Application crash in Windows 2003 Server SP2
by Guest Rajavelu- 0 replies

Hi, There is a legacy application that runs fine from Win 98 SE up till Win 2003 Server. The application makes connectivity to an HTTPS URL. When the app is to use proxy server for its connectivity, the application crashes in Win 2K3 SP2 Server and the same works for other operating systems (even in Win 2K3 Server without SP1 or SP2). I could see the following in system's Application Log: Faulting application XYZ.exe, version 4.5.2.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x000224b2 There is also a Dr Watson log that succeeds above log and has the following; The application, C:\ABC\XYZ.exe, generated an application error …

New Users --> specific group

When a new user is created, they are automatically added to the "Domain Users" group. I would like to create(or modify) some kind of a Group policy that also adds them to another group as well, automatically. Is this do-able? If so, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks much, *$ aa#2290

Deleted Files Re-Appear
by Guest RAZ4183- 2 replies

I have a recurring issue with one of my users. We use roaming profiles on our network (windows 2003 servers SP2) his laptop has XP Pro SP2. Several months ago he deleted a number of Word/Excel files from his desktop but they would re-appear after he rebooted his system. I deleted the same files from his desktop, his locally cached profile, and from his roaming profile. This seemed to have solved the issue. Now those same files are back on his desktop several months later. This exact same situation happened last year with these same files. What is causing this and how can I permanently remove these files?

I'm building a new DC for our network that will replace an older machine. This machine will host FSMO,GC and DNS for the network. It's a Dell server in a RAID-1 array with a PERC 6/i SCSI controller. I've already run dcpromo on the machine and noticed the event logs warning about the write caching. This dis kcontroller does have battery backup on it so I believe I'm ok to leave this enabled? What does eveyone think in general about this? I want the the event logs clean as a whistle before I continue moving roles or at least know that I have a server in optimal condition. Should I disable write caching or not? Thanks

Unable to set up ODBC setting

I have a Win 2008 server that will host a front application that has an Oracle database backend. Prior to Win 2008, I would install the Oracle client and all would be good. I installed the Oracle client on the 2008 Server and got no errors. However when I go to "Create new data source", Oracle is not an option as it would be on 2003. Any suggestions on what I am missing. We are trying to move forward with 2008 deployments and would prefer not have to revert back to 2003. Thanks -- ccoates

by Guest JJ Jones- 0 replies

Hello, I've gotten an error code doing a backup of Windows Server 2008. I've spent about 30 minutes trying every imaginable search of Microsoft's site, but can't find an explanation. Any one know where I should look? The full message is: "Backup started at {long string of numbers} failed as Volume Shadow Copy. Operation failed for backup volume with the following error code: 2155348001". I do backups daily, but only get this message occassionally. Thanks

Permission Basics
by Guest Russella- 1 reply

I'll admit I'm a bit of a newbie, but I'm hoping someone can help with this. I'm trying to protect parent folders from accidental deletion, which I've done, however I can't seem to stop the content of these folders being deleted, despite receiving an access denied error. Here's the basic layout: PARENT FOLDER -> SUBFOLDER->FILES If I grant DELETE permissions (on subfolders & files only) on the PARENT, and then try to delete it, I receive the appropriate error, but all content is lost. Is there a way to ensure that if access is denied for the top most folder, that it won't propogate to subfolders and files? I know one solution would be…

NTBackup / Tape Label problems
by Guest Gnubman- 8 replies
Greetings, I am having problems running backups on an HP StorageWorks 1/8 Autoloader. The backup fails when it tries to load the tape. We are running Server 2003 sp1. We have a copy of Backup Exec v8 that is installed. This version of BackupExec does not support our Autoloader. I have tried to uninstall BackupExec but it fails with a "uninst.iso is corrupted or not valid" error. When I put a new tape into the Autoloader and try to run a test backup, it recognizes that it is a new tape and tries to use it. After this part I watched the tape drive load and unload the tape several times before ntbackup started complaining about the wait time. E…

Windows Universal Storage Server 2003 quits working
by Guest IT_Cowboy- 8 replies

I am having a problem with Windows Storage server . Every three weeks (to the day) stops communicating with the domain controllers. At first it seems like a network issue, but no other machines are affected (either servers or workstations). The symptoms are as follows: 1. Cannot remote desktop into the machine, says domain controller cannot be reached for authentication (UserEnv error ID 1053 occurs in Application log) 2. DFS Replication stops (of course it cannot find either DC, one of which it replicates to Event ID 5002) 3. Local workstations can access files, remote workstations that need to authenticate to acces files cannot 4. Not able to con…

windows 2003 default wallpaper weirdness
by Guest awrightus@hotmail.com- 0 replies

Okay, this is a strange one. Using Windows 2003 Standard SP2, I'm forcing the default wallpaper displayed at logon using the following registry key. [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop] "Wallpaper"="%systemroot%\\wallpaper.jpg" The wallpaper shows up as expected. However, if you grab the logon dialog box with the mouse and move it around the screen, it erases the graphics in the jpg! I tried the same thing using a bmp and didn't have that problem. Any ideas what would cause this? Thanks. Steve

