Applications launch to background
by Guest mindy.parsons@gmail.com- 3 replies

I have several Windows 2003 servers which after a time the applications launch into the background for some odd reason instead of the foreground. It's not specific to the application - eg. open a notepad file and it opens greyed out. A reboot clears the problem, but after a day the server goes back into behaving this way. It makes it impossible to switch from the Summary window in SSMS to activate a Query window, and when at a CMD prompt, the history window pops up after the first entry and I can't get rid of it. Then I reboot and wait for it to happen again. Has anyone heard of this kind of behavior?

How to compare two Windows 2003 Servers Settings and Software
by Guest Michael- 1 reply

Hello, I am having a problem with installing a custom in house software program on a Windows 2003 server. I have two different Windows 2003 Server boxes, both with Service Pack 1. The software works on one of the boxes but it does not work on the other. There isn't any errors on the one that doesn't work and we suspect there might be a patch or minor software configuration difference between the two machines. I am using Regmon to try and see if there is any obvious registry issues but I was wondering if there were any other tools or techniques I can use to try and find the difference between these two machines without having to eye ball it. Any help w…

by Guest David- 1 reply

I did post this in the SBS group by mistake. It isn't an SBS Network. Hi We have several hundred remote users. It has come to my attention that when they VPN in they don't update their DNS records automatically. This can only it can be done by running the ipconfig /registerdns command. We have a RAS server on the network and two DHCP servers which assign the clients IP addreses. Both DHCP servers are relay agents for the RAS. I have checked DHCP and it is set too "Always dynamically update A records and PTR records" both on the server level and on the scope. I think the problem maybe that a computer only registers its DNS when it starts up, and when they…

Failure Audit
by Guest Craig Kalugin- 3 replies

I recently noticed in the Security Event Log a lot of Failure Audits. These seem to be "Unknown Username or password" for the administrator. Looking at the event it shows a Source Network Address". When i look up the addresses on the internet, they show mostly coming from China. It would appear that someone is trying to hack into our system (SBS2003, SP2) using the administrator name. We have Symantec Client Security and ISA2004. Is there anything I should be doing to make sure someone doesn't hack in. I am really nervous..

Need HP printer driver for server
by Guest Jim- 3 replies

I'm trying to install my HP psc 2100 printer on the new Windows Home Server operating system. Although the driver installs (it does flag that this OS is not Windows XP) , it prints only blank pages. I was told to try to use a driver for Windows Server 2003 (since that is a major part of Windows Home Server). I would appreciate if someone could tell me what/where driver to use. Many thanks. Jim
