VPN's and shared folders
by Guest Dave Cason- 5 replies

Hi Folks, I'm stumped, I've got an odd problem that just showed up. I run SBS 2003 and we have it sitting in behind a Nortel Router and it works fine. I have a VPN setup so people can login and get to their files on the shared folders from home. For some reason this no longer works, if I take a new XP Pro box, set it up and put it on it's own subnet and create the same old VPN connection, it WILL connect just fine as far as I can see but I can't see any of the shared folders on the network. All of my old connections on other systems can connect and see my shared folders just fine as usual, but if I try to add a new PC on now it does not wor…

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
by Guest Donovan- 1 reply

I am receiving the following error pop-up nearly every 30 seconds or so on my Windows 2003 Web Server. Runtime Error! Program: This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. There is no program listed, so I have been searching under Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. There are also no entries in the Event Log that seem to match with this error pop-up. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might look to find what application is causing the error? Donovan Ridenour IT Specialist

DC (win32) to DC (64Bit)
by Guest N.- 1 reply

We are planning to purchase a second domain controller for our single domain company. My question is can I run a Windows 2003 64 bit domain controller with a Windows 2003 32 bit domain controller ? Our plan is to eventually decommission our 32bit DC and just have our 64bit DC. Any issues with migration between the two? Thanks Nick

Synchronizing ~to~ the server, not from?
by Guest justmark- 2 replies

Our users currently work live off of the server for all of their applications. Unfortunately, with the size files (e.g. autocad) they use, our network is being cranky and they're losing their connections, resulting in lost data. We have everybody set up with Offline files, to synch down to their My Documents when they shut down. Additionally, we have .pst files that we need to keep backed up. So, here's my question: we are considering doing this backwards - work on the live files locally and then synch them back up to the server. Basically, we want their My Documents to synch to the server when they shut down, rather than going the other direction, l…

Is there a max number of mounted volumes in Server 2003?
by Guest Dave- 0 replies

I am not used to mounted volumes, but I've got a small partition M: with about 5 GB of free space. I created some folders under M: Volume0 Volume1 Volume2 etc And mounted a volume with like name to each empty folder. Is there any limit to how many mounted volumes Windows can handle? I am running Server 2003 (didn't see a specific forum for that OS). Thanks Dave MCSA Server 2003

I have 300 pc's broken up in various OU's broken down by geography. I would like to access the properties of each machine, "managed by" tab and assign someone rights to manage those pc's. The question is can this be done in one fell-swoop or faster than right clicking each individual pc? Thanks

Do I need defragment on server running RAID 5?
by Guest Bobson- 7 replies
Hi everyone, I would like to ask if I need to run the defragment on a server running RAID 5 (hardware)? If so, have anyone tried the 3rd party like Diskkeeper? Any comments? Also, no matter what I used to defragment, would that mess up the Shadow Copy on the data or the config on the server? I just read thru some posts here so I ask this one. Thank you very much in advance for your help! Bobson

Hi, I have a funny kind of setup ... exchange server is running the main dns server its dns settings are pointing to itself as primary and for secondary its pointing to a DC which is running the secondary zone. why have exchange server point to DC which is running a backup dns server. Shouldnt it always be able to query itself? Also isnt it a best practice not to run the primary DNS from the exchange server? thanks

Printing with Mandatory Profiles
by Guest TVITBRIAN- 0 replies

I had posted this problem before with no responses. I've come across another piece of the puzzle. I'll break down the problem for you all. School 2 domain controllers Students all use the same Mandatory Profile Printer's are being pushed with Server 2003 R2 pushprinterconnections.exe. The problem is that randomly students aren't able to print. Not a test page, not from word, not from anywhere. When you try to print a test page it says that the printer is not setup correctly and asks if you want to run the windows printing help wizard. Basically it's like it's missing the driver. A restart of the PC puts a bandaid on the problem. The interesting p…

SMB on member servers...
by Guest JRink- 0 replies

By default, it seems like a Windows 2003 Server that is NOT a DC does not have SMB signing enabled on it. That being the case, an XP machine connecting to the 2003 file server would NOT use SMB signing. I find this really odd. I'm assuming this is done because of the slight performance hit created by SMB signing. Does anyone actually turn ENABLE SMB signing on member servers so the clients can communicate with it securely? Due to our environment, I'm concerned about man-in-the-middle attacks... Looking for feedback, thanks. JR
