Hi, I just installed the Windows Server 2003 R2 on a newly bought Asus machine, it was all fine until the installation of the Windows Server 2003 SP2. There was an error message saying something like can't copy linkinfo.dll. I'm not sure what could've been wrong with my new server, please give me some advice. Thanks for help. Jason

Tweaking system guide

Of everything you can do to optimize Windows XP, one of the simplest is just to use it. As you launch and exploit applications, Windows observes your behavior and updates a dynamic file called Layout.ini. After every three days, when it senses that the computer is idle, it rearranges the locations of programs on the system hard drive to optimize their launch and execution. http://windows-xp-tricks.blogspot.com/

My "people" here don't want to be part of a domain; they insist on logging on to their local machines and mapping drives across to the server. Any suggestions to automatically backup their local My Documents Folder to a directory on the server ? Thanks Mike

Local\Domain login problem
by Guest Barkingdog- 3 replies

Setting: client: Windows XP, Sp2. IE7 Browser-based used with app that supports "Single Sign On" (SSO) SSO works well for all users in Domain Group except for one (say Bob). When Bob accesses the app via browser it asks him to type his Windows credentials. He does this and he is in. If Bob logs in to another computer and starts the same app he is NOT asked to log in (so SSO is working there.). I noted on Bob's computer (where he has trouble) that the username in the login box appears as <local machine name>.<FQDN domain name>\bob. Any ideas on this one much appreciated. TIA, Barkingdog

Disk performance monitoring

The description of the Physical disk\current disk queue length perfmon counter indicates it should be no more than 1.5 to 2 times the number of spindles that make up the disk. Quite the argument has broken out among my co-workers, two SAn vendors, and myself over how to interpret this. does this mean that if we have 48 spindles in a disk group this counter can be as high as 98 without indicating a problem?

Functional Level

Hi I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 running at Interim level and acting as a Domain Controller. I have read that this is only used if you have NT4 Domain Controllers on the network as well as 2003. I have a Win2k SP2 server running as a File/Application Server on my network. Will this be affected if I raise the functional level on the 2003 server? Thanks TJ

Windows Home Server - Remote Access to computers not supported on this operating system (Vista "Premium") I purchased a HP Windows Home Server system, where one of the advertised features enables you to remotely connect to the desktop of your home computers. I have the WHS system setup, and can access the (WHS) server remotely (from outside my network), however all the computers on my home network are listed as: Windows Vista Home Premium Edition - * Not supported on this operating system. I understand the Remote Desktop Connection (host) is crippled in the Vista "Premium" version, however I was under the impression (via all the adver…

Home Server Backup - XP Laptop Hibernate
by Guest TimBo- 1 reply

Hi, I have the HP MediaSmart versionof WHS, and so far, so good, I have been please with what it delivers. It meets my needs for a simple home server solution. The backup causes a slight problem, however. If I hibernate my Laptop (XP Home Edition SP2) the WHS backup wakes it up, performs the backup, and SHOULD then hibernate the Laptop - but it doesn't, so I keep finding the Laptop running when it shouldn't be. Anyone else found had this problem, and know of a fix? Also, is there a way to change the Workgroup name? All tips and pointers gratefully received, Thanks Tim

Hi, We have a new internet connection with 5 ip adresses. We also have a webserver in dmz with one of that 5 ip adresses. But now it's not possible to surf to out website from a internal computer. If i add the weburl and the internal ip adress in the hosts file then it's works fine. But we have lots of computers here, is it possible to make a policy on a sbs2003 server that applied all the hosts files on the computer? Or is there another solution (maybe a translation in dns or something..) that i can setup to resolve the internal ip?? Greetz, Tom
