Demoting DC's that are file servers
by Guest JT- 3 replies

We have a number of remote sites that have DC's configured as file servers. If we pull the DC role out and leave the servers just to act as WSUS and file servers, will the file shares and permissions remain untouched? I am guessing so since the services are independent of each other and the server remains a member of the domain? I am correct here? I dont have the time nor the resources available to me to test this in a lab environment. Thanks

Licensing question
by Guest Martyn- 2 replies

We supply software and printing hardware to the printing shop industry. Our new software runs on a 2003 server and the customer has an option for us to supply a 2003 R2 server. My question is if the customer has a per seat licensing scheme and we supply the server as part of a deal does the supplied server go onto their per seat licensing? If yes does this change if the supplied server does not get added to the domain i.e. standalone server?

Roaming Profiles Question
by Guest Mr. JYC- 2 replies

Hello, When a roaming profile is set up for a domain user, does the applications and the settings for those applications get set up in the profile? For instance, if someone was using Outlook or Outlook Express, would the application and the mail settings be stored in the profile? I know the application (Outlook or Outlook Express) has to be available on the workstation but would the user settings (mail settings) follow the user around? -- Thank you for your help! JYC

Quota
by Guest Patrick D.- 2 replies

Hi, For a FTP-User I fixed quota (Warning Level/Limit). The FTP-User has got a Windows Server account. The user has access rights (read/write) for one folder on this webserver. The current space used by the FTP-user is about 30% / 45 MB. But in the window "Quota Entries" I can see, that still 0 bytes are used by this user - after pressing refresh view of course. In fact I copied the initial amount of data with remote desktop as admin to the specified folder, where our FTP-user has his access rights. What do I need to do, that the quota-window can display the correct numbers? Do I need to delete the whole data and upload it again with this FTP-user? Th…

by Guest huff-n-puff- 4 replies

Hi I have just upgraded my server from 2GB to 4GB of RAM. It has Windows 2003 Server Enterprise 32Bit AMD Athlon64 3000+ CPU. Windows will only recognise 3.25 GB of the 4GB RAM. I have tried combinations of the /PAE or /3GB and /USERVA switches in the boot.ini file with no luck. Has anyone an idea of how to get Windows to see the full RAM? Thanks

WM_EndSession
by Guest Bill- 0 replies

I have an older MFC application that runs as a service with a UI. When we get the QueryEndSession event we always return a true. Then when we get the EndSession event we Unsubclass all of the non-MFC windows per the Kowledge Base article 164166. This has worked for us all the way up through the Server 2003 Std Ed and Ent Ed, but has seemed to stop working on Server 2003 R2 release. On the R2 release we are recieviing a true with the WM_EndSession message on the first logoff , but if you logon again and then attempt a second logoff we are getting a false and the logoff is canceled. -- Bill

Event ID 9840 When Backing Up Exchange 2007 Information Store
by Guest David Frasca- 0 replies

We are running Windows Server 2003 SP2, Exchange Server 2007, and Symantec Backup Exec 11D with the Exchange Agent. When I try to backup the Information Store Backup Exec fails with a VSS writer error, and the server reports Event IDs 9840, 9814, 2007, and 2907. When I reboot the server this fixes it for a while, but the problem keeps resurfacing. Symantec tells me it is a known issue with 2003 Server and points me to a Microsoft knowledge base that tells me to dismount and remount my store or to restart the Information Store service. Neither of these options are viable or practical in a production environment. I tried to call Microsoft, but they wont…

Slow remote connection to a server after installing SP2
by Guest Augusto Alvarez- 1 reply

I've just install on a IBM server a clean Windows Server 2003 R2 with all the security updates for SP1, everything went fine so far. After that clean installation I've downloaded and installed SP2 for Windows 2003, at that moment the remote desktop connection to that server started to work really really slow... I dont understand why. But if I uninstall the SP2 works perfctly again. It's really strange because I have other servers with the exact same configuration and I don't have any problems with RDP. Any ideas? Cheers! -- augusto alvarez | it pro | southworks s.r.l. http://staff.southworks.net/aalvarez

Single instance of Scheduled Task
by Guest Jim Brown- 4 replies
Is there a way to have a Scheduled Task that does not start if it’s already running? I create scheduled tasks that start a MS Access project database to do some processing. But if it’s not complete by the next start time, it needs to skip that scheduled start. I can’t do this in VBA code because since it’s a project/adp database you get the “database will be opened read only” dialog box before any of your code runs.

Capturing image when PC hase RAID card
by Guest disgruntled tech- 0 replies

I am using Windows Deployment Services in native mode. I can capture and image machines w/o RAID cards just fine. But the issue is when I want to capture an image of my server(s) that have RAID controllers. Even if I add the raid drivers using the WAIK to the .WIM file I still get no "volume" such as C: options when in the capture menu screen this is driving me crazy.. is this perhaps a limitation od Windows deployment services, that it can not capture or deploy to a machine with RAID? Any ideas? My servers are Dell Poweredge 2950's and 1950's with the integrated controllers.

I have noticed a user profile called madmin$ on our SBS2003 server. I have no idea where it came from. I did a google search but came up empty. Is this a legitimate system user or something else. I also keep disabling this user and every few days it becomes active again. What is going on? Please help...
