Memory usage question Windows 2003...
by Guest Joe- 2 replies

I have a question around memory usage on Windows 2003. The server is Windows 2003 Server Enterprise with 4 GB RAM and a 2 GB SWAP file. If I look at Task Manager the total of all running processes is about 1.5 GB. On the Performance Tab PF Usage shows 3.5 GB Physical Memory Total is: 3931592 Available is: 1822916 System cache is: 227544 Now what I would expect is that the total of all running processes should add up to the difference of Total - Available which is 2108676. These don't add up. My issue is that I am seeing SWAP File usage of > 95% on occasion. Am I off base, or is there something I…

Estimating how much memory your server is consuming on average.. best way to do so?
by Guest markm75- 0 replies

We run server 2003.. x86, x64 versions.. What i frequently do is check the total used memory just after a boot is completely done... Often times as an example.. I find this value for instance: 1200mb used (out of say 2000mb)... Ill let the system run for days.. maybe 2 weeks later.. I check this value.. and it is at say.. 2400 out of 2000 (meaning its using the paging file)... An example of things on this server might be SQL 2000 instances (say 3 of them), Sharepoint, some other services, sourcesafe.. Does a rule of thumb of just doubling that initial startup used memory.. sound like a reasonable gauge for how much memory the system will need in …

2000 to 2003 upgrade breaks my IIS
by Guest zooeyhallne- 1 reply

Hi Everyone! I hope someone can give me some advice on an IIS issue that happened with a 2000 to 2003 server upgrade. I had several websites running on my 2000 server, and everything working fine. Then, I did an in-place upgrade to 2003 server (std) and now my websites will not work. The client brings up an http 500 error when it tries to go to the page, and the server logs an error: "Event ID 10004 DCOM got error Logon failure: unknown username or bad password and was unable to logn \IWAM_computername in order to run the server". I did some checking on this error, and confirmed that IWAM_computername has logon as batch job right in the local pro…

Exception of Security with an ASP.Net Web Site
by Guest Nicole- 0 replies

Hello, I developped an ASP.Net Web Site in C# language. It can save the Project Server URL, connect to Project Server and create a Project on it. I debugged it and ran it correctly from Visual Studio 2005. Then, I published it on the local IIS Server from Visual Studio 2005. But I wanted to run it with Internet Explorer. I had problems to open it. Therefore I used the same port as SharePoint. I can open it. But when I click on the Connexion button, I have an exception of Security. The message is described like that : The application tried to run an operation which isn’t allowed by the security. You must ask to your system Administrator or modify the l…

Auto-Updates for production servers
by Guest Brian Kitt- 9 replies

Hello. I am a developer, and have been having an ongoing battle with our Network Admins, and would like advice here. They have Microsoft Windows Auto-Updates turned on for all production servers. This has caused numerous problems, because patches get applied, then cause servers to reboot, or other miscellaneous problems. I keep trying to tell them it is not a 'best practice' to have auto-updates on for production servers, but rather they should push them out with admin tools on a regular scheduled basis. They assure me they 'know what they are doing', and auto updates 'are required to prevent viruses and hackers'. They have assured me that Microsof…

Hi.. I have a I386 Windows 2003 R2 SP2 with ABE enabled for all shares, (and I have checked the properties of each share as well) The security permissions to the file are currently set to domain admins only, the share permission is domain users.. but ordinary domain users can still see the share.. (with access denied) I thought the shares were not suppose to be invisible to those without access? Any troubleshooting ideas would be appreciated Donna

user could shift folder despite having only read rights
by Guest inenewbl- 2 replies

Hi all. I have a user who could shift a folder from our fileserver to another location even though she has only read access rights(NTFS permission) to that folder. I have checked the user's effective permission and found that she has only read rights and traverse folder rights(assigned in special permission). I understand traverse folder rights only allow a user to go into folders which they do not have permissions without listing the contents. Hence why is my user able to shift a folder which she does not have anything more than read rights to it? Thks in advance.

When I remotely log on to a 2003SBS server and then via remote desktop to another server on that network running Server 2003 Standard I cannot use Manage Your Server nor mmc. I tried My Computer>rclick>Manage but doesn't work. Strange messages are popping out though, like "The application failed to initialize properly" or "Class not registered". Any ideas what can be the problem? yaro

Restore problem
by Guest LoneWolf- 9 replies

I have put up a new file server to replace the old one. After backing up the shares off the old one, when I go to do a restore, it runs for a few minutes, then stops and tells me it is out of disk space. There is over 300GB of free space on the drive. I have tried just backing up and restoring one share at a time, but the same thing happens. Most recent attempt: Backed up Operations share from old server to a file on new server. ~2.6GB Run restore to a folder on new server. Restore stops at 560MB and reports it is out of disk space. Disk has 337GB free. Any help is appreciated.

Service interaction with desktop
by Guest Henry- 0 replies

Hi, I have an application that can run as a service and places monitoring screens on the desktop. This service accesses document images stored on another server. When run under the local service account the service starts, the monitoring tools start on the desktop but it obviously cannot access the images on the network. When I use another account to start the service (an account with network access) the service does not initialize properly and the desktop monitoring tools do not start. This problem even occurs whether I use a domain admin account or local admin account. The accounts I have tried have the right to logon as a service granted to them …

Hello, As a test of our backups, I need to do a bare-metal restore of a Windows server using a full backup taken with NTbackup. Presuming that I'm restoring to a server with identical hardware and drive layout, can I do the following: - install Windows 2003 with the same service-pack level into a different Windows directory, e.g., c:\winrestore and into no domain; - run NTbackup and select to restore everything on all drives and the system state, with the option to restore over any existing files; - reboot the server after the restore completes. The server is just an application server in a domain; it's not a DC or anything like that. I'm thinking that…
