Where should I install "Windows Server Update Services"?
by Guest Kelvin- 2 replies

I have tree file servers: Windows Server 2003 x32, as my Domain Controller Windows Server 2003 x64, with Exchange Server, this server has a partition with about 55GB I could use Windows Server 2003 x64, with Microsoft SQL Server, this server has a partition with about 129GB I could use Is there any reason I shouldn't install WSUS on any one of these servers? Is there a good reason to install WSUS on a specific server? I'm trying to figure out if I will run into conflicts on any one of these servers. Everything is running smooth and I don't want to change that if at all possible... Thanks Kelvin

Desktop Experience cannot install fail
by Guest George Valkov- 0 replies

I cannot install the Windows Desktop Experience on Windows 2008 server trial. This is a clean install. I tried updating windows, all updates installed successfully, except for two which gave this error: 0x80070057 ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER The parameter is incorrect. I was able to install the two remaining updates on the second attempt. Then I tried installing Windows Desktop Experience again, it says OK restart needed, after the restart, before the logon screen it says Stage 3 ... counts to 100% and restarts, then it indicates checking the registry for errors and restarts again. Then before the logon screen it says: Windows updates failed, reve…

Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard and 28 -- XP SP2 Clients
by Guest Krisk- 6 replies

We have Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard with 5 Client License. We also have 28 clients all running on XP SP2 laptops. The server has "dhcp server" and "file server" setup. On the server a folder is shared and the laptops map to that folder. The client computers are used for students so there could be multiple users per computer. There seems to be a problem when more then 5 computers are connected to the server. Do I need to have a license for each computer on the server for this and why? If I used a XP computer for a file server it would work. I thought the 5 client license was for SQL or other server type software. Any info would be great. Tha…

WINS Replication and Exchange
by Guest NC Beach Bum- 1 reply

Does access to an exchange server require WINS? The basis for the question is a bit more complex but here it is... We have a company with two internal domains and each is in it's own forest. Domain 1 is the main domain for the company and controlls servers (DC, Exchange, file, etc.), network CAT5 lines, firewall, and Internet Access. Domain 2 is new and contains one 1 DC. Domain 2 users are accessing the Domain 1 exchange server. The new DC in domain 2 has WINS which is trying to replciate with Domain 1 WINS. Is there a need for Domain 1 and Domain 2 to share WINS when they are only accessing exchange? Thanks for the insight! -- NC Bea…

Change Proxy Settings for LocalSystem account
by Guest PhilScott- 5 replies

Hi there, I am wondering if someone can help me with this issue. We have recently changed a our proxy server and this particular program installed on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 server will not connect to the internet to check for updates automatically anymore. Instead it sends me an alert email to tell me that the automatic update failed. I have spoken to the manufacturers of the software and they inform me that it will use the Proxy settings for the local system account and that I need to change this. So i go into the registry looking for HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings and sure enough, the ol…

Handle count
by Guest Brion- 0 replies
We have 2 Windows 2003 fileservers. They are clustered, and this problem seems to impact them both. The handle count is enormous - it grows in a stepping sort of fashion until it reaches about 25,000 or so, then the server starts complaining about not being able to allocate from the shared pool, and then within a day or so after that it dies (if we don't reboot it first). Digging in a bit further, it looks like the System process is the one that is consuming all those handles and not closing them. Again, over time, the graph looks like a stair case. I ran Handle.exe, and many of the files do look like legitimate files that users actually have open. B…

Is there a way around the win 2k3 memory limit or 4GB? Or can it be upgraded to the enterprise edition kernel without losing any programs/data/settings?
