!Newbie! Windows 2000/2003 security question
by Guest Kryten- 0 replies

Hi, I look after a range of application that run in both Win2000Server and WK3 Server (SP4+SP1 resp.) Have done succesfully for a a good few years now and thought that I knew my way around them quite well. These applications demand that the machine is not in a larger AD. They need to be standalone or in their own AD domain. Strange thing; when I look at security settings I see that, for example, their maximum password age is 42 days and password complexity is enabled...this shows as both configured and effective settings...yet I've never had to change a password or use a particularly complex password. It's like the "effective setting" is not actually …

Hello All, Two of our 50 offices in the company are moving into one new office space. The two 2003 servers in these two offices are going to be moved into this new office. One of the server uses 192.168.10.0/255 subnet, and the other one uses 192.168.11.0/255 subnet. After moving into the new space, they will all be using 192.168.12.0/255 subnet. These two servers are both DCs, DHCPs, DNS servers in their current office. My questions are: 1). Do I need to disjoin these servers and rejoin them to domain again after moving into the new space? or I can simply move them into the new office and change their IPs, then they will be able to service clien…

Hello everybody, I found something that seems to be strange with the Run dialog in Windows XP or 2003 (and maybe others, but those are the versions I checked). I think you may find it interesting. If someone have an explanation please tell me/the others about it. Here it is: Try this: Go to Start --> Run. In the Run dialog box, type homeWhatever, where instead of "Whatever" you can type whatever you want, but don't use spaces between them. Your default browser will open, with some search result for this string. If such a web site exist, it will probably open. For example: typing homeMicrosoft opens the http://www.homemicrosoft.com/ w…

WS 2003 on USB
by Guest Bob Palank- 1 reply

1. Could we give our students a USB Drive that could hold WS 2003? (size is not an issue!) 2. Could the student use Microsoft Virtual Machine 2007 and then boot from the USB ? 3. Wouldn't this completely emulate working on a Server 2003 machine? TIA Bob

Hello. I am not sure which of the myriad Windows Server groups to post [to], so I hope this is as good as any. Please direct me to more appropriate groups as you see fit. Anyhow, Single Windows 2003 Standard SP2 AD environment running: AD Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 Symantec AV Ninja Spam filter file sharing, et al -on- HP Server 2xXeon 3.0 GHz CPU 2 GB memory single homed NIC Over time, performance drops which is corrected by reboot. No viruses or other malware detected. Average 87 processes. I will await some suggestions to refine my details before going on ad-naseum. Thanks, mIke

I am running W2K3 SP2 (PDC FSMO) with AD, IIS6.0, SMTP, NNSTP, ASP, ASPNET, etc. I am trying to install Exchange Server 2003. I need to create a user that has privileges that are Domain, AD Schema, Enterprise, Forest wide (All-in-One). I logged in as the local Administrator on the W2K3/PDC FSMO. I created a new user (bigdog) and added them to the local admin, domain admin, and enterprise admin groups. Is this sufficient to make this user a Domain, AD Schema, Enterprise, &Forest wide (All-in-One) User so that I can install Exchange Server 2003. So far, this has not worked. What else do I need to do????? Help??? -- NuBee

R2 Version Confusion
by Guest MS Poster- 2 replies

Hello: I have Open License versions of both Server 2003 Standard and Enterprise. I also have my OL key for R2 Enterprise. If I run the R2 installer from a network share (that is, I execute Setup2.exe) to an W2k3 Ent SP1 machine, it installs fine. If I run it against W2k3 Standard SP1 machine, it fails with "Setup cannot continue because the operating system edition is different from the Setup edition." Do I need a different version of R2 for Standard? Or do I just need a different license key? I have Software Assurance. Should this be covered by SA? Thanks.

move or rename \$RECYCLE.BIN
by Guest George Valkov- 1 reply

My workspace folder is S:\. That's 2 clicks away: My Computer, S:\ The less items to distract me in that folder, the better. Anything that can be moved to another folder is a solution to clean my workspace. Any solution to clean my workspace is Greatly Appreciated! Here is the plan: 1. Items that will remain: System Volume Information 2. Items that I would like to move to sub-folder or merge together: $RECYCLE.BIN RECYCLER NOTE: \$RECYCLE.BIN is created by Windows 2008 Server so I'd like to configure it to use "RECYCLER" instead. As a preferred alternative, I'd like to move it to: \folder\$RECYCLE.BIN \RECYCLER is created by Windows 2003 server. I…
