I am installing a new version of a program on my W2K3 SP1 server and one of the requirements is to create a user account and grant this account the right to "Log on as a service" on the local machine. however when I go into the Local Security Policy editor I do not get the option to add or edit. It is greyed out. I have tried both ways using a domain admin account as well as the local admin account. Any ideas?

Allowing USB Devices for normal users on Server 2003
by Guest Lucas Williams- 4 replies

Hello everyone. I have two windows server machines that I just deployed as upgrades to older windows 2000 servers. The system admin in the department has a done all the software setup for the servers, however, when we hook them up to the domain and log in, they do not have access to the local usb devices plugged in, which is critical for their function. I have added the user account to the local administrators group, and still no joy. If I log in locally as the administrator, everything works fine, but there is no access to the file shares on the network that are required for the printers. I have tried making changes in the local security policy, and th…

Unresponsive 2003 Server

I'm experiencing a frustrating problem with a Windows 2003 Server RC2 running on a Dell PowerEdge 2950. I'm unsure which if any of the following details are relevant to the problem that I'm having, so pardon the extensive back story. The primary use of the machine is for running a C# application written using VS 2005 that is listening to stock market data. At one point the Server was part of a domain, but I switched it to a standalone server on a workgroup before sending it off to the datacenter it is housed in. I use remote desktop to connect to the machine and monitor the application. One or more times a day the machine locks up and becomes unresponsive.…

Server 2003 Standard .bkf file issue
by Guest Boethos- 9 replies

I am running SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. Several times in the last few months, and twice in the last few days an odd thing has happened. I start getting errors related to lack of available drive space. When I check it out, I find that there is a file that has been created, apparently automatically by windows, that is taking up all 54+ gigs of available drive space. The file is named 'emergency.bkf' and it always appears in the 'inetpub' directory. This server hosts a Cold Fusion driven website using a SQL Server database. I have SQL Server database set to back up regularly, and several scheduled tasks in Cold Fusion. But…

When is the next RC Release of Windows Server 2008 Scheduled?
by Guest Don Gra- 0 replies

Does anyone know when Microsoft is planning to release the next RC version (i.e. RC1) of Windows Server 2008? I found an announcement that said that the current WLK cannot be used to certify drivers in Windows Server 2008 - but that they would be releasing an RTM version of the WLK (that may be used to certify drivers) along with the next RC release of Windows Server 2008 - but I have been unable to find the scheduled date! I know that the RTM is scheduled for the end of Feb '08 so I assume that the RC1 release will be sometime before that. Thanks, Don. -- Don Gra

How to permit access to create Scheduled Tasks for non-Admin users
by Guest shdowflare- 3 replies

Hey all, We have a few application experts to which we've given user-level RDP access to some W2K3 servers. They want to be able to create scheduled tasks that will run under their account. By default, non-Admins can't see the Scheduled Tasks applet. "Access Denied" is what they see. I've seen some GPO config options regarding the Task Scheduler but I can't seem to find one that will allow regular system users to create/modify scheduled tasks. Can you guys help me out? Thanks in advance, B

This is kind of a boring question, but I was wondering if there was a way to export all the URL's out of your Favorites in Internet Explorer. I've got a lot of favorites stored on XP and want to export the URL's out to a text file or something but have never qute figured out how to do it.

Remote Access
by Guest Craig Kalugin- 10 replies

We have a SBS 2003 with 10 users. The owner of the company wants to be able to access the network from his home. Not just the network but also his work pc desktop, which has unique programs he needs to be able to run. I have looked at remote desktop and was able to log in but in only gives you a desktop from the server i'm guessing. How do i configure everything so when he logs in from home he gets access to his work computer, and does the work computer need to be powered on, or can it be in sleep mode?

domain upgrade
by Guest gregski- 0 replies

I'm halfway through a domain upgrade, but need to take a few steps back. Just not sure how far to go. I'm going to upgrade a 2k domain to 2k3. A single forest, no child domains. A single 2k dc, 2k & 2k3 member servers, exchange 2k. I ran 2k3 adprep, promoted a 2k3 member server to a dc and transfered the fsmo roles to it. Then I had a problem with exchange 2k. The resolution involved re-installing exchange and running 2k adprep. So how do I proceed from here to finish the domain upgrade? I'm thinking re-run 2k3 adprep and then demote the 2k dc. Or should I demote the 2k3 dc so that the domain is pure 2k and start the process all over again? Than…

schedule service restart
by Guest MAdrox- 2 replies

Hope this is the right group, if not let me know. I have a need to schedule routine restarts of IIS on several 2003 servers. The main reason is crap code but thats not scheduled to be worked on until after the new year, got to love priorities. The bandaid fix is to restart IIS daily which is no issue if I'm here. But I wont schedule my weekends around having web access just to do this. So does anyone know of a program\method\etc to schedule a service like IIS to restart every (lets say) 12 or 24 hours? Thanks for your time! Keith
