Replace Certificate Authority
by Guest Peter- 1 reply

We wish to remove and replace our current W2K3 CA. We are in the process of replacing our DCs and don't wish to migrate, but rather start again. The only issued certs we have are for the DCs and these appear to be auto-enrolled as well as the root cert itself. Can we revoke these certs, revoke the root cert, uninstall CA and clean up AD objects without damaging AD? We would then propose to install a new root authority back into the same AD on a new DC. Would appreciate any advice or warnings regarding this approach. -- Cheerss, Peter

Windows Home Server or Windows Server (2008 or 2003)..?
by Guest Simon Coupland- 6 replies

I have been running a Win2003 server at home, using Active Directory and roaming profiles to manage approx 6 PCs. Mainly it's for fun, but it does a good job of allowing the family to log on to any PC and get their files etc. I now want to increase the functionality to server media files to a PS3 and soon a Media Centre PC. I've been looking at Microsoft's Windows Home Server and wondered if it would be a better solution than the W2k3 server I'm using. I know that WHS is based on W2K3 server, but it seems to have a load of ease of use features and disk load balancing capabilities which look good. I've just ordered 2 x 500GB disks for my server and want to …

Getting VPN setup on a fresh 2003 Server

Hi, I'm really stuck at the moment. I have a freshly installed Windows Server Enterprise 2003 which is not part of a domain, as we are using a workgroup behind a DSL router. The server only has one network card. We want to use this server as our location for SQL server which outside clients can VPN into the server directly and access the SQL database securely, but we are currently testing with internal vpn clients at present using Windows Pro XP2., and all ip address's are valid with the correct subnet mask and gateway. I used the Manage Server wizard to setup the Remote Access (VPN), and set a newly created user to have Dial in access. I either have no…

Performance Monitor not logging counters
by Guest majalane- 1 reply

I'm trying to log SQLServer:Cache Manager(_Total)\Cach Hit Ratio and SQLServer:General Statistics\User Connections but the counters are missing from the log file that is created. They have been added to the log with other counters. The other counters are being logged fine. I've reloaded the MSSQL counters and rebooted and have made zero headway. Does anyone have any thoughts on what to do next?

Windows file Permissions
by Guest mathhewj@hotmail.com- 3 replies

We are running Windows Server 2000 (SP4) for file sharing, and have come across a problem with permissions. If I create a folder (Test_Folder) on the server and assign a group (Write_Group) with the following permissions to the folder: List Folder Contents Read Write And then using the Advanced button to Apply these permissions via the method "This Folder Only". Next we have a few files that are in the Test_Folder, but I only want members of the Write_Group to be able to write to one of the files (notes.txt). So I assign the Group (Write_Group) with the following permissions on the file notes.txt: Modify Read & Execute Read Write This sho…

TS License Server hardware requirements
by Guest Net Admin- 0 replies

I am going to setup a 2003 server whose only role is Windows Terminal Server Licensing. I have 900 users and right now and 200 use Terminal Services Applications each day. Eventually 500 users will use it each day and of course they all don't log on at the same time. What are the hardware requirements for a server that could handle this? Thank You in advance.

Task Scheduler / UNC address
by Guest cr9101- 3 replies

I've been having intermittent problems with my Task Scheduler program. I run several batch files each night that run Access database. Most of the time they run correctly. But not always. Some mornings when I come in I find that the scheduler still says a batch file is running, but neither Access nor the batch file appears to be running. If I cancel the scheduled task, I can then run it successfully. After doing some research on this message board (and it's been a big help on a lot of issues!), I see that I need to use the unc address instead of the mapped address. How do you come up with the unc address for the program (MSAccess.exe)? For example, he…

Enumerating organisational units within vbs script
by Guest TJ_2006- 1 reply

Hi, I have developed alot of vbs logon scripts and administrate a medium size network, we are just about to make certain users have "roaming profiles", i have created the script below to read a list of account names and set there profile path to do so the only problem is i have to hardcode the organisational unit which the user is in, what i would like to do is enumerate all containers so regardless of what ou the user sits in it will update the profile. Const ForReading = 1 Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set objTextFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile _ ("roamingprofiles.txt", ForReading) Do Until objTextFile.AtEndOfStream AccountN…

Setup site to site VPN?
by Guest Fox1977- 5 replies

Hi all, Just wanted to get some ideas and expertise from everyone as I'm new to VPNs and got a big project to work on. Our company has just acquired an office at the other end of the country and I have the job of connecting the two office networks together. I have spent the last few weeks getting a remote access VPN up and running for teleworkers using microsoft RAS. Now i need to look into getting a site to site VPN setup and just wanted to share my ideas. the plan i was looking at was having each network (complete with DNS, DHCP and windows domain controller) on a different network address. Use a draytek router in one office to connect to a sonic wal…

Copy/transfer folder permissions without copying the files?
by Guest contactdellthornhill@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hi all, Is there a backup utility out there that will transfer folder permissions, even if none of the files in the folder have changed? Currently, we have have two Win2k3 servers - one server is a fileserver and the other server basically shadows the fileserver server. We synchronize the files between the fileserver and shadow server, and then we backup the shadow server to an external hard drive that the president of the company takes home with him at night which takes care of our "off site storage" (it's a small company, obviously). Anyways, it occurred to us that with synchronization the folder permissions are established when the folder is created for…
