Hi, We have a w2k3 std member server (ML370 G5, 2Gb RAM) on a domain network. We are looking into utilising virtualisation to install a terminal server on the network. My questions are: 1. Can it be done? 2. If so, can someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction please? Thank you in advance, Lyj

Add RTM Hyper-V to 2008 "Without Hyper-V"
by Guest William Fields- 1 reply

I may have messed up... I just did a brand new 2008 install "without hyper-v" because the one included in 2008 was beta code. I was assuming I'd be able to download and install Hyper-V either from MSDN subscribers area, or from the public downloads area. Is it possible to download/install RTM Hyper-V to a an install of "Server 2008 Without Hyper-V"? If so, what do I need to download and where can I find it? Thanks.

I just wonder whether it will effect printing and file sharing if we disable nullsession in windows server 2000 and windows server 2003? Does anyone experience any issues by doing so --diable nullsession in registry? I noticed in window server 2000, restrict anonymous is set o but in window server 2003, there are two strings: one is restrictanonymous=0 and another string is restrictanonumous=1 What is the different? Thanks!

Can you remove DNS from Domain Controller and reinstall to repair?
by Guest Saral6978- 14 replies

I'm having issues with the DNS server service - when set to automatic it won't allow my DC to boot - hangs on Preparing Network Connections. If I set it to Manual it boots up and I can login and then I start DNS manually after login. I believe the problem started after a recent MS Update. I'm toying with the idea of uninstalling DNS and reinstalling while it is still a DC with Active Directory. Can I do that or no?

KMS Question
by Guest Tim Patterson- 1 reply
I have just set up a KMS service instance on Server 2008. The question I have is can this instance activate both Vista clients and Server 2008 clients or do I need one KMS service for Vista and another for Server 2008. The reason that I am confused is that in my Volume Licensing web page I have a KMS key available that is attached to Vista and also one for Server 2008. When I installed the KMS service on Server 2008 with the slmgr tool it says I have a group B license (which is fine for the versions of Server 2008 that I am using). Any insight into this would be very helpful! Thanks, ~Tim

Moving Vista to a new domain
by Guest Strunk- 1 reply

Hello, We are planing a migration to a new domain due to some company changes. We can move all XP's with the ADMT from Microsoft but that does not handle Vista installation (i know that version 3.1 of the ADMT tool will be able to do that but that demands a Windows 2008 server and we don't have that). Does anyone have an idea on how to move the Vista PC's and Vista user profiles to a new domain without lossing settings ?. /Strunk

cannot repair/uninstall .net 2
by Guest totoro- 1 reply

I went through a big round of updates and patches on my 20003 SBS. Unfortunately the updates "broke" .Net 2 which was previously installed. I tried to uninstall .net, but no luck. and then I tried to repair .net, also with to no success, getting an error that the install package couldn't be located. I downloaded the package (NetFx20SP1_x86.exe) and tried to reintall on top of the exisitng but that failed as well. How can I get .net 2 reinstalled and working? any help or input is greatly appreciated.

My company is going to star tthe process of buidling a new File and Print server for our domain. I wanted to get opinions on using Server 2008 for this job. Right the a 2003 server is performing this duty. I need this to be a clean and painless operation. I've been thinking I should just go with 2008 32bit, to avoid any driver issues in the migration. What is the general consesus on this? If there are other caveats with this migration we could deploy a new 2003 server for this job. We have a lot of Shares, printers and files on the old server and I need a seamless move. Also any tools to help aid in the process, and perhaps a checklist of best practic…

Need Help With Script
by Guest Will- 4 replies
I need help with a simple script. I want to put the output of a command into an environment variable, and I tried this construction in a CMD file: for /f "usebackq delims=" %%i in (`D:\USR\BINTU\MKSNT\date +%a`) do set dayofweek=%%i The moment this line of the script executes, the script is terminated with no error. It looks to me like the date.exe command I am calling is exiting in a way that doesn't allow a return back to the script that called it. The %dayofweek% environment variable is NOT being set. Any thoughts on how I can get this to work? -- Will

Windows 2008-0.0.0.0 IP address
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

I upgraded from windows 2003 to windows 2008 (enterprise edition for both)...and upgrade was fine (all drivers updated too). when I put in the IP address...and click ok...the IP and subnet mask go to 0.0.0.0. the gateway and dns server stays. i go to the 2nd tab (tcp v4), and I see 0.0.0.0 for the IP, then the 10.5.x.x that I entered. I remove the 0.0.0.0 and go back to the original box..and I see it the way I set it up. I click ok..and the same as before. Is there some type of ipautoconfiguration or something that keeps putting this 0.0.0.0 in there..and how can I turn it off? this is just a test server. any help is appreciated. it is a dell2650, broadcom…

I have created a few scheduled tasks which will run a .BAT file. The BAT file contains a line to run NTBACKUP. If I run the .bat file from command line, NTBACKUP starts. If I run the Scheduled Task from Task scheduler, it will shows it runs and quits after a few seconds. Properties of the task: Run: "C:\Scripts\Weekly Backup.bat" Start In: c:\Scripts From the task scheduler's log: "Weekly Full Backup.job" (ntbackup.exe) Started 9/20/2008 7:29:45 PM "Weekly Full Backup.job" (ntbackup.exe) Finished 9/20/2008 7:29:49 PM Result: The task completed with an exit code of (0). Any idea?

We want to give a user access to a server via Remote Desktop and only give them access to a single program. This works perfectly fine, howerver when the user (or us as Administrators) close the program, the program closes but their is no way to exist out of the session unless you disconnect. By no way I mean the screen is just blue, looks like explorer.exe. I have a Windows 2003 Server Environment. Thank You

File copy help
by Guest phavel- 3 replies

Hi, I need some suggestions for solving a file copy problem. I essentially need to watch multiple directories for new files, and copy any new files to a common destination. The directories I need to watch are in the same top level folder, but are in different sub folders. Any 3rdparty tools or scripting ideas that might make this easy and scalable (the number of source directories will continue to grow). Thanks.
