W2K3 Backup Image Software Recommendation
by Guest JohnR- 1 reply

Hi, I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with six 450GB SAS discs forming a RAID 10 array of 1.2 TB. I'm running Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP1. I need some software that will create an image of the system on an external disc that I can later use for complete system recovery. I've found Acronis True Image Echo Server for Windows. It's ~$600 and seems like it might do what I need. I'm not very price sensitive, but if I can get something that will do basically the same thing for less, I'd like to consider it. Do you know of any other software I should consider? What if I added the need to make incremental backups to this requirement? Would that push me to a di…

Is W2008 ready for production? really ready?

OK I'm not experienced in admin - my background is software development - but I run a small business and do my own admin. I say this because a few times some quirky things happened a week ago (can't remember the details) but yesterday I had to install NTBACKUP utility twice (this is the special one from MS to allow restoration of NTBACKUPed files from W2003) as after the first time I installed it it would not run due to a missing DLL. Similarly over the last 3 days I have been trying to register MSSOAP30.DLL without success. I have tried everything - I posted a thread on this forum - a thread on Experts-Exchange - everything. I am going on holidays …

And I also heard there is a 3rd party tool will do that for you. Thanks.

Is there a way to check what's taking licenses? When I get to Admin tools>Licensing on an 2003SBS server it just tels me how many are installed and what's the maximum usage. I've got 10 licenses and only 9 computers including the server so I would like to find out why the maximum usage is 11. Thanks yaro

Roaming Profile and a Login Script
by Guest Francisco- 2 replies
Environment: Server: Windows 2003 Workstations: Windows XP SP2 I have roaming profiles setup, and all user accounts have a login script to xcopy files to their local machine. My issue is, I editted the login script to "REM" (without the quotes) the xcopy statement, but the xcopy still seems to try to xcopy these files locally. I'm assuming the issue is with the roaming profiles. Any ideas how to resolve this? I would like to stop the xcopy ... i even deleted the statement and it still tries to copy the files locally after a restart. Thanks in advance.

NIC binding order!
by Guest Paul- 0 replies

We've a very strange problem in one of our server, i.e. NIC ordering in windows 2003 server always got changed automatically when we reboot the server. We want the NIC to be in one particular order for our application to work. Id set the order by doing the following but still it chages on the reboot How to change the binding order of network adapters 1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl , and then click OK. You can see the available connections in the LAN and High-Speed Internet section of the Network Connections window. 2. On the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings, and then click the Adapters and Bindings tab. http://sup…

start service with parameters on restart
by Guest exotericist- 22 replies

i'm charged with maintaining an application which has multiple listener services. the first service can be set to auto. subsequent services need to be passed a parameter to start. in 2003 i've used sc.exe to pass a parameter to a service on startup and this works fine. i could set it so that the services were started by the act of logging in. however, i'd like the services to come up automatically on restart without the need for user intervention, since that's what services are supposed to do. my question is, therefore, the one in the title: how can i start a service in windows server 2003 on machine restart and pass it a parameter? many tha…

How to restore some data created by NTBACKUP to W2008.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 1 reply
I know the backup utility in W2008 is not NTBACKUP. Anyway I connect a USB HD to W2008 that contains the W2003 backup - Disk Management sees it. I go into the W2008 backup utility, RECOVER/'Another server'/'Local drives'/ Then the 'Select backup location' screen appears but the Backup location drop-down box ONLY has the CD drive. This is strange as the description in the 'Select backup location' screen explicitly talks about "...an external disk attached to this server...". OK so if this new backup utility does not work for me can I install NTBACKUP to be used for recovery only? -- Regards Tom

I think I need to use regsvr32 in syswow64 to register a 32 bit dll: c:\Windows\syswow64\regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MSSoap\Binaries\MSSOAP30.DLL" It says the module failed to load etc. I also tried: regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MSSoap\Binaries\MSSOAP30.DLL" Same error message. I am installing a program that needs MSSOAP30.DLL -- Regards Tom

Mysterious shutdown/reboot
by Guest SharedNews- 2 replies

I have a 2003 server sp2 that for the past 2 weeks has rebooted itself every thursday at about 2:15 pm. Nothing in event logs except the previous system shutdown was unexpected. This server is not facing internet and has Symantec NAV up to date, ran malicious spyware detector and rootkit revealer and nothing looks malicious. Is there a more detailed log that might help? My next step is going to be turn off the automatic reboot on failure to see if a BSOD pops up and to phyically watch it at the given time. We do have a UPS that has the replace battery light on- so I tried removing that also. Any other ideas welcome Carl

