Can anyone point me in the direction of some good documentation for how to set up a Windows 2003 Server IAS server to act as a logging server for a Cisco VPN 3005 Concentrator? I want to use IAS to keep a log of when users log on/off of VPN.

Missing templates
by Guest BigSam- 0 replies
I added an Enterprise CA to a domain controller. When accessing the IIS interface, we request a certificate using the Advanced Certificate Request option. Then we select the Create & submit a request to this CA. On the request page only 2 templates are available: Basic EFS & User. I opened the Certificate Templates in an MMC & saw many more certificates, including Computer, which I want to use. I don't understand why these templates are unavailable at run time. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Problem with offline files in Vista and OpportunisticLocking
by Guest Matt Colliver- 0 replies
For those who have not come across this – any (Windows) SBS 2003 server where opportunistic locking is disabled will prevent Vista from syncing offline files. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296264/en-us for more info. Windows XP pro etc will however work fine. The problem is that if you need to disable Opportunistic locking – and there are quite valid reasons for doing this, then well, you can’t sell Vista if the client wants offline files. One workaround is to host the application requiring OppLock disabled on one server, and do the offline files from another server. But this is not the theory behind a “Small” business Server – i.e. Small business which can’t a…

DCOM Errors
by Guest ieuuk- 0 replies
Hi, I keep getting dcom errors in the event logs on my exchange server: The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {9DA0E103-86CE-11D1-8699-00C04FB98036} to the user GODALMING\kbock SID (S-1-5-21-1974806577-1378421116-311576647-4893). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. So i go and look for a COM with that CLSID but i cannot find anything, Any ideas? Thanks, ieuuk

I have a weird problem that I hope somebody can shed some light on. I have a W2K3 SP2 Standard Edition DC and when I set the user account option "User must change password at next logon" the user is not prompted to change their password during the next logon session. I must login at least once, then logout. The next time after the logout I will be prompted to change the password. Any ideas?

Smartphone/PDA mobile access
by Guest gjb- 0 replies

Hi, I am looking for some advice on remote access server management using PDA/Smartphones using Windows Mobile. I understand many of these devices support RDP/VNC/VPN/Web clients that can be used to remotely access Windows servers. Email push is not so important as we use Lotus Notes. I have no idea what sort of infrastructure needs to be in place to support this or what devices are most appropriate, so would really like to know what others are doing in this arena and what devices/infrastructure they have purchased to support it. Many Thanks, GJ

How to read minidump file.
by Guest Plasticman- 0 replies
Hi, I am attempting to read a minidump file and it says I have loaded the wrong symbols. I have downloaded the correct symbols from the Microsoft website and installed them. In the debugger I point to the symbol path but no matter what I symbols I point to after I run the debugger it says that my symbols are incorrect. I guess I need some instructions on how to use the debugger. I tried the knowledge base and attempted to do what it recommended but had no luck. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve -- Steve Systems Administrator PSI

Configuring Windows Server 2003 Service Dependencies
by Guest Chris- 0 replies
Does anyone know if it is possible to make a local service on "Server A" dependent on a service on another server "Server B?" We have a service that is dependent on SQL services to properly start up but it is actually dependent on a remote server's SQL server service... and our GPOs are currently configured to install and reboot at the same time... and what happens is that it takes longer for Server B to reboot and start the SQL service which leads to the service on Server A to not start properly (it doesn't actually fail, it just doesn't start). I have the three recovery options set to restart the service but this doesn't seem to be effective because …

W2K3 Web Edition SP2; Network fails until first login
by Guest Michael Gunther- 0 replies
I'm running W2K3 Web Edition w/ SP2. When I reboot my server, sometimes when it boots up, the network is unavailable until I first login. Along with the network being unavailable, all network services, such as web service, are unavailable as well. This does not happen on every reboot but does happen often. I am running this server on VMware Server ver. 1.0.4. I have run Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition servers on VMware and I have not run into this problem before. So, I don't believe the problem lies with VMware, unless it is something to do with Web Edition in particular. I have made three copies of this virtual machine in order to test th…

Hi I have a windows 2003 SP2 server as a member server that has exchange server 2003 installed on it. For some reason the system files were over-written by some installation. that caused a generic host error by some DLL files and it wil not allow me to see the netwrok. I tried to replaced the DLL files with no success, I tried to re-install SP2 for windows server 2003, that is when this installtion indicates that some system files were repalced by different version. but, the SP2 installation stoped saying that RPC services is nopt runing, eventhough it is runing. how can i check which files were replaced and how do i correct them back?

