Workgroup / Application Question
by Guest AlvinG- 1 reply

This is more of an applications question, but thought I'd throw it out here. I have a small workgroup of about 30 computers running XPPro, which are physically connected to a large network for Internet access only. > This workgroup is a computer lab used to help users prepare personal documents which contain confidential information. A typical course usually runs about 4 weeks, so one group of users move on after 4 weeks, and then another group starts. During the 4 week period, users save their information to the local drive, which is no security at all because all computers are configured with the same logon and no password. Instructors need to…

Workgroup computer accessing a Domain server??
by Guest Scott- 3 replies

Hi, I've just started playing with SBS 2003 and have setup a test server. Most of my network experience has been using just plain old workgroups so I'll apologize now for any dumb questions :-). Anyway, my question is this. I've got a few computers on my network that are all setup as a workgroup and the test sever is a domain. I've added usernames to the server for each of the workstations, shared a drive on the server and all the workstations seem to be able to access the share with no problems. Now, will there be any major issues accessing this server if I DON'T setup the workstations to be on the domain?? Thanks, Scott......

Workgroup computer not able to access domain resources
by Guest Rocky- 1 reply

Hi, I have a new windows 2003( r2 sp2) domain called engineering.lan. It consists of 1 domain controller and one member server named prodserver which is the member of the new domain. Prodserver has the file server role with all the company's shares on it. All desktop computers are on the domain and can access resources on prodserver. The problem is that we have notebooks which are in a workgroup called engineering. Notebook users have the same account name and password as that of their domain account however they are prompted to enter their credentials every time they try to access a share on prodserver. I have double checked that the notebook …

Workgroup Question

I have a server running Server 2003 Standard that I want to set up for a small group of computers running WinXP Pro for file sharing purposes. I want to leave the server and computers in a workgroup, rather than adding them to my domain. Question: If I create a unique workgroup on the server, is there a way to add some type of security to that workgroup that would prevent users from adding unauthorized or unwanted computers to that workgroup? Some what like joining a computer to a domain which has to be done with an account with proper rights. Thanks

Workgroup question - shared folder
by Guest JohnB- 0 replies

I have as a client a small company that is setup with Windows for Workgroups. The other day they added a new PC on their own. In the past they always used, as the local username, first initial and last name. This time though, they used firstname and lastname, with a space in between. I need to setup a user folder on the server (W2K Server) for them. I add the user, add the folder, and setup the permissions for the folder. From the PC they can see the folder but not get into it. On the folder share, Everyone has Full permissions. On the specific user folder, only the new user account and the local admin accounts have permissions (Full). I am gu…

Workgroup users get disconnected - Server reboot to reconnect
by Guest chigrboy- 0 replies

I have a workgroup at a remote location that periodically, everyone gets disconnected from the server (at the same time) and work grinds to a halt. The only recourse is to reboot the server to get everyone working again. And... this has to be fixed pronto. Here's the rundown of the network: 1. The network is shared with other companies - we have or own gateway/internet connection (this is new as of yeasterday so this is not related). 2. Each company has 1 or more WorkGroup servers (no domain controllers) 3. We have 13 people in our workgroup 4. Our Server: Dell SC1430 (New) 4 GBs RAM Plenty of HD space Windows server 2003 R2 SP2 …

Workstation authentication

My server is a Windows 2K3 Server Enterprise. We have another Windows 2K3 DC. Why is it that when I reboot my server that I cannot gain access to other workstations using Remote Access? As soon as the server boots up, I have immediate access. I assumed that the other DC would handle authentication when the primary server is offline. Thanks

While I was out on vacation one of my techs rebooted my one of our Win Server 2003 Webservers. Now Active Directory is not functioning. I get a Workstation Driver not installed Error. When trying to Start the Workstation Service (which is set to auto) I get Could not start the Workstation Service on the Local Computer Error 1075: The Depending Service doesn't exist or has been marked for deletion. When looking at depended services they are are all there. When I try and start one like RPC I get an error of 1068: The dependancy service or group failed to Start Could not start the remote Procedure call (RPC) locator Service. I have already checked ad…

