File Server Resource Manager - Load issue
by Guest dMon- 0 replies

Hi, I have some enquiries, hopefully someone can enlighten me. In Windows 2003 R2, there is the file server resource manager which can manage quota, file screening and generation of reports. I realised that when I generated a report in 123server on a dept shared folder, it took very long. At times it could take more than a day and its not generated. The last test I did for a dept which the size is abt 50GB and its run in the night, it took abt 6 hours to complete. I did the similar test on a another server which size is abt 80GB data, it took me less than 15mins to generate. Is it due to the resource utilization, huge disk space and its usage(123se…

Can't run MMC without pagefile?
by Guest Neufusion- 2 replies

I followed the procedures at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889654/ to determine the appropriate page file size for a Windows Server 2003 x64 server running SQL Server 2005 x64 with 16gb of RAM. The article stated "When lots of memory is added to a computer, a paging file may not be required.". and "If you have enough RAM installed in your computer, you may not require a page file at all, unless one is required by a specific application." I monitoring the paging file and determined it had little to no usage. So I decided to test out the scenario of running with 'no paging file' on a SQL Server 2005 x64 mirror server. I set the virtual memory settings to 'No…

by Guest biff- 5 replies

Hi. I have a file server that users connect to. If I open the computer management tool, I can see who is connected to the server via shared folders->sessions. How can I send a broadcast message to the users that are connected to the server? Say for instance, I need to reboot the server and need to send out a message to those connected or even do a countdown; how can I do that?

SYSVOL not replicating
by Guest Brett Evanson- 5 replies
I have another server I am adding to my domain. Both servers are 2k3 R2 SP2. I get the new one all installed, I install the updates, I add it as a domain controller, which says it completed successfully. I run netdiag and dcdiag, and i have all sorts of errors about not being able to get RCP connections, LDAP connections, and the SYSVOL hasn't replicated. I have spent 9 hours trying to fix all the problems, and they all point back to DNS settings, firewalls (which isn't an issue here, because they are both on the same switch, with no firewalls at all), and some settings. I am wondering if someone has an example of all the SRV records I should have for dns…

Windows service won't start automatically
by Guest Adam Sandler- 3 replies

Hello, I have a service that isn't starting automatically at startup. After booting up and logging on, if one goes into services, the service is set to automatic but it isn't running. If I then start the service, it starts with no other problems. In the event log, I'm getting one 7000 event id which states the service couldn't start because an invalid user account or password was supplied. This error isn't helpful because if a bad account was associated with the service, the service should never start - the service will start if someone manually starts it, it just won't start at boot, despite an automatic startup type specified. Here's some background…

KVM switch for USB and/or PS2
by Guest banjolicious@netscape.net- 3 replies

I recently got a new server which has only USB inputs for keyboard and mouse. My old KVM switch is all PS2 type connections. I need to share keyboard / mouse / video between this new server and an ancient DOS box that runs the phone system. Is there anyway to do it with an all PS2 KVM? If not, can you suggest a 4-port KVM that can handle both types?

Files and Directory Length/Naming Issues
by Guest Shaun EN- 2 replies

As with most companies users love to bury their files and folders a billion levels deep. Now I know Microsoft has said in a MSDN article the maximum path length should be 260 characters (correct me if I'm wrong). Now ive been able to print out the directories using a third party software and see some of our directory's are around 295 characters and that's not including the file name! What I want to find out is what happens when you start going past the maximum length. What kinds of issues will you have? I'm trying to find some technical documents that point out there might be browsing issues or slowness when opening files or something to that effect…

How to compare Environment settings for when I log in vs Task scheduler logs me in.
by Guest Leonid L- 3 replies

[This may sound like a programming question, but it is actually simpler than that.] I have a Windows Server 2003 SP1 configured to run nightly tests of software. That involves: A) Downloading them using tf.exe, B) compiling them using devenv.exe, C) running an executable created during compilation. I've written a small C# App that performs steps 1) 2), and 3) in order. I also created a local non-admin user, and configured the task scheduler to run this App as that user (I supplied a password). The App started in this way fails at step 2) The exact message is: "Error spawning 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe'" Without getting into details of the build proces…

Hard Drive Space
by Guest George Schneider- 3 replies

Stange issue. Since lat the C primary boot partition on my array is down to about 4 mb of free space this is a 16 GB drive. This just strated happening. I can't figure out where the sapce has gone. The only program installed on C other than the typical windows stuff is MSDE also on C. Unfortuantly the person who set this server up installed everything on C instead of the other partition E which has 45 GB free and this issue would not be happening. DO you think MSDE could be eating away the space or causing some form of problem with space. I know they can't grow beyond 2 GB in size which i believe the biggest one is aboutb 200 MB. Just very strange …

by Guest sbs newbie- 0 replies

Sorry for the double post. I also posted in the SBS NG and should have posted here first. I have a DELL Power Edge 4600 server running W2K3 SP1 The server has an integrated dual channel Perc 3Di RAID controller. On one is my OS configured RAID 1 (2 x 18GB) SCSI drives. On the second channel is my Data RAID 5 (6 X 73GB - 1 hot spare) SCSI drives. On my Data array I have 1 single primary partition. The new drive I added is part of the RAID5 set and of course it shows as "Unallocated". I want to extend my primary partition to include this new drive. Can this be done using Partition Magic or can anyone suggest a better tool and procedure of doing this.thanks in …
