Admin access to roaming profiles (existing folders)
by Guest Rickard- 7 replies

I'm trying to figure out how to give administrators access to roaming profile folders stored on a server. I've set "Add the administrators security group to roaming user profiles" in a group policy object which takes care of any future profiles, but now I'm stuck with approx 5000 existing folder to which administrators do not have access. I believe the process to give admin access is: 1. Take ownership as admin (recursively). 2. Grant full control to administrators. 3. Give ownership back to the original user (recursively). However, doing this manually is a huge pain and considering we have about 5000 folders to go through, I would prefer an automated sol…

Can't install IIS on 2003 server
by Guest Chad Bailey- 1 reply

I'm trying to install IIS on a windows 20003 server R2 with service pack 2. Every time it stops at the same point and prompts me with... "Setup cannot copy the file convlog.exe. Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Service Pack 2 CD-ROM' in the drive you specify." I have tried pointing it to the I386 directory on the install CD. I have tried reinstalling SP2 and then running the IIS setup again. All to no avail. It always stops and prompts for that same file. I'm frustrated. Any ideas for me? Thanks. Chad

we had our file server crash. we got a replacement up and recovered the data, but the original was shot. I had some concerns about naming the replacement the same as the crashed server, (and was in a real hurry) so I created a new server and copied the data to it. we always redirect users My Document folders to the file server, and set the PCs up for offline folders, so their data is cached on their PCs. now I have an issue in that some, not all, of the PCs are still trying to sync with the old server, even while their My Documents are now directed to the new one. and syncing with the new one as well. how do I stop the PC from trying to sync with t…

opinion on dell RD100 internal SDA drive instead of tape backup?
by Guest Gary M- 0 replies

I have a friend with a small business who is looking at getting his first server. he is looking at windows server 2003, and instead of tape backup dell has recommended his going with their RD1000, its an internal SATA drive with removable 80/160 hard drive. what are the opinions on using several of these as backup instead of tape? he really doesnt care about restoring lost files or previous versions of data, more just for disaster recovery purposes. wants to be able to always keep one of thise offsite in case of disaster. myself, we have always used tape backups, but from time to time we are asked to restore a folder someone has deleted, or they hav…

Disconnected network shares
by Guest Jeff- 12 replies

I have approximately 100 users on our network that consists of 7 servers. There are approximately 1 dozen users that get disconnected from one server consistantly. That is a W2K server with network shares. I am pretty sure it is a DNS issue because I can ipconfig /release /renew and that works (most of the time). Sometimes I do not even have to do that, just click on the shared drive and it comes back. Thanks, Jeff

I have a very small domain consisting of one domain controller and a member server. I've tried configuring the DC to synchronize its clock with an external source following MS article: How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003 (816042). My DC does have the PDC operations role assigned to it. However, I keep getting the following errors logged in my System Event Log: Source: W32Time Event ID: 38 The time provider NtpClient cannot reach or is currently receiving invalid time data from time.nist.gov (ntp.m|0x8|192.168.99.28:123->192.43.244.18:123).