Workstation hangs when logging off or shutting down - Windows Server2003

We have Windows Server 2003 R2 and multiple workstations all running XP Pro SP2. After logging into the domain and then trying to log out, the computer hangs on "Saving your settings". So far this is only occurring on one computer. If I use a different computer, the system logs off just fine. Another website recommended Microsoft UPHclean, but that didn't help. Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Workstation loses default printer
by Guest Edward- 0 replies

Our environment: 200 users, 50 printers (I know that ratio is ridiculous but I am stuck with it) I am using Server 2003 R2's Print Manager and I am pushing printers to users in security groups through the console and pushing the "pushprinterconnections.exe" file as a logon policy in a GPO. All of that works wonderfully. All users are XP Pro with SP2 and are updated weekly through WSUS Problem: Users get a random error when they go to print to their default printer: "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup." This will be to a printer that they successfully printed to before. If they click print again they can usually print…

Experts, I am running Windows 2003 Server SP2, and on this machine, I cannot get the Workstation service to start automatically (thoug the service is set to start automatically). Once the machine boots up, I can log in and start the service from the services panel manually without any problems. I checked the dependencies, and this service is not dependent on any other service. Understandably, other services that are dependent on Workstation do not start up either. The Error log lists the following two entries: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7009 Date: 8/6/2008 Time: 10:12:12 AM User: N/A C…

workstation to server mystery

submit for your opinion: AD network with numerous 2000 and 2003 servers, shared folders & printers, etc. recently added 2003 r2 server to be used for print server, routine shared duties, etc. functions well with other servers, used for GPO deployment mostly, can manage exchange on exchange server via system mgr, server to server all good BUT XP workstations cannot access this servers shared resources (printers and folders). XP workstation can see the server in the "enitre network", and can RDC into it, BUT when attempting to access a shared resources (printers, folders) the user is prompted for user name and password, and these are not accepted. no…

Workstatons lose connection to server overnight
by Guest DBCallaghan.SpmOff@googlemail.com- 2 replies

Hi This is a similar problem to others seen here like "Workstations lose connection to server after 10 hours" BUT I can't follow even the first instruction as we don't have a internic approved domain name. Here's our problem: We leave our PCs switched on and logged in overnight. During the night our PCs lose their network connection. On re-booting the PCs login and regain their network connection with no problems and work fine throughout the day. The PCs have all their power saving features disabled and in particular have the power saving features of the network card turned off. All power saving features of the server are also turned off. Some ne…

Hi. If possible could anyone confirm whether there is any risk of 'damage' to domain controllers if a network of ~20 servers with two (2003) Domain Controller were to be shutdown using a script similar to below : shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\DC1 shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\DC2 shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\Server1 shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\Server2 ............... I am currently looking at a small network which was previously working without any problems that has developed errors on their DCs to do with replication, dns, dfs etc. The errors only started happening after the above style of script was used to shutdown the system, the servers have been shutdown/restarte…

Dear All, I don't know if this is possible, but I thought I'd ask.... Is there anyway of using my server as a webcam server? I know it is a strange request, but does anybody know of any software or configuration, so if more than 2 people want to webcam, it can all go through the same place, and all can see everybody's camera? (2 people can just use Messenger, or equivalent) Hope this makes sense... Regards Paul.

Hello, As a test of our backups, I need to do a bare-metal restore of a Windows server using a full backup taken with NTbackup. Presuming that I'm restoring to a server with identical hardware and drive layout, can I do the following: - install Windows 2003 with the same service-pack level into a different Windows directory, e.g., c:\winrestore and into no domain; - run NTbackup and select to restore everything on all drives and the system state, with the option to restore over any existing files; - reboot the server after the restore completes. The server is just an application server in a domain; it's not a DC or anything like that. I'm thinking that…

Write Disk Caching
by Guest Eager- 0 replies

Clean install of Windows Server 2003 (x64 Enterprise Edition), not a DC yet. Copy from another local disk to the boot disk is fast as expected. After promoting (by wizard) to DC, the same operation seems to be 5-10 times slower (depending of many small or fewer large files). Tried to enable write caching (I beleive the promotion wizard disabled it) and got back the initial fast speed. This is not a setting I am very happy with because perhaps big loss may be experienced if power is lost (experience), should of course use another disk for storing "normal" data. Anyway, is this large difference what should be expected (5-10 times slower without caching) or …
