DHCP Scope
by Guest Gis Bun- 3 replies

Hi. We have a single scope. The scope contains 7 segments of our network. 99% of our systems are using reserved addresses. What we want to do is to split the scope in two. 2 of the 7 segments will be on one scope with one gateway assigned and the others are on a second scope with a second gateway define. Is there a simple way or does the scope have to be wiped and the 2 scopes created from scratch? Moving/importing the reservations? Thanks

by Guest railmeat- 0 replies

Hello On a Windows 2003 SP1 R2 machine I get an error message when I try to access the "Removable Storage" MMC snapin in the Computer Managment console. The error is: "Access is denied. This snapin's display may be inconsistent with the Removable Storage Service. If the problem persists prease restart the snapin." I am an administrator. I have restarted the Removeable Storage service I have searched Google and tried the one suggestion I found there. How do I restart a snapin? Have any of you seen this problem? Do you have any suggestions for fixes? Thanks

by Guest jas0n- 4 replies

I have a HP DL320s, currently with 6 * 750GB SATA disks in a single logical drive, raid 6 of 2861491MB Windows 2008 x64 has been installed using a 50GB system partition and the plan was to create a couple of 1TB Volumes with the third volume using the remaining space and to add disk as needed. The server is just a low use basic file server. The Disk in DIsk Management shows as Disc0 Basic with the 50GB parition, layout simple, type basic, ntfs. The problem is the remaining unallocated disk shows as 2 separate sections, one of 1998GB and the other as 746.42GB. I can create new simple volumes in the 1998GB section but all the options are greyed ou…

Hello, I am looking for a solution to define a "virtual postscript printer". This "virtual postscript printer" woud in fact start a program of my own which will modify the PostScript file and then send the modified file to a real postscript printer. I manage to do so with RedMon 1.7 that I loaded from internet, but wonder if any windows server 2003 integrated solution exist. If anyone could help ? Thanking in advance.

SPA 2.0 (Server Performance Advisor)
by Guest TomK- 1 reply

As a replacement to the oild PerfMon, SPA is a very good monitoring tool. I am currently running SPA Data Collector scans daily on some servers which send their data to a dedicated SPA Report server. Now I want to graduate to using SQL so that I can ty out the SPA Trending feature. The Help File item for Trending is fairly brief: "To set up trending, right-click a data collector group, and then click Properties. Under Report Trending Database, type the name of the SQL database where you want to store the trend data, and then type the NetBIOS name of the SQL server that hosts the database." I set up SQL Express 2005 on the Report server and have done the…

SPA 2.0 (Server Performance Advisor) : No report
by Guest Olivier MATROT- 0 replies
Hello, I've successfully installed SPA 2.0 on a domain controler to troubleshoot Active Directory issues. But, the tool fails to generate the report after data collection. The current report view show the following error message : "This report does not contain useful information due to a bad data collection. Please refer to the help for more information." However, I've found a file named "incomplete_report.xml" in the report directory... There is information neither in the help file, nor in the windows logs. I've used Process Monitor to check for denied access. Everything is fine though. Any Help appreciated. TIA. Olivier MATROT.

Storage Feature Pack and LUKS encryption
by Guest Freaky- 3 replies

Hi there, read an article a couple of weeks ago about an upcoming storage feature pack. Appearantly it would include support for encrypting USB sticks. What I'm really curious about is if it will be compatible with LUKS http://luks.endorphin.org/. Been using LUKS for quite a while under linux and am able to use it under windows using FreeOTFE. Unfortunately, this requires administrator rights, atleast at installation, not sure on usage. As far as I'm concerned, atleast at this moment, LUKS has the best options to make it to a global standard. After waiting for years for encryption on USB sticks and the like it would be nice if there would be a sta…

Server 2003 "applying computer settings"
by Guest Wowbagger- 11 replies
This seems to be a very common problem without any clear answers. Windows 2003 Server SP2, stand-alone DC with ActiveDirectory installed and providing DNS services. The machine has a static IP address. When the server reboots (after installing patches through windowsupdate, for example - something that will NEVER be run again on this machine) it gets to the part about "apply computer settings" and then hangs. Sometimes the process bar moves, sometimes it doesn't. The APC issue does not apply here. The Symantec Antivirus issue does not apply. The BackupExec issue does not apply. DNS is configured correctly - the machine points at itself (127.0.0…

Hi all, I wonder what is the maximum size for my eventlog. I have read on Technet that 300 Mo is the best practices. But Is it 300 for one eventlog (so 3 * 300 for all my eventlogs) or is 300 is the sum of all eventlogs ? Thanks for your help. (I use W2003 Std & Ent 32 & 64 bits SP2) -- P.A.

