to incorporate the disaster recovery that could be tailored to my current environment with minimal configuration (hopi…

Re: How to schedule a reboot in Windows Server 2003

Re: How to schedule a reboot in Windows Server 2003 Hi, I have the same need as well. To answer your question of why I would want to schedule a restart....... I need to schedule a restart in order to finalize Windows updates after all users have disconnected from the server and all backups have completed. This will be useful in getting the updates completed without inconveniencing the network users by waiting for a reboot during server access hours. Thanks, Matt 'Miha Pihler [MVP Wrote: > ;2036513']Hi Mark, > > There is a command line tool that comes with Windows Server 2003 -- so > you > don't need any 3rd party or resource ki…

Handle count
by Guest Brion- 0 replies
We have 2 Windows 2003 fileservers. They are clustered, and this problem seems to impact them both. The handle count is enormous - it grows in a stepping sort of fashion until it reaches about 25,000 or so, then the server starts complaining about not being able to allocate from the shared pool, and then within a day or so after that it dies (if we don't reboot it first). Digging in a bit further, it looks like the System process is the one that is consuming all those handles and not closing them. Again, over time, the graph looks like a stair case. I ran Handle.exe, and many of the files do look like legitimate files that users actually have open. B…

SAN setup for File Server

I realize this isn't necessarily Microsoft related so if someone know of a better group please let me know. I figured though there still had to be users here who have input... Thanks I have an IBM DS300 iSCSI SAN that I'm trying to figure out the best set up and utilization for our File Server so I can max out our available space. We have 14 possible drives to use can perform either Raid 0,1,5,10,50. We have gone with 3 arrays (4 drives, 4 drives, 3 drives) of Raid 5 with 3 hot swaps, 1 per array. Anyone have any better suggestions? I'd like to go to using Raid 50 however, with IBM it seems it Parities out space when creating the Array and then again wh…

I ordered an 8 processor, 32gig RAM server from Dell today and the pre- sales rep told me that Win2K8 x64 Standard was limited to having 4gig of memory per VM with standard and that to go above 4 gig I'd need the Enterprise version of Win2K8. I hadn't heard this before, is he correct? Thanks!

hello everyone, I need to get a good price on an external connector license for windows 2003/2008. Can anyone recommend a good reseller? I have seen on some posts that it should cost in the region of $2000 but here in England I don't seem to be able to get a quote for less than £1600 (over $3000)... Thank you in advance for your time.
