WinServer2003: Telephony Service stops one second after starting
by Guest scooper- 1 reply

We have been using a Windows Server 2003 box as our VPN server for years. When it attempted to automatically install Service Pack 2 last week, it ran out of disk space on c:\. I then deleted a bunch of stuff, including some unused Windows components, then successfully updated to Service Pack 2. Now, everything works, except VPN. The Remote Access Service won't start, because it depends on the Telephony Service. When you start that service manually, it starts then stops one second later. If you set Telephony to automatic, the event log fills up with starts and stops once per second. I don't know if this is a result of SP2 (probably not) or the result…

Wireless Connection

Hi, I've just got a new laptop running Vista. On my old PC I connected to the net with a DSL modem. I am not very computer literate, so when I switched on my laptop, and done all the setup, this message came up that I was connected to the Internet, as I had no modem attached I thought this weird, so I done a bit of digging and came up with a list of networks, and found I was connected to a Linksys public connection, could anyone please explain this connection to me, and will it harm my laptop. I have no wireless router. Thank you in advance for your help.

wireless problem after SP2

Hello, I am the not-so-knowledgeable-about-server-2003 network admin for a small charter school. I just updated to server 2003 SP2. All my students computers are wireless. If I log on as a domain admin on a student computer, no problem. If I log on as a student, the wireless connection will coneect and then drop, over and over again. Happens on more than one computer. Students have a different group policy applied to them. If I take the user out of the student group and make him a domain admin it works fine. Something in the student Group Policy? I have looked but nothing jumps out at me as possibly being the culprit. Please help, this is driving me crazy! …

We are going to purchase w2k8 server here soon.. right now we are running a trial edition without hyper-v (thats what the version said when we downloaded it) but my question is why are there two versions? With and Without hyper-v? i thought hyper-v was still in beta? and thought it was going to also be in all standard / ent editions? does it cost more for it? will all versions get it when its done? what should I look for when purchasing? because I have two options, with and without, and strangely with costs less?!... I'm so confused...

WM_EndSession
by Guest Bill- 0 replies

I have an older MFC application that runs as a service with a UI. When we get the QueryEndSession event we always return a true. Then when we get the EndSession event we Unsubclass all of the non-MFC windows per the Kowledge Base article 164166. This has worked for us all the way up through the Server 2003 Std Ed and Ent Ed, but has seemed to stop working on Server 2003 R2 release. On the R2 release we are recieviing a true with the WM_EndSession message on the first logoff , but if you logon again and then attempt a second logoff we are getting a false and the logoff is canceled. -- Bill

WMI ADAP errors with DotNet 3.5 - KB951683
by Guest Kieran- 0 replies

Hi, We're experiencing symptom 3, Message 2 in the knowledge base article with some of our servers and were wondering if there's a fix that's going to be released. While the text of the KB advises its going to be in the next service pack, the fix wasn't credited as being in 3.5 SP1 as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951847. Can someone from MS please advise if it is included, but not credited otherwise we'll have to work with MS support to get the hotfix talked about in the original KB article. Cheers, Kieran

Getting quite a few WMI errors . I did not check to see if these errors were present before the upgrade, but I did look after upgrading the server to 4GB of RAM. The /PAE switch is in the boot.ini, but seems to make no difference whether or not that switch is present. Some samples of errors are... Open the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Services, Computers, My Computer, DCOM Config. Click yes on any prompts to record AppID data Click Start / Run and type wbemtest, click connect twice to confirm WMI is working properly. If it is not, Restart and retest.

WMI Problem

[also posted on microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.wmi] I have .NET 2.0 SP1, .NET 3.0 SP1 and .NET 3.5 running on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, fully patched. It is NOT a DC. I have some WMI errors that apparently need .NET 3.5 SP1 (which isn't out yet, and I've tried but can't get the hotfix that will correct the problem), and am hoping that .NET 3.5 with n o errros in the WMI Diagnostic utility will do the trick. I ran it just now and it came back with a statement that WMI is operating correctly. However, the .txt file that was generated had some errors that I feel I should fix. However, I haven't a clue on how to do it in WMIMGMT.MSC. Here's the errors…

WMI to remote machine
by Guest AndyS- 3 replies

Hi, I have 2 2003 servers, one local and is a member of a domain, the other is remote (in another country) and is only on a workgroup. I have some monitoring software which can use WMI to retrieve the windows log events. I can't get this to work so I have been trying to diagnose the problem. I have disabled firewalls at both ends, both machines have a public static ip address. I can run wbemtest on the remote machine ok and wmidiag, but when I run wbemtest on the loacl machine and try to connect to the remote machine it says "0x800706b9 Not enough resources are available to complete this operation" Strange when the resources are vast on both machines. WMIC question

I don't see a specific group for WMIC questions so I'm trying this one.... I'm trying/playing with WMIC for the first time. I want to see a list of installed software on a local computer, and output the list to an html file. In a batch file I have these commands: wmic /node:server01 os assoc /output:c:\test\output.htm /format:htable The batch file runs and the list of installed software scrolls by on the screen but, the batch file ends with 2 error messages, both saying: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. What is wrong with my syntax? Thanks

Workaround for a possible bug
by Guest Wowbagger- 0 replies

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but it was definitely an irritation. Workaround included. My server (2003) runs a script several times a day that pulls files off of a remote FTP site. It downloads the files into a temporary directory, then sorts them accordingly. It turns out that the permissions from the -remote ftp server- were being retained during the download, which was preventing people from being able to use the files locally. This behavior goes against every scrap of documentation that I have been able to locate, but the permissions set by the -remote ftp server- were being retained. I even followed the directions in http://support.microso…