Creating a Service Account that will access WMI / LDAP information
by Guest Eric Chatham- 3 replies

Hello, I currently am using my Domain Admin account to run a scheduled task. The scheduled task is a VB Script that accesses WMI information and LDAP information from a few Domain Controllers and Servers. How would I set up a service account with the appropriate permissions to access this information on each DC and memeber server? I'd like to stop using my Domain Admin account for the scheduled task. If you would like me to post the VB Code to see it more closely, let me know. Thanks. Can't Log on to Server.
by Guest Kardon Coupé- 2 replies

Dear All, Got a weird on here, don't how to get around it.... the Subject line is technically true, but not totally... I've got a laptop that is connecting wirelessly to a domain, usual practice, turn the latop on, wait a second or two for the wireless card to spring to life, and then log on... For some reason recently, it has been upable to log on, because windows isn't remember the I.P address (192.168.1.x) which has been manually set, so I get the error message about the profile will not be able to be stored... So, it boots up, I access the networking section, repair the connection, get my IP back and I'm fine, but when logging off, it doesn't s…

Re: How to extend C drive on Windows 2003 Server

Re: How to extend C drive on Windows 2003 Server You may find that there is not enough free space on a certain partition. For example, you want to enlarge C: drive, which usually is Windows system drive. EASEUS Partition Manager Personal lets you free enlarge or reduce a partition in Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server(Only Server Edition) without destroying data easily. Autoexec.bat with Windows 2003 Server?
by Guest Manny- 5 replies

Hi. I do not think that the old autoexec.bat concept work with Windows 2003 Server. So how do I now implement a command to execute automatically when the server is restarted, and without having to log into the server??? I have a need to always and automatically have the server run a "ROUTE ADD" statement from the commmand line. Thanks, Manny

Backups for Exchange 2007 on Windows 2003 SP2 server:
by Guest jprstokato- 1 reply

Backups for Exchange 2007 on Windows 2003 SP2 server: Both with Symantec and NTbackups, both the Volume Shadow Copy Service and MS Shadow Copy Provider stop after completing a 'successful' backup - without any errors recorded in the event logs. VSS previously ran continuously on the server (i.e. continued to run after a backup had finished). I take it the point youre making ins that VSS stops after a backup and then restarts.. It now stops after the backup finishes...and does not restart. Unless MS designed VSS to be restarted after each backup (i.e. daily), (which I suspect they didn't), I see this as a problem.. Previous versions are not currenlty used i…

Windows Server 2008 w/ Hyper-V
by Guest Robert Ritchie- 2 replies

I don't know how much background information you guys need, but my question is pretty simple, or so I believe... I installed Windows Server 2008 Standard with Hyper-V (the parent OS) and installed all drivers and updates... I then added the Hyper-V role and proceeded to install another instance of Server 2008 Standard (guest OS #1) and once that was up and running I installed the HYPER-V update which enabled all my virtual drivers to work (such as network adapters and so forth) and *THEN* I wanted to install a SECOND guest OS... But I'm getting some error about the optical drive already being in use (presumably by the first guest OS) so when I shut …

SNMP Security - Where is it?
by Guest Paul Bergson [MVP-DS]- 1 reply

Ok, I'm signed on as admin, I have been elevated as admin (Run as Administrator) on the services console. So when I select SNMP Trap there is no security tab. I have been here before but unfortunately I can't recall the route and the birds ate my bread crumbs. Anyone recall the way to get the security tab to show up? -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Where did my memory go?
by Guest jacintoj@gmail.com- 1 reply

We have a server running Windows Server 2003 Std Ed 64-bit w/ 4GB of RAM. Last night, I ran a batch file that would clear up files in a folder that were older than 1 year using the forfiles command. Earlier this morning, we got an alert from our monitoring app saying memory was low. Out of the 4GB of physical memory only 70MB were remaining. The batch file was still running so I killed it but now the amount of free physical RAM is staying well below 100MB when normally it would hover around the 2.0GB range. Is there anyway for me to see what exactly is hogging up my memory. Task Manager numbers for the processes do not add up. Please help

Domain Controller Certificates

Hi All, Posting in both SBS and general server as this applies to both. I've a transition-packed SBS 2003 server, and I need to understand the different types of certificates involved in Domain usage. For example, yesterday I setup a linux server that makes LDAPS requests to our SBS server for authentication, all worked fine. Today its failing, and when I examined the LDAPS traffic I can see it believes the certificate has expired. Checking the certificate identified, I find it actually has, on the 7 Aug 08. The certificate in question is based on the Domain Controller (DomainController) template in the SBS CA. Theres a three of those certificat…

Unable to create basic domain trust between two Windows 2003 domains - logon servers not available ? Hi. I am currently trying to create a basic one way non-transitive trust between two Windows 2003 domains. We will be merging the domains of two companies in the future but for the time being need to give one domain access to resources in another. Both domains are standalone within their own forest i.e. domain1.net is the only domain in the domain1.net forest and domain2.net is the same. Both domain1 and domain2 have Windows Server 2003 domain and forest functional levels. So far I have created Stub zones on the DNS servers in each domain i.e. domai…