Patch/application testing procedures & criteria.
by Guest Barkley Bees- 0 replies

For our patch testing process we install our internally approved patches to the lab environment systems (servers and clients). We then follow a basic checklist to see if any post install errors/issues arise - such as application problems and basic functionality. We also verify the all the event logs to for any issues. If no problems are found we then approve these pathes for production deployment. For our servers, we take backup images, using True Image (during our monthly maintenance window), applying any patches so we are able to roll back if any issues arise. I imagine many of you follow a similar process but would like to know what you folks use for…

RAS and DHCP address's
by Guest JB- 0 replies

Issue with my network: I have windows 2003 server running as a virtual PC on my regular windows XP box. Its running as a development web server, but only for internal network access (not yet available to the outside world). Anyway the issue I am having, I was looking at out Win 2k3 domain controller at the address leases shown under DHCP. As soon as this virtual sevrer is booted it takes up 10 internal IP Addresses on the network (all with a unique ID of RAS). My own PCrunning the virtual PC software has 2 RAS IP addresses (in addition to its regular IP address). Since we are starting to run short of free IP's on our current subnet this isn't a good thing.…

Win2k3 Server - POP3 service - MIME encoding for email attachments
by Guest Sam Robins- 0 replies
I'm using standard POP3 service to receive emails and having a weird problem. The service ignores (does not receive) any messages with binary attachments even though the sender receives confirmation receipt which states that massage was relayed successfully and I have no problem to receive emails with text attachments. I spend a whole day googling the subject and still can’t understand what’s happening. The question: is Win2k3 POP3 service supports MIME encoding for email attachments? And if it does then what setting could cause the service to ignore messages with binary attachments?

Setting up a new CA server /removing the old one
by Guest bay-br- 0 replies

In brief, we have a CA services (AD integrated)installed on a machine that might get removed off the network. Now, we have issued a few server certificates (for web access) and certs for EFS usage. We dont' want anything in the windows domain to break by removing this box. What I am planning to do: 1)Installa new Ent CA in the network (possible?) This will be the only CA in the domain eventually. 2)Revoke certs issued by old CA server 3)Issue new server certs (web access) using th new CA 4)If all is well, uninstall the old CA. My assumption is that the existing CA server is only used for EFS and server certificates. Is this feasible? Will I majorly break…

Windows 2003 and Fax Server.
by Guest Francesco Cerasa- 0 replies

Good afternoon all. Here is my issue. I have a Windows 2003 server with the latest service packs and hot fixes running in a Windows 2000 domain managed by a SBS2000 installation. The server works fine, it runs as a Terminal Server onto wich a number of users centrally run an accounting application along with MS Office and other applications. The issue is related to the accounting application when printing and connecting to the local fax service configured. If the fax is sent and the destination number is dialed in manually into the fax wizard, eveything works fine. The wizard ends, the fax is sent and the control gets back to the accounting application whic…

single domain scenario

we wish to implement a single-domain network structure for our company. We have 45 remote branches all have an average of 20 users per site and have 300 user's in HO. Since we have a server on each branch that host some applications, we intend to make this servers a DC with AD integrated DNS for the local users be authenticated locally. Some links / websites recommend to put a Global Catalog on each site to facilitate the logon query locally but i have also read about implementing a universal group membership caching w/c they said to be ideal for remote branches with limited bandwidth and harware resources. I've got confuse on this part on which to place with ou…

Roaming profiles with 2k3 and Vista..not working...help please.
by Guest ridergroov- 0 replies

Hi folks. I'm trying to get roaming profiles to work on a Vista Ultimate machine with Server 2003. Everything worked fine in XP until I started using Vista. I know the older profile doesn't' work with Vista, I know Vista uses a V2 at the end of its profile folder, but I can't for the life of me figure out why it won't copy the profile over to the user profile shared folder. It created the V2 folder just fine but it will not copy the profile to the server. Thanks.

Volume Shadow Copy -- Client Side API
by Guest ShahM802@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hi I am in the process of updating/migrating our home brew Document management system from netware to microsoft. In the process I we ( the development team) realized that microsoft has a technology that would provide a feature similar to novell's "salvage file" feature. This is a huge part of our application and is a major plus for our end users. My question is, is there any client side api for returning the "previous versions" of a file so that I can list them within our application? i'm looking for functionality that is similar to the "previous version" tab that is available through the client side file properties dialog. Thanks in advance.
