Installing RIS on Windows Sever 2003
by Guest justin2312@gmail.com- 10 replies

I've read a few how-to docs on installing Remote Installation Service (RIS) on Windows Server 2003; they all seem to say go to Add/Remove Programs> Windows Components and select "Remote Installation Service". I looked on my server, however, and the option isn't listed there at all. I'm sure the server is Windows Server 2003 SP1, is there any reason why the feature would be absent?

Mapping of home folders for users
by Guest acoustix- 3 replies

I've been having an issue with home folders being misdirected when a user logs into their desktop. I'm not sure if this is a server config issue or a desktop OS issue. All clients are running WinXP Pro SP2. All domain controllers are Win 2003 SP1. Home folders are cofigured on users profiles in AD. I have selected "connect H: to: \\servername\home\username". The "home" folder group is shared on the server to domain users. The home folders are also hosted on a DC. When a user logs in the H: drive normally points to the correct location. But I'm seeing more and more of the workstations mapping the H: drive to \\server\home and then the user sees…

can't access logon scripts
by Guest H- 1 reply
Hi, I've got a problem whereby our users can't access the logon scripts. If you browse to the netlogon share we are unable to open the scripts, getting the error message:- "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to acceess the item." This happens even when logged on as administrator. Checking the permissions on the files and they are fine. If I browse on the server to c:\windows\sysvol\domain\scripts I can open the scripts up fine. This is causing me problems as no-one is getting their mapped network drives! Can anyone help? -H

Format of the specific domain invalid
by Guest John Glueck- 1 reply

We are adding new XP Pro computers to Windows 2003 Standard, already there are 20 XP Pro computers using domain 'server.local'. The new computers are getting the message "Format of the specific domain invalid" when attempting to join the domain. There are no Winwods 2003 license issues with adding new computers. All the other computers added have no problems. There were 15 old XP Pro computers replaced with newer computers; Ghosts was used to copy the hard drives - they went on uneventfully. We have eOpen license for XP Pro, the first 15 had no problems now we have hit the wall. Thanks.

We control access to the internet though an ISA server (which works fine). To get to the internet users use a proxy (which is the ISA server). But some have figured out that if they install firefox by default it connects them directly to the gateway (bypassing the ISA box). Because of other applications users need to have local admin rights so even if I remove firefox, they can just reinstall. Anyone have any suggestions?