DNS settings
by Guest David C- 12 replies

The XP client machines seem to be slower accessing the internet via our 2003 server. I have the client TCP/IP settings to point to the AD server as the primary DNS IP address. When I go to access the internet, I get "Looking up www.Google.com" in lower left and there is a delay. The 2nd time I try with a different www address I get "Waiting for www.dell.com" (for example) and the page is very slow. I tested the DSL speed and all is fine with that, but it appears to be a DNS problem. Am I right? and how can I set client correctly? Thanks. p.s. I tried adding our outside (ISP) DNS as the secondary on my client and the initial internet was very fast.…

I have a couple of users that are receiving the following error message when they attempt to open an excel file on a personal network home share. The share resides on a Windows 2003 server which is to date with all service packs and updates. The client is Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates applied. I've checked out the following KB articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814112 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/214073 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313472 When I copied the folder that contains the files to another server and attempt to open open of the excel documents I do not receive the error. Installing New Work Stations
by Guest mcp6453- 4 replies

I do computer support for a non-profit organization. They just had 10 new Pentium 4 computers donated. The machines have fresh installations of XP SP2. It takes a long time to install SP3 and the updates. Plus, there are several other applications that need to be installed on each computer. Hopefully I can save some time by building one machine and then imaging the drive to the others. (All software is properly licensed.) So, I will use this occasion to try to understand a perpetual problem that I have: Giving administrator rights to the local machine after the work station joins the domain of the Windows 2003 Server. I have tried a number of ways, an…

Previous Windows Server 2003 Web Edition CDs we have installed had the volume label NRMWOEM_EN, which corresponds to Web Edition 32-bit OEM. This is according to the Microsoft KB 889713: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889713 Last week we purchased a license for Windows Server 2003 Web Edition 32-bit from an outfit online that has great feedback named Royal Discount. What they shipped us is a CD that has the label CRMWOEM_EN. Can someone please identify what is the C in that label? The license does not appear to be compatible with virtual machines built with the other volume label, so this is why we want to understand what we bought in mo…

remote user login problem on server 2003
by Guest Jasper- 0 replies

I am having a problem with some users logging into server 2003 from a remote desktop. I have had 2 users try to login and they just get a black screen. If they login at the server it works or if I login at their desktop I can login and get the remote desktop. I have checked the RDP settings and checked the accounts at the server. If I make them a new server login it works. I am using this workaround for now. Thanks for any help.

What happened to Windows 2008 server remote access?
by Guest user- 0 replies
I have bought 5 new 2008 servers to replace my 2003 servers. I installed a USR external modem and enabled Dialup networking Route & Remote access. All went well, no errors, Routing & remote access for dialup running ok. Modem shows ok, did a test dial out, OK. Modems will not answer on any of the 5 servers, AA light blinks but thats it. Is there something new in 2008 server I am missing, just to get the modem to answer? I'll worry about authentication later.. I had no problems with this on 2003 servers / same modems. I even tried a diff modem on one. Thanks BUC

Windows 2003 crash
by Guest sean- 0 replies

one of my server which was running Windows 2003 Server w/ Sp2 crashed due to hard drive problem. The server had a 120gig HD which was partition into two. 1st partition was 30gig which was Windows installed and 2nd partition was unallocated. After rebooting with Windows 2003 CD and went into recovery, I cannot see the directory listing when issuing "dir". I get an error about an error occurred during directory enumeration. I ran chkdsk /p and it indicates another error. What I found out was there is NO free space available on the 1st partition. When I ran Windows 2003 setup, it does see the partition but it indicates it is in "raw" filesystem. I download…

Unlock a Locked login script?
by Guest Bjarne Duelund- 1 reply
Does anyone know how to 'unlock' a locked login script? Other than reboot the server. The script in question is a simple .cmd batch file that gets locked, so I can't overwrite it with changes. The server is running Windows Server R2 SP2 x64 in cluster configuration, tools like ProcessExplorer don't run on x64. Until now I have solved it by copying the script to a new folder and then move the share, but it would be nice with a proper solution. - Bjarne Duelund
