RE: Server 2008 install-generic activation error
by Guest Bruce Wilkinson- 0 replies

RE: Server 2008 install-generic activation error I also posted a note to the vista general discussion group about a File Transfer Manager download problem. The install/activation problem described here is from Server 2008 downloaded from Technet > TechCenters > Resources for IT Professionals > Downloads. After further digging, it looks like I tried to use a TechNet Subcriber product key on a trial version of Server 2008. My only real problem is getting File Transfer Manager to work on Vista. Move 2003 file server to new domain
by Guest Nic Hanekom- 0 replies

Hi We are in the process of a NT4 to 2003 migration. We are running a NT4 DC on domain X and a 2003 DC on domain Y in mixed mode. All out file servers are already on 2003. All users and groups have been migrated with ADMT from domains X to Y and all workstations have joined the new domain Y. Because of all the SID history being migrated with ADMT, all users on the new domain Y can still access the files and shares on the file servers on old domain X. Now we want to move these 2003 file servers to the new domain Y. How can we do this in way so all file and share permissions will automatically be changed as well? At the moment all shares and files on the …

Random Alleged Disk Corruption
by Guest Michael O- 0 replies

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 box with three ATA disks and one USB drive (also one ATA CD-ROM). It is an Active Directory controller as well as a file share machine. Randomly, usually months apart, it will give ntfs errors in the system log on one or more of the drives. All drives have been affected, no files have ever been lost. Sometimes, there will be a warning in the system tray about a corrupt file, this is the only machine I've ever witnessed a warning in the system tray for file corruption on. Sometimes, my anti-virus software will begin to crash at this time also. The only other symptom I've noticed is that folders that have not been modified get new …

Hi, My network has a redirection of documents from a DFSR sharepoint, and when my users create files or folders, or delete files or folders, explorer fails to auto-refresh to show the changes they have made. I've searched google, and came up with HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update Updatemode DWORD value, that needs to be 0 instead of 1, and I've made that change but I'm still getting the problem Any ideas Thanks, William Mann Trinity Catholic High School

by Guest David- 0 replies

Hello Peeps, We have an issue whereby we want external clients to register there VPN IP addresses in DNS. The VPN connections are handled by a RAS server which gets the IP addresses from DHCP. There are two DHCP Servers; DC01 DHCP,DNS, Domain Controller Server01 DHCP,DNS, Domain Controller Server02 RAS Both the servers are set to update A and PTR records for clients. In DNS however this doesn't seem to be the case. I then added DC01 to the DNSUpdateProxy and when i did this i saw my test laptop register its ip in dns. I then disconnected and reconnected and got a different IP address. the ip address i got then was one which was alre…

Hi, Got a problemem with mounting drives on an windows 2003 Enterprise server SP2. After mounting a disk from a san the windows server does not show a drive letter to the mounted disk. Windows explorer does show a drive letter, windows command does show a drive letter but under windows disk management there is no drive letter assigned to the disk. If you want to add a drive letter to the disk it gives a error, but in you got to the explorer of command prompt you can browse to the folder and files. After a server reset a drive letter is assigned and is working fine. The reason why restating is not an option is that the mounted disk must be availab…

Windows Server 2003 SetForegroundWindow
by Guest chiba1- 0 replies

I'm using Windows Server 2003 as a server and Windows XP as a client. On both of them I'm creating an event to SetForegroundWindow on another machine. It works from Server 2003 to XP but doesn't work from XP to Server 2003. I tried a combination of many functions. Is there a way to SetForegroundWindow on Server 2003 or it is not allowed by design? Thanks.

by Guest Bill- 0 replies

I have an older MFC application that runs as a service with a UI. When we get the QueryEndSession event we always return a true. Then when we get the EndSession event we Unsubclass all of the non-MFC windows per the Kowledge Base article 164166. This has worked for us all the way up through the Server 2003 Std Ed and Ent Ed, but has seemed to stop working on Server 2003 R2 release. On the R2 release we are recieviing a true with the WM_EndSession message on the first logoff , but if you logon again and then attempt a second logoff we are getting a false and the logoff is canceled. -- Bill

Volume Shadow Copy not backing up individual files
by Guest randy- 0 replies
I have Windows Server 2003 Std installed on my file server and am using volume shadow copy services. When I browse to a directory, right click and selct previous version, I see all the snapshots that have been taken, I'm able to open up the shadow copy then copy and paste the file back in the original location. However, if I browse to a file, right click and select previous version, there is no history there at all. Why is there only history at the directory level and not at the file level? I am able to restore the file when I open its parent directory, but not by just clicking on the file? Any thoughts?

by Guest Thomas- 0 replies

I need assistance with Share and Security permissions. Is sharing folder a two step process? I shared a folder (ex. DOC) - I have 4 sub-folders under DOC. Some users need permissions for two of sub-folders and some for all 4 sub-folders. What are my steps? 1. Shared the main folder DOC -- what permissions are given - Full Control, Change and Read or just give them Read? 2. Share the main folder of DOC - and give everyone the Read permission of DOC and go to each sub-folder and use the Security to set the sub-folders' permissions. Please HELP. All assistance is helpful. We are using Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory. We have a application that needs to authenticate to LDAP using SSL because of the ability to change passwords. I plan on using a self-signed certificate. My question is that, once you have installed the SSL certificate do use always need to authenticate to SSL LDAP or is it just for applications that need it?

Does DFS break when I move a server?
by Guest Ray- 0 replies
Morning All, I currently have two domains OLD and NEW and I’m in the process of migrating servers to NEW. I have a DFS structure setup in the NEW domain and the shares are pointing to a system in the OLD domain. My question is: If I move the file server in the OLD domain into the NEW domain (simply changing the domain association using the computer name tab) will the DFS pointers break? (DFS is currently using the UNC of the file server). Thanks in advance.

Permissions incorrectly ordered message after Robocopy
by Guest Aaron- 1 reply
I recently used Robocopy to migrate a number of file shares from one file server to another. The files were copies from a Windows 2003 SP1 server to a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server using the /COPYALL command. Everything appeared to go rather smoothly and so far everything appears to be working just fine. However, I've noticed that if you create a NEW subfolder within any of the folders that were copied over, and then use the GUI to view the security settings for that folder, you get a warning pop up saying that the permission entries are incorrectly ordered. If I click Ok, everything looks fine. If, after clicking OK on that new folder I then create a subfolde…
