Some machines detect an update as needed when others don't??
by Guest KCSteele- 0 replies
We have a couple groups of machines, the first group are machines that we own and the second group are leased. Both groups are running Office 2003 SP2. The second group are all created from a newer image, and the first group are all created from an older image. Both images had Office 2003 installed into them from a network share. When office updates are deployed they are done via SMS. For some reason, there are a couple Office updates for Outlook that only the first group detects as needed, while the second group does not. This was the case with MS07-003 and its replacement, MS08-015 (both Outlook remote code patches). Any idea why only the first group is dete…

Server 2003, Quickbooks, Client Desktop Memory Problem
by Guest Tommy Jordan- 0 replies

I may be starting in the wrong place, but trying to find the "right" place to post about server/desktop/quickbooks/progression issues in any one forum is just too broad, so here goes. I'll welcome advice, tips on where to look, solutions, etc. I'm running Server 2003 with Quickbooks Enterprise 7.0 AND McCullogh Progression accounting packages installed. (Why? We are replacing Progression with Quickbooks, but some older clients can't be ported to the new platform so we have to run BOTH for a year or so.) I have 12 client computers that connect to the server and pull the accounting databases across the network. Progression uses SQL, requiring the MSDE on the …

WIN2003: VPN Clients not getting IP Addresses
by Guest Gary- 0 replies
I need some help with Windows Server 2003 Routing and Remote Access and DHCP. Suddenly, VPN clients no longer get IP Addresses from the server when connecting up. My VPN connection shows an Autoconfiguration IP address instead. I saw some errors in the event log for Remote Access, but when looking at another server that is working, it has the same errors in the event log. Namely, event id: 20192 and 20169. 20169 actually describes kind of what my problem is...but since it still occurs on a working server, I'm assuming these are both unrelated. I'm not even sure where to start looking. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We noticed there are lot of "Application Data" folder showing up in our user's Home folder. When I double-click on the "Application Data" folder, it will shows the user's name as "F:\home\john" and displaying all of my user's files. When I double-click on another "Application Data" folder it will show the next user's files. When I rename the "Application Data" folder to the user's name it will change the username to all of the "Application Data" folder. Could you tell me how to fix it?

tmp files on one account will not go away
by Guest NJ- 0 replies

I keep getting a screen full of temporary files on a general student account at my school. Most of them start with "prf" which leaves me thinking they're temporary preference files? Anyway, I delete them out of the user's folder on the server and have even gone into the lab where the account is enabled to delete these files. No matter what I seem to do they keep coming back. Does anyone have an idea on what's causing this and how to get rid of it?

Hi All I am trying to create a file system that uses mounted volumes within a folder structure. The file system needs to have Shadow Copies available. It appears that although I can create shadow copies for mounted volumes it is impossible for users to use the previous versions tools to restore files within these mounts. Is this correct or is there a workaround? Many thanks

Scanning AD clients centrally for a single malicious file
by Guest M_Hood- 0 replies
Hi All, we have encountered a problem recently where a single malicous file called kill.bat has been running on our servers. We have some 120+ servers so it is not practical to maunually search each of these. Is there any way I can run a command, or download a program which will allow me to search all clients for this program? I know another option would be to run a script to delete this file if it is found, but I would like to know if it is on the servers before doing this (or have a record of where it was prior to deletion). Thanks in advance

VSS How?
by Guest UselessUser- 0 replies
Hi all, I am trying to work out how VSS works in detail.. I did post a similar post in the Exchange forum but have not had a response so am hoping that someone here may know... As far as I understand it.. software wise a copy on write solution is used... So when a backup is scheduled, VSS creates a map of the disk and pauses all i/o to the disk, once the map is created it allows i/o and allows any changes to be made to the disk, whilst copying the original contents of the disk to the diff area. My question is what does ntbackup do now! Does it attempt to create the backup from the diff area and then read any unchanged parts from the original disk?…

RE: Server 2008 install-generic activation error

RE: Server 2008 install-generic activation error I also posted a note to the vista general discussion group about a File Transfer Manager download problem. The install/activation problem described here is from Server 2008 downloaded from Technet > TechCenters > Resources for IT Professionals > Downloads. After further digging, it looks like I tried to use a TechNet Subcriber product key on a trial version of Server 2008. My only real problem is getting File Transfer Manager to work on Vista. Hi, I am working on a BladeCenter and configuring a boot from SAN configuration using Windows 2003 Server Standard SP1. I am getting an error saying the LUN Number is greater than 0. I know it is recommended that the boot LUN be 0 but I am wondering if Windows can boot from a LUN Number that is not 0 ? If so, how do I get around this error during installation ? Thanks

One Certificate
by Guest Sajid- 0 replies

Dear All We are using BizTalk Server 2006 on Windows Server 2003 SP2 box. There are three dimensions to BizTalk (Receive, Send and Processing), on Send and Processing it can load balance automatically, if two BizTalk Servers are in the same group. But since we are talking to an external system that requires messages to be signed before they are sent, and they support only one certificate. Is there any way to install and use one certificate on two Windows 2003 Servers? If not what could be the best solution to our problem? Regards Sajid

Disk drive not not recognized correctly.
by Guest Brent Workman- 0 replies

I am trying to migrate to a new server using the a server migration tool. The problem I have run into is it will not see my d: drive. It sees the c: and f: drives no problem. Looking into this problem the disk management utility shows the drive as not having a file system and 100% free space although explorer shows there is 43gb used on this drive and it has been working fine otherwise. The probelm of it not showing up is also happening in the defrag utility that comes with windows. I ran the dmdiag utility and it shows the drive letter to device name properly, but does not show a mount point. The drive is a dynamic disk that works fine otherwise. Server…

Multimedia Timer Resolution.
by Guest voogru- 0 replies

Hey everyone, My server has recently experienced a situation where the multimedia timer resolution is being set to 1ms instead of the default (10/15ms) I figured it was just some background program that I couldnt kill, so I restarted the server and it was still experiencing the higher timer resolution. I uninstalled nearly everything I installed on the server and disabled all unneeded services to no avail, the multimedia timer is being set at boot to 1ms. The server is a Server 2003 R2 SP2, my only other option is to reload the OS and I want to avoid that of obvious reasons. There have been no driver changes since I experienced this.

Random Alleged Disk Corruption
by Guest Michael O- 0 replies

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 box with three ATA disks and one USB drive (also one ATA CD-ROM). It is an Active Directory controller as well as a file share machine. Randomly, usually months apart, it will give ntfs errors in the system log on one or more of the drives. All drives have been affected, no files have ever been lost. Sometimes, there will be a warning in the system tray about a corrupt file, this is the only machine I've ever witnessed a warning in the system tray for file corruption on. Sometimes, my anti-virus software will begin to crash at this time also. The only other symptom I've noticed is that folders that have not been modified get new …