Server 2008 Bug: Default Policy forces null-password accounts.
by Guest Anteaus- 0 replies
Just a quick note about a flaw in default policies which I've discovered: If used in the standalone-server role with no AD, Windows Server 2008 sets a default password policy enforcing complexity-rules, but NOT requiring a minimum length. This is an unsafe combination, and should be changed. Where useraccounts are created by way of a batchfile or script, this condition may lead to some or all accounts having null passwords. This fact may not be realised by the operator, but even if it is, it may then prove difficult to correct the situation. Example commands: C:\> net user fred /add Creates a new account with a null password. This should no…

Perfmon continuously running
by Guest Marius Homs- 0 replies

Hello, I manage a webserver and to keep track of the performance and stability of this machine, I've created a Counterlog. This log writes it's data to a SQL database 24/7. Now and then the counterlog just stops. How can I make sure it will always keep running and it restarts itself when it is stopped? When the server is rebooted the log starts, so that's not the problem. I think it has something to do with loosing the connection to the database, but I have no proof for this. But when that db-connection is lost, or something else makes the log stop: how should I configure the log so that is starts again? I have scheduled it to start manually and stops …

Windows Performance Analysis help
by Guest KeithK- 1 reply

I am realatively new to using perfmon and have been tasked with determining the cause and solution to a problem with the time it takes to perform a scheduled task that copies data from one server to another. The time to copy (using XCopy) has nearly doubled overnight. My plan is the following: 1) 15 min prior to the copy time, begin running perfmon on the following counters: Processor : % Processor Time Memory : Pages/sec Paging File : % Usage Physical Disk : % Disk Time Network Interface: Bytes Total/sec 2) 15 min past copy time stop running perfmon. 3) Import into PAL (Performa…

Re: Resize partition on Windows 2003 server urgent!!!!

Re: Resize partition on Windows 2003 server urgent!!!! There are some info I picked up from website: 1. Without partition software. You can resize other partitions, just not the boot partition which is the one that the Windows server 2003 files are located on. To resize it, use the disk configuration tool after starting up with the 2003 disk. You'll have to reinstall when you do this. 2. There is no free windows server 2003 partition software, there are two great partition software for windows server 2003. * Partition Magic will do not the trick. Use Norton Ghost to copy the partition onto another HD, and uninstall your Windows Server 2003. Then install…

by Guest Scott- 6 replies

Having a issue with a Win 2003 R2 server, Server is a DC, Exchange 2003, DNS, DHCP and File and Print server. Issue started about 2 weeks ago users will not be able to get to any shared folders or print. Exchange is still up and running with out a problem so the network card is not the issue. TCP/IP TOE is disabled. I've even completly disabled Symanted Endpoint Protection. But still having the issue. Nothing shows up in application or system logs. So far the only thing I have found is to do a reboot of the server to get it back up and running.

Offline files - partial sync :-(
by Guest Jake- 4 replies

Hi, One of our XP Pro users has enabled offline files and this normally works fine after having worked offline at work. However yesterday he had made substantial changes to the folder structure and created many new folders which were filled with files. After having logged on to the domain at work and waited for the logon sync process he checked if the new folders were created and synced in his server home folder. Only the new folders were created, but they were empty with none of the files which he had put in these folders while being offline. He logged off and restarted the computer to check whether or not this was permanent. After having logg…

Error report after error report
by Guest Wowbagger- 1 reply
As I was trying to get the server back online there were 2-3 dozen aborted reboots (plus a variety of other errors). Now that the system is more or less fully back online there is now a backlog of error reports that want to be sent. One at a time. I'm more than happy to submit them, but I don't want to click ok to send, then wait, then click the close button only to have another box requesting permission to send an error report immediately reappear. Is there a way to send/cancel all of the queued error reports all at once?

objectcategory vs objectclass
by Guest inenewbl- 4 replies

Hi all. I use the following to export names to my csv file. "csvde -r objectclass=user, -l displayname, -f test.csv" I found that computer objects are also exported even though i specifically state objectclass=user. However if i use objectcategory=user instead of objectclass=user, it will export only user objects and not computer objects. Why is this so? Pls advise. Thks in advance.
