Help with Server recover
by Guest edg- 4 replies

I got a new computer and I used the backup feature in Server 2008 to backup the server to a USB portable hard drive, but when I try to restore it would not allow me to use the USB drive so I transferred the backup file to the computer and I still don't have the option of selecting the backup file and I've tried everything; it's only giving me 2 options, the CD drive and Remote shared folder. I would like to know if there is a way around this problem and if not can I just extract what I really need from the backup file? Any help much appreciated. Thanks

Server 2008: Shared or concurrent remote desktop access
by Guest Tech_vs_Life- 10 replies

I see that the -console tag has no effect any more, with Server 2008. Is there any way at all with Windows Server 2008's remote desktop (or other bundled program) to get a shared session, i.e. for the remote user and the local user to both be able to see and share the same session? (as with most "remote control" programs, like pcanywhere). If not, what remote programs are compatible with Server 2008. thanks.

Server fails repeatedly after 2003 SP2 installation
by Guest Veijalainen Juha- 0 replies

After installing SP2 on Windows Server 2003 standard SP1, server fails every five days. I have not found out why. I'd like to hear any suggestions you have on solving this problem. Visible effect is that new applications/processes cannot be started (Application failed to initialize properly). Applications already running work usually fine. Server is sluggish, and usually cannot be restarted or shut down normally (power off is required). Event log shows that problems have started earlier. Latest failure shows first an event id 1501 from SNMP (System Log), id 2012 PerfOs "Unable to get process info from system" (Appl Log), id 10010 DCOM "..did not regis…

WDS will not start
by Guest Mark D- 0 replies

Hello, I have dual honed windows server 2003 Standard SP2. The server is joined to a Domain, there is a DNS server in the domain, and DHCP is configured on the server with an active scope. I have installed WDS, but when I try to start the WDS server I get the following error: "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". I then checked to see if Trivial FTP Daemon was running... and of course it isn't. So I tried starting the service manually, and I get the following error: "Could not start the Trivial FTP Daemon service on Local Computer. Error 11004: The requested name is invalid, but no data of the requested typ…

I am running Windows Server 2003sp2 and attempting to install McAfee Total Protection for Small Business. As I try to install the firewall component, I get an error: The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL This error is similar to the behavior of when IE7 tries to launch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932540 This is typically indicative of one of a number of applications that deploy their own copy of PSAPI.DLL: (From Hanselman's Blog: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheProcedureEntryPointGetProcessImageFileNameWCouldNotBeLocatedInTheDynamicLinkLibraryPSAPIDLLAfterIE7.aspx) V…

They are running Symantec Antivirus Enterprise with the Anti-Spam add on and also Symantec Backup Exec 11d. On all of these servers we are receiving the following errors in the event viewer logs when a reboot has been performed. We have also noticed that services such as ther backup exec services fail to start automatically and need to be started manually. SAN question
by Guest UselessUser- 1 reply

Hi all, We are looking at implementing a SAN in our network. We currently have several servers each with their own SCSI arrays locally attached... One of the benefits of a SAN appears to be that the disks are easily available to another machine, should the machine hosting the data fail... How exactly does this work in practice? For example, say I have a volume which contains user home directories on the SAN being shared via Server1. Now the volume will be formatted by NTFS which stores all the permissions.. If Server1 were to fail, how would I quickly restore access to the data, say through Server2? Obviously I would have to change the SAN zoning con…

Automate ASR Backup process?
by Guest Ken L- 0 replies

I have a number of machines on which I'd like to do ASR backups (to allow for bare metal recovery). The only way I have found to do the backup is via the ASR Backup wizard in NTBACKUP, which must be run from the GUI. Are there non-published command line switches for NTBACKUP that allow you to create an unattended ASR backup? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Please post any responses to the newsgroup. Ken
