XP Domain users and Local users laptop login question??
by Guest steve- 4 replies
Laptop users are a bit confusing to me. Say I have a Laptops that can connect to the domain, ( if set up of course) but also because they are transportable don't alway connect to the domain. eg at home or on the road. I also know ( or think I know ??) that a laptop domain user lets call him MrDomainUser can logon to the laptop some number of times not connected to the domain. That there is some cache that allows a non authenticated user to login and access his files.(am I right here??) However once that cache has expired, ( I dont know the rules for this) but anyway, once its expired he cannot log in as MrDomainUser, untill he is connected to the domain again. …

xp ftp behind stock SBserver 2003 works ONCE after xp reboot...
by Guest whataflamingcrock@gmail.com- 1 reply

multiple XP Pro stations going through an SBS2003 box, internet works fine. However, if one ftp's from an XP box to an external site, it will Only work after the xp box is rebooted, and ONLY the first time - every subsequent ftp immediately gets connection closed. If i turn on the ftp service on SBS2003, then of course ftp works fine, but only to the server, not to the outside world. I'm at a loss to explain this behavior - can anyone offer a guess as to whether the problem lies on the XPP boxes, or on the SBS2003 box??? It seems it must be the SBS2003 box, as the connection to external sites does actually work the one time... And please, no debate abou…

XP Indexing Services
by Guest Kenny- 0 replies
I currently have a strange issue whereby indexing services is skipping one of my pdf's. As a test, I have setup indexing services on two XP SP3 machines, both with a fresh OS build. I can find the pdf when I search on one of the PC's, but not the other (both test PC's have identical indexing service setups and sample pdf data). One of the test PC's is a core 2 due, the other a single core box. I am not convinced the problem is related to hyperthreading, but won't rule this out. Can anyone please help? Cheers, Kenny

XP Logon Authentication
by Guest ridicker2@gmail.com- 1 reply

I came to a branch location to install a new router, but while you're here... This question came up. (They claim) Suddenly in the middle of the day (of course the day of my arrival), when the user logged on after lunch that their Home directory (H:) failed to show up. Now I know XP stores like the last 10 successful login attempts and then if there is no DC to authenticate against, XP goes ahead and logs in, without notifying you. So I tried the usual reboot, check TCP setting, firewalls, etc. Finally, I decided to go ahead with a 'net use' command to locate the server. This came back successful and I could now map her H:. BUT, if I logged off the local sy…

XP PC Blue Screen After Login
by Guest RandyH- 3 replies
I know this is a server group, however, I need to ask.... We use roaming profiles. When an old server is offline, users get a blue screen (no desktop) after logging in. All the old shares were created on the newer server. This morning, the old server is dead, users can't log in. administrator can log in. I can log the users in here at this location. I disabled roaming profiles on one user, that didn't help. I removed and readded the PC from and to the domain, that didn't help. Any thoughts? TIA

XP Pro & Expired Passwords (AD)
by Guest Sparks- 0 replies

Hi, We have a recurring issue where users are able to log onto our Active Directory domain, with passwords that have expired. The user is then denied access to all the network resources (Exchange included) until they log off, then log on, when they then get the "your password has expired, and you must change it now" prompt. It doesn't happen all the time, as I think most people will change their password when it is nearing the limit, it seems to happen more often when people are away (like over Christmas) when their password expires when they are off. Any ideas!? We are running XP Pro on the workstations and a mix of 2000 and 2003 servers. Th…

XP Pro Activation Issues
by Guest a.robertson- 1 reply

It seems to be that this is the current 'hot topic' and it unfortunate that i am adding to it. After having bought a new laptop, it annoys to me that i have had to send it back to the factory thinking that there may have been some hardware/software reason that caused the problem - the problem being of XP Pro asking to be activated, after i had already done so. I have now tried the telephone service 3 times now only to find that i am still 'locked out' - i cant do anything about it either as when i did manage to speak to a rep over the phone regarding this issue, after i had asked the question, was promptly hung up on. This is not what i would call …

XP Sp2 Machine logging on to wrong DC
by Guest JasonCat- 4 replies
I have an XP sp2 machine that takes about 20 minutes to log on. I have a multi site enviornment. When this pc logs on, it is logging in to our DC in Canada, instead of the DC here in the main office. This is why I am assuming the logon takes so long, because its going over a slow 768k WAN link. This is the only PC with this problem. When I boot the pc in safe mode with network support, it logs on fine, and to the correct DC. How can I make it use the correct DC for logging on? DNS is correct, and it is getting the correct ip address. Removing the pc from the domain, and rejoining did not help.

