We have a small lab network with a Windows 2000 (SP4) server. There are about 15 machines on the network, most running Win2000 (SP4), a couple of XP machines, and 4 Linux boxes. About a week ago, some users were unable to access the shared drives in the server. In the event log was the following: No license was available for user lab\MrUser using product SMB server 5.0 Event 201 The product view tab of the licensing tool displayed the following: Product: Windows Server Per seat purchase: 0 Per seat allocated: 0 Per server purchased: 24 Per server allocated: -105 (yes, negative 105) MS KB 103138 seems to address this issu…

Print Server Advertizement Problems
by Guest stosti- 2 replies

I have three companies all connected by IPSec VPN. We are all on the same domain. Each building has a domain controller. Building A is the main headquarters. The print queues are on the fileserver (member server) there. Building B and C have a single server that is acting as there domain controller and file/print server. Everything is working fine except when you go to add a new printer I only see the printers in the main headquarters. If I reboot the domain controllers in building B or C the printer show up for a period of time and then drop off. I have restarted the print spooler in each location but this does not help. I have done this before w…

Windows 2003 Standard Server. This is a new Server bought from Dell and do not know where else to look for support. I am trying to set up users and therefore change user passwords. I cannot and get the message "Windows cannot complete the pwrd. Password does not meet the password policy requirements etc." I have checked the policy in domain controller Securtity Settings and they we all not defined. So I have tried by defining and following the rules. Still cannot change a password. Have looked on Microsoft website and downloaded a hotfix and still no luck. Can anybody help? I would think a new install on a new server would not give me this anoun…

Migration errors and Domain Rename questions
by Guest David T- 0 replies

I have 2 Windows 2003 domains with a 2-way trust established. I am trying to use ADMT to migrate one domain into the other. The domains share the same namespace, however in actuality they are not part of the same tree. I think this is part of the problem. The domains are "abc.local" (#1) and "md.abc.local" (#2). I can make the administrator of #1 a member of the domain admins in #2 but can not make the administrator of #2 a member of the domain admins in #1. I am considering renaming #2 to "md.local" so they don't share the same namespace. (1) Would this solve my ADMT problem? (2) In a domain rename, are the local user profiles migrated (i.e., when…

Domain Trusts and synch of roaming profiles
by Guest pete0085- 3 replies

Can we add a 2nd domain controller in Branch 2 (branch2.mycompany.com) so that the users there would login to that domain instead of logging into the domain across the WAN? With a lot of staff moving between branch 1 and branch 2, could we synchronize the roaming profiles from the User Profile folders between the 2 domain controllers so they would still have the same desktop and settings if they logged on to the Branch1 Domain or the Branch2 domain. If we added a DC in branch 3 too, could we synchronize roaming profiles between the three? I think we would somehow need to replicate all the user accounts and groups to the new DC, because of all o…

Wierd roaming profile problem
by Guest user 76- 4 replies

Hi all, I'm getting a really odd roaming profile issue that only affects one user when they use one particular pc. When they log off, the roaming profile doesn't get updated on the server. However, if they log onto another machine, the roaming profile gets copied down and back OK and if I log on to the problem machine with a test account, the roaming profile gets copied down and back OK. The users permissions are no different to all of the other users who do not have any problems. Machines are a mix of 2K/XP, server is 2003 R2. User is only using 2K workstations. Any thoughts? Bill

SMTP Smart Host No longer connects!
by Guest Joel- 3 replies

In the past, without particularly understanding how it works I've had fairly good luck setting up an smtp service on a win2k3 machine so that some applications we use could successfully send out emails for notifications. I've always defined a smart host on the default smtp site properties. Well, it seems that in one location the email notifications stopped working a few months ago. And now I'm trying to figure out how to get it working again and why it stopped working in the first place. In order to do this I need to first figure out where the problem is and on whose network the problem actually is. Our server is located on our customer's site and the…

Volume Shadow Copy Doesn't run - set in schedule.
by Guest boe- 1 reply

Hello, I'm running Windows 2003 R2 X64 SP2. I look at services and VS is set for automatic. No copies are made at the scheduled time. I notice even though it is set for automatic it isn't running so I right click and start the service. I check and the VS copies aren't made at the scheduled time - daily each volume is different - about 15 minutes starting at 6:45 AM - (we start work about 9:30 AM) Backups complete around 5:30 AM. I click on create now and it will make a VS copy of that volume. Each volume is set to enable - I tried disabling, setting a new shedule and enabling - no luck. I check the event view but don't see any errors…

Will this be a problem especially on DHCP leases?

Win2K3 SBS SP2 + all MS updates (single server in the domain) RAID 1 250 GB primary SATA drives 2 - 300GB USB external drives Exchange Server 2003 SP2+ on drive C SQL 2005 SP2 (lightly used) on drive C also. SQL DBs not on drive C but are off the internal SATA RAID drives - on one of the USB drives. Chkdsk on all volumes (chkdsk not chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r) comes back fine after receiving this message in the File Replication Event Log. Note: we have a 750GB RAID 1 MaxtorOne external drive attached to the system and removed it due to NTFS file corruption issues. We then rebooted the Win2K3 SBS server and received this error.] Is this a critical error or…

DVD Burner not compatible with 2003 server?
by Guest Tom- 1 reply

I just installed a fresh copy of SBS 2003 using a DVD burner to load the windows disks. After windows was installed I noticed that no CD's were being read properly by the DVD burner. I replaced the DVD burner with a regular CDROM drive and the disks were reading fine. Figuring I had a bad DVD burner, I purchased a brand new one and installed it only to find the problem also occured with the new burner. Is there some type of compatibility issue here with windows? The DVD burner is dual layer if that makes any difference. Please help. Thanks