Hello, This one is driving me completely insane. 1 domain\site I have a 2008 x64 SP1 server running as a Hyper-V host - the host also hosts all the user\corp data shares the 2 DCs are 2008 x64, no 2003 DCs Fresh install of XP SP3 on a physical machine (not a VM), fully updated - (this behavior also is replicated on a XP SP3 VM) heres the situation: from my vista sp1 client I can browse the root \\server & all shares \\server\shares whether logged in as a user, or a domain admin from the xp box i cannot do either above, even using \\ip-address\ - I get this error: "the network name is no longer available" i went as far to install wins i…

XP SP3 issues for net admins
by Guest Newell White- 0 replies

Since installing this via WSUS all our XP workstations are configured to start SMTP Service and IIS Admin Service automatically. Note that Outlook does not require this service. I notice that the majority of them are also running the Web Publishing Service automatically. This may be a legacy of how my predecessor set them up, or it may also be SP3 related. Are any of you having the same experience? -- Newell White

I am running a win 2003 Standard Server. Class C network 192.168.0.0/24 I have currently set the scope usable 192.168.0.20 to 192.168.0.240 allowing for 220 auto discovery addresses I want to increase the scope to 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254 Allowing 244 auto discovery addresses Is the best way to do this just delete the existing scope and add a new one with new settings? Is there a better way to achive this 192.168.0.0/23 allowing for 512 connections? Thanking you

hi folks we are experiencing SERIOUS network performance issues since yesterdays MS Patches (941693, 945553, 948590 and 948581) wireless connections to our DC have required us to bounce the DC 7 times today. ALL of our nonDC Win 2003 Server R2 boxes are running fine, only the DC is experiencing this. we have been experiencing some copper wire network issues but just about every wireless developer in my company is ready to ring my neck. Anyone else experiencing this problem? I have lots of GPO errors in the event log and just about ready to call MS. Rob

You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer
by Guest altior- 4 replies

Hi We a Windows 2003 sp1 server which is a TS server and a backup dc. When a user logs in they get the default printers that are loaded through the group policy fine. If they want to add a network printer it gives this error "You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer". I read these solution from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259937/en-us but there are no local policies on a DC and it even says in the article I shouldn't get this error but I am. I have checked the printer permissions and nothing unusual there. If the user logs in from their normal pc they can add/remove so it doesn't seem to be anything i…

you have entered an invalid wildcard sequence
by Guest Polonius19- 4 replies

I am trying to run windows update and a brand new install of SBS 2003. I was trying to add the update sites to my Trusted site list, but no matter what I try to add, I get an invalid wildcard error. I get the error even when I don't have any wildcards in the address. On a lark, I tried to add local sites to the local tab and even some to the deny tab, always the same error, you have entered an invalid wildcard sequence. What gives? Any ideas. This is on a brand new HP Proliant server. It has 4 GB of ram and plenty of room on the hard drive. PS: I also can't get WSUS to load. It installed okay, but when I'm in the sever management console, the screen say…

Zeus is not accessible. You might not have permission to use thisnetwork resource.

We connect to a Win2k3 Fileserver via VPN. We have both Vista and XP machines connecting in. So that users don't have to remember the IP Address we have added an entry to the hosts files of the client machines - giving the server the name Zeus. When accessing Remote Desktop or other services this works fine. However when accessing files shares, \\Zeus we get the following message: "Zeus is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." If however we enter the IP address of the same machine into the file browser it accesses it no problem. This is happening on all the client machines, so I'm thinking it must be a server issue, b…
